Black Saint is a distinct take on jazz by that time. It's very creative in the means of composition and styles combined. And, frankly, few records have reached that scope of sound and composition. It's just a massive statement in jazz music from start to end. Sorry if you don't like it, but it's amazing. Not even my favorite Mingus, but can't deny its brilliance.

I've been trying to digest Derek Bailey's music for a while now. I have no problem with Brötzmann, Zorn, Soft Machine, Sun Ra, Ornette Coleman, but Derek's playing seems amateurish and unstructured to be taken seriously. And I'm a guitar player. Does he have any "tame" albums?

I don't think there are any Bailey albums that will change the mind of someone that doesn't get it - he's basically always pretty primitive sounding and never gave fucks

Topography of the Lungs, The Music Improvisation Company album on ECM, Derek Bailey & Han Bennink are great - Mirakle and his albums with Ruins are more accessible, but if you don't get it and you've already tried, chances are good you won't

Thank you for you recommendations. It's not that I don't get it. But it sounds chaotic and primitive to the point everyone could do it. Trout Mask Replica may sound like that for some ears, but it's as far removed from that as possible.
