When I was a teenager I got The Great Annihilator, and I have to say, it was the absolute worst place to start. I was into noise rock, no wave, industrial, goth, and neofolk, and a number of their contemporaries like Wovenhand, Einstürzende Neubauten, Boredoms, DNA, Sonic Youth, and Mars, so I tried my damnedest to get into it. But it was just so boring and unengaging. It was years until I tried them again and discovered I actually really like their folk stuff.

are you the original creator of this flowchart? because I have some suggestions.
I think it's is beautiful and well done, but do you really think people should start with CV? I think the trance site is pretty bad (with that being said, the other side is amazing).
Also no arrow to CV2, and I think that Shawarma should be heard before Vicious Delicious.
I wanted to make a flowchart for IM for a long time but never could decide with and album to start with.

I don't think one exists, but I can help.

Start with Born in the U.S.A and Born to Run. If you liked the former listen to Tunnel of Love and if you liked the latter, listen to Darkness on the Edge of Town. After all that, if you want more moodiness, give Nebraska a spin and if you want more epic stadium rock, you'll enjoy The River.

The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle has more of an R&B flavor and Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ has a folksy Dylan-esque vibe.

yeah i made it, thanks for the feedback. i agree that CV trance side is fairly weak but i figured the album as a whole was the best starting point in the interest of having the fewest steps before reaching any individual album as possible. maybe starting with Classic Mushroom would be better... CV2 is supposed to be in the same category as VD but i do see how it's a little more ambiguous-looking than other categories that have 2 albums. i'm not sure on where i stand with regards to VD vs LotBS (both have some of their best work IMO), but i felt like Shawarma was a pretty direct extrapolation of some of the ideas they were using in VD so that's how i landed on that ordering. would be happy to hear any other thoughts.

Classic Mushroom is fantastic, probably the best "pure trance" album by IM, so this is definitely a good pick for first psy IM album. It would be really hard to place RttS here, since it doesn't really sound like old psy IM (I think it's great).


I think it's natural that CV2 will have an arrow coming from CV - "more of this" or something.

No further comments, I actually really like your chart.

Really glad they stopped with the dubstep shenanigans after FoM, but I can see why some would like them.

thanks man. i'll remember this conversation when i stop being lazy and update the chart. and agreed about the dubstep trend chasing albums, that was their lowest point IMO (although they do have a few redeeming tracks between them)
