Imagine modern music if this bog never existed.

Blues developed mostly in the Mississippi delta, so it probably wouldn't have mattered one iota.
>>
can't imagine a world without big tymers

>what is jazz?
>>
>>72905186
not sure if gr8 b8 but blues => jazz. no blues = no jazz
>>
>>72905201
>no blues = no jazz
Wut
>>
>>72905186
Jazz has always been and remains a niche, mostly by and for musicians. If by "modern music" we mean to say 99% of commercial music since the 1950's, then can you honestly say it would be all that much different if jazz never existed?

Not to mention jazz is by no means exclusive to Louisiana. New Orleans jazz constitutes a pretty small subset, really.
>>
>>72905225
jazz derived from blues music. Blues=> big band => jazz. there is a lot more steps in there moving from rhythm and blues to big band to bebop etc. get your shit together
>>
>>72905232
fucking idiots in this thread. jazz birthed rock and roll and the whole genre of popular music. as opposed to classical/ folk music. Blues=>jazz=>rock => all the fucking music you listen to today.
>>
>>72905186
garbage
>>
>>72905257
What in the fuck no. Rock is directly from blues holy fuck. It's called the pentatonic scale.
>>
>>72905257
rock and roll came out of a combination of hillbilly music and blues
>>
>>72905244
Wut no jazz came before big band wtf are you talking about
>>
>>72905232
look up the difference between popular music and classical music. then look at the history of popular music. then appreciate black people/america for inventing /mu/core
>>
>>72905232
new orleans is basically the origins of ragtime which mixed with blues to become jazz. jazz as we know it is from new orleans. also jazz is hugely impactful on modern music. funk and by extension disco and house music is derived from jazz fusion. not to mention it's impact on hip hop. also niche genres like prog worship jazz.
>>72905244
>Blues=> big band => jazz
what are you talking about? big band is a subgenre of jazz.
>>
>>72905244
>>72905257
>=>
Speaking of getting your shit together.

-->
>>
>>72905281
no jazz was first incarnated in big band. with singers like bessie smith and shit
>>
>>72905304
big band is literally just Jazz played in a big band
Jazz predates it m8
>>
>>72905295
big band was the first incarnation of jazz but i am sure that people in the thread wouldnt recognize it as jazz. hence the step. and the syncopation, band set up, etc from jazz led directly to rock and roll with chuck berry, sister rosetta thorpe etc. elvis stole that shit and boom, modern music
>>
>>72905319
Wut Elvis didn't innovate shit

>>
>>72905319
What is dixieland?
>>
>>72905319
big band was not the first incarnation of jazz. new orleans jazz was forming at the turn of the century. big band didn't gain traction until 2 or 3 decades later when swing got big.
>>
>>72905340
swing music, no improv, early transition to what jazz would become. nice try
>>
>>72905355
Improv doesn't mean shit. It isn't a genre.
>>
>>72905344
see >>72905337

>Towards the end of the 1920s, a new form of Big Band emerged which was more authentically "jazz," in that more space was given to improvised soloing

See
>>72905366
>>
>>72905377
improv was a defining feature that truly set jazz apart from swing and started the jazz age. fckin pleb

>>
>>72905393
>>72905369
there was improvised parts in ragtime and blues. it carried over to NO jazz
>>
>>72905404
no there wasn't.
>>
>>72905393
No what sets it apart are the fucking notes. You know what separates rock from blues? A note. One single fucking note turns the pentatonic scale into the blues scale.

And improv isn't even a fucking feature what the fuck. Improv simply reflects how the feature was composed.
>>
>>72905419
try again
Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation
>>
No Randy Newman, which would be a shame
>>
>>72905419
also

Although jazz is considered highly difficult to define, at least in part because it contains so many varied subgenres, improvisation is consistently regarded as being one of its key elements.
>>
>>72905437
Ever heard of a jazz chord?

And I was mainly contesting that improv is not a compositional characteristic. Improv is a characteristic of composing. I suppose it's an easy mistake when put like that.
>>
>>72905459
see
>>72905455
>>
>>72905290
By way of blues, not jazz. Jazz has not had a substantial impact on mainstream popular music. It just hasn't.
>>
>>72905417
>no there wasn't.
how can you be this thick? do you think Robert Johnson wrote out everything he played beforehand? also improvisation is found in most folk music. blues being a part of American Folk music.
>>
>>72905492
Not to mention blues is easy as fuck to improvise. Not that I'm implying anything about quality but it is extremely straight forward. Although surprisingly difficult to go fast because of the two note shapes instead of three notes. Lots of hammer one and pull off are required. At least talking about guitar.
>>
>>72905492
Robert johnson was in the 30's, after jazz had formed, feeding off the improv and looser style
>>
>>72905491
without the freer form of jazz, the later jazz ensembles with guitars, bass, and drums, there would be no rock. blues was a big part too but

"One particularly noteworthy example of a jazz song with recognizably rock and roll elements is Big Joe Turner with pianist Pete Johnson's 1939 single Roll 'Em Pete, which is regarded as an important precursor of rock and roll."
>>
>>72905455
also

Rock and roll (often written as rock & roll or rock 'n' roll) is a genre of popular music that originated and evolved in the United States during the late 1940s and early 1950s, from African American musical styles such as gospel, jump blues, jazz, boogie woogie, and rhythm and blues, along with country music
>>
>>72905589
Fug

And I'm showing 38 actually
>>
>>72905616
regardless, the blues and jazz both developed side by side and musicians crossed over between the genres giving us all the great music this sub likes to shit on. its all crazy interesting and glad someone on here was smart enough/passionate enough to go down to the details on this shit
>>
I'm never saying the word rock ever again since there is no such thing. It always has been and always will be

Boogie Woogie
>>
>>72905679
just remember next time you see a black person, thank them for their contribution to the patrician boogie woogie out there.
>>
>>72905225
jesus christ lad get your shit together
