I met Layne once after his concert once at their hotel they were staying at. first thing he says to me is that he feels like his dick was lifting a bus full of fat kids. Shit you not. I still don't know what the fuck that means but I laughed my ass off. We got to talking and he said he hadn't been feeling well I could tell something was bothering him.
>>
anybody got the copypasta about the dudes uncle picking him up from school when layne died?
>>
Layne and forgotten don't even fit in a sentence together. I got to see Alice once and I was front row. Layne saw me with my girlfriend and said "wear protection you'll need it" best night of my life. Lol
>>
Layne was a fucking great guy. No one will tell you otherwise he loved all. I was at a Metallica concert once and they started shit talking Layne. I left as soon as that happened. Of course back then it was only rumors he was on drugs bad. We didn't know how bad.

>Me and my friend Paul were making fun of the spanish kids with velcro shoes in 7th grade shop class and next thing I know the loudspeaker goes off and has the guidance counselor on ittelling me to report to the office, I go in and my uncle Darrell who I havent seen since I was a toddler was standing there with this look of emptiness and shit. “Get in the car dude,” he said and I am thinking the worst has happened. Well I ask what was wrong and he just looked at me and said, “Layne OD’d,” and I asked him who the fuck that was. He took out a cassette and popped it in the tape deck, cranked the volume up, and passed me a joint even though he knew I never smoked before. We took off and Alice in Chains – The Rooster played all the way thru, we were both stoned silent the whole time and my mind was completely blown. “That singer is dead now man,” and from there on out I have just had this insane outlook on life.

Thank you
>>
>>72867997
There's video of this shit on YouTube you know. I bet James feels like shit about that everyday
>>
I was fortunate enough to meet Layne at a nightclub once. He walks up to me and asks who my sister is dating. I told him his name and asked why he was interested. He pointed down at his bare feetand said "cause that's the asshole who stole my shoes" I didn't know what to think
>>
>>72868029
>>72867997

It was a shitty thing to do, but imagine the predicament Metallica was in, the frustration of trying to find a new opening act at the last fucking minute. It doesn't help were all full blown alcoholics. James especially, and the easiest way to deflect your own problems is to shine the light on someone else as a distraction

They were cool with each other by the aic unplugged performances though.

Apparently he was big into vidya in his last years alive. someone on here mentioned he was a fan of MGS.
No idea about the validity of that though
>>
Jesus Christ how many people met this motherfucker
>>
>>72867910
He was the rarest of talents.

I was in the Florida on holidays when I was a kid. We were queuing to get into some restaurant on international drive.

A bunch of guys with long hair breezed in through the queue. My mam started loudly saying "who the fuck are they".

Mfw when Layne turned around and I nearly died. I said to him I was sorry for her outburst and he smiled.

I wandered over to him later when i went to get a soda refill. Got talking for a few minutes, he bust a nut when I said he was amazing but I could take or leave the rest of AIC as a band. Got a signed napkin off him and that was that.

Super down to earth guy, amazingly talented. Its the one death I've never really gotten over.
>>
>>72868082
A lot of people. He was a very social guy. He always met fans when he could and enjoys talking to people.
>>
>>72868071
My brother Lynn was one of Laynes friends in his later life. He worked at a coffee shop Layne would go to. My bro can confirm on this. Dude loved MGS and Gek apparently.
>>
He made a forthright comment before he died , it seemed like he was aware he was stuck with his addiction. It was a very sad death
>>
>>72868149
He was. His dad is a genuine piece of shit. He got Layne hooked on that shit and then he got off.. Layne didn't.
>>
To be honest I'm glad Nirvana was bigger than Alice that was we can enjoy them more. Would be annoying seeing these 14 year old girls running around singing Man in the Box like they do with Smells Like Teen Spirit. Layne was possibly the best vocalist of the 20th century. His technique, his range (incredible), and his very strong belt. He was a great singer.

I saw Layne Staley at a grocery store in Seattle on January 2001. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.

He said, “O--oh, ummm uhh l-like you’re doing n-now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? shit... huh? huh?” and closing his gloved and rotten smelling hand in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle and mumble as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to shuffle out the doors with like fifteen bottles of cough syrup in his shaking hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and unsteadily brought them to the counter, mumbling something about needing to poop.

She took one of the bottles and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “t-to prevent a-any electrical interfettence,” and then turned around and winked at me, his rotten
and loose teeth in a grin. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly. He dozed off multiple occasions. He's wake up startled and mumble 'fuck'.

When he came to, the price was something like 100 bucks. He tried to pay with black tar heroin residue in his pockets but the cashier obviously didn't accept it. He took off his show and removed a wad of fives and slapped the how thing down on the counter and waited for the cashier to pick through the wet looking bills.

When the money was counted, he collected the wad of bills and walked out of the store with his cough syrup. He left his shoe behind.

Really eye opening stuff.

I met him the same year with some friend of his at a baseball park. He was so strange and constantly mumbling. His friend told me Layne was on crack and wanted to make sure he was alright. He looked horrible. Surprisingly didn't smell bad, but you could tell he was fucked in the head.

Jerry wrote the music for sure. The guy needed Layne though. Layne wrote great eery lyrics that really brought a song to life. Jerry's voice is good but isn't strong enough imho to sing lead by himself on those tracks. I couldn't be a bigger dick sucker of Jerry though.

Turning the steering wheel hard to the right and stomping his foot on the gas, Alice in Chains' lead singer, Layne Staley, accelerates full speed into the back of a stopped car. Grinning widely, he slams his open-top vehicle into reverse and glances over his shoulder just in time to see a Wiffle ball descend in an arc toward him. Staley shifts his bony hips, reaches his left arm out and catches the sphere in a scoop that resembles a cross between a squash racket and a jai alai cesta. Then he floors his car back to center court, where he passes the ball to Alice's guitarist, Jerry Cantrell, who is waiting under a small goal. Cantrell flings the object from his scoop and into the goal. A buzzer sounds, and a red light illuminates. Two points for the Alice in Chains team.

his mom is fucking weird

like she capitalized on his death with books and lots of media shit

And they said, “Oh I wouldn’t do that.” And I said, “I can do this.” I’ve always promised myself that if anything happened to my children I would be there for them. And I went in, and he was tiny and I thought at first that he had made like a life-sized mannequin of himself because he had lots and lots of art projects always. And I thought, you know, somebody could have thrown that little guy over their shoulder and walked down the street and nobody would have even know that it was a real person...so, and I sat with him for a few minutes. And I told him that I was really sorry how things had turned out...." [53]

whoops!
>>
There's a really depressing article about his final days. Easily found through google.
>>
"Since our music is so depressing, everybody expects us to run around in black and whine about shit," says Kinney. "But that's such a misconception. We just get together and fuck around. We're like the Monkees or something."
>>
>>72868400
Nigha jerry wrote nearly all the lyrics too
>>
Wasn't he dead in his apartment for about 2 weeks before they found him?
Sad.
>>
>>72868454
No he's right it's pretty well known Layne was the lyricist of the band. Jerry was the writer of the music.
>>
>>72868208
On a copypasta related note, has anyone got that one about Thom Yorke and the sex machine in his hotel room?
>>
>>72868400
Staley wrote 3/12 lyrics on facelift and half of them on dirt. His voice was integral to the aic sound but jerry was definitely the brain
>>
>>72868434
I don't think he liked his parents very much.
>>
>>72868469
Not really, jerry wrote nearly all of dirt and at least half of the lyrics of their later stuff
>>
>>72868071
>Apparently he was big into vidya in his last years alive.
confirmed

"After dinner, Cantrell, Kinney and Inez return with Staley to his house, where they stay up until 5 in the morning, smoking pot and playing video games. "
>>
>>72868494
Jerry wasn't the lyricist. Most of their later stuff was Layne. Sap and facelift are the exception. Layne wrote the lyrics on nearly all of tripod jof and dirt.
>>

Most amazing thing about AIC was harmony between Cantrell and Staley's voices. It was some magic sort of music.

This is why i can't into Duvall. He's not bad and has voice, but there's no such harmony anymore and i can't feel this magic.

Their new stuff is not that bad though, Check my brain is cool and your decision too

Chris was a fucking GOAT.

Stone Sour, RHCP, Megadeth already paid tribute and covered Soundgarden songs on their shows.

I feel warm as huge grunge fan that Chris got such reputation and acknowledgement

Met Layne once in 90 and he gave me his phone number because I hit on him. I'd call him every now and then to see how he was he was always wanting to talk. He had a gf named Demri I think and he loved her. He talked to me about her once and said he was going to marry her. I called him the day after she died to tell him how sorry I was for his loss he answered said "I gotta go.." and hung up. I didn't talk to him again until 2000 when I saw him at a gas station. I barely recognized him. He came behind me covered my eyes and said "guess who behind you, you must" I was worried about him. I still haven't gotten over his death. He was a sweet man.

Layne was a publicly, and famous heroin addict, how the fuck don't you know the extent of his disease, he was barely 100 pounds desu.

and why the fuck do you need to leave if you took xanax? it's probably safer to stay in Laynes apartment, black out for a few days and than maybe in your autopilot state, he may have called EMS and saved Laynes life.

Grunge was the last time rock had good vocals and Personalities. Everything since then has been lacking in some way. Its Sad how these dudes went out..

Probably the same reason why Lying Season didn't end up on Dirt.

Only some bands, like Limp Bizkit. Still, a few years back articles regarding the disaster that was the grunge fashion were pretty common. Maybe NuMetal needs a couple of years for people to treat it like nostalgia worthy or reach cult status.

that was just a jam i'm pretty sure. iirc jerry says it was just something they were fooling around with at soundcheck.

>>72868531
for me: unplugged version of brother fucks me up. my cousin and i love AiC and when he got deployed as a marine I played that on my ride home that night. cried hard as fuck once it was only jerry and layne singing.
honorable mentions are rooster, nutshell, frogs, and over now

I don't think nu metal will ever reach cult status, people get nostalgic over it i know i do. But I don't think nu metal quite captured the zeitgeist like grunge did. It was a big deal but it wasn't a game changer like Grunge. Idk if rock will ever reach those hights again..
>>
>>72870615
I was talking about nu metal dummy. Grunge will always be cool but nu metal seems cringe at this point.
>>
>>72867910
he let >tfwngf get to him
literally
>>
>>72870635
Well, it will probably never be as well respected as grunge because it never was as big. I mean, Nirvana's still regarded as one of the best bands ever by "big" publications. But I don't think the normal consensus on nu metal is cringey; maybe here, but people still complain about Linkin Park not going back to the genre.

nu metal will not age well
>>
Deftones is good, not sure about other nu metal. But i like Deftones.

I'd have sex listening to Chino Moreno's voice
>>
>>72870728
Nothing wrong in being part of an era's sound. See: Duran Duran.
>>
>>72870711

Well Cobain was a above average song writer and did really well vocal melodies

He was probably a bland guitarist though. But most of us are bland guitarists anyways

Nirvana was really good at pop songs which sounds kinda funny
>>
>>72870711
People i know who were into nu metal cringe at it like how i cringe at my emo/scene phase. Part of growing up I guess. I just can't see people looking back at Korn, SOAD and slipknot and going on about how cool it was. Like how people go on about 70s punk or the late 80s rave scene. They'll probably lool back at it like people look back at Smash mouth and hair metal.

Deftones were cool though
>>
>>72868531
nutshell or rotten apple
>>
>>72870747
Hey, buddy fuck you
Duran Duran live will make you want to bang anything is so hot

Memes aside, those posh brits give a helluva show.
>>
>>72870844
Mostly because people who invest themselves that much into a scene, quickly jump into another as soon as it "dies out", at least when they were young.

I had some friends that were into nu metal, then they were into metalcore, then went full hipster. I think those kind of people tend to cringe at everything they used to like. But I think normal people still hear Chop Suey! and most likely sing along.

>>72870913
Wasn't implying anything bad about them, Rio is one of my favorite albums of all time.

Because STDs or was he saying never have a kid with this bitch?
>>
>>72870932
>Rio is one of my favorite albums of all time.
Duran Duran are legitimately one of the most underrated musicians I've ever heard. Yes their songs are poppy and they got huge recognition for it, but as musicians? Fuck man they're technically leaps and bounds above the shit they play. It's odd
>>
>>72870932
I remember that shit. Like 7 or 8 years ago suddenly all the sceneies became hipsters. Happened over night. Tbh i never really liked nu metal too much, i liked slipknot briefly but then got into death metal. I mean it was lame but atleast back then kids had something. Like wtf do teenagers today have? Lil uzi vert? Is that it..
>>
>>72871012
My Mum likes Duran Duran. The good old days, when Thatcher was in charge.
>>
>>72871012
I firmly believe they put so much thought into every note they lay down that it shows in the effect the music has on people
Even the dudliest of duds feels compelled to move at least a little when it plays.
>>
>>72871012
Saw a video on John Taylor's rig. The guy basically said he mainly plays with a cheap Peavey bass despite having a Music Man and a Factor bass at his disposition. He also says that he doesn't like to change the strings.

Really humble guy, easily one of my favorite bass players.

Dirt [Columbia, 1992]

Crunch, crunch, crunch, riff, riff, riff. Way harder, louder, and more metallic than Soundgarden will ever be. The price of all this power is that it's also stupider--the sound of hopeless craving. This is a junkie album, take it or leave it--"Junkhead" isn't ironic and probably isn't fictional either. As I sit here looking at my books and degrees (well, degree), I somehow doubt I'd be doing as, er, "well" as resident sickman Layne Staley if I "opened my mind" as he suggests. I'll wait for my own man, thank you very much. B-

Jar of Flies [Columbia, 1994] :(

Stupid kike new yorkers total garbage
>>
>>72868063
Were they my dude? Because I strongly remember the bassist having "Friends don't let friends get Friend's haircuts" written on his acoustic bass on the A.I.C. unplugged and that was a reference to Metallica and their new gay hairstyles and image and subdued music when the "Until it Sleeps" video from Load came out.
>>
great job remembering Chris Cornell everyone

I love how every instrument is so pronounced in that song.

Probably the best AIC song and one of my favorites

I think Metallica were at the Unplugged crowd. Far as I remember, they were good friends.

lmao with all his books and degree(s) he'll never influence anyone as much as based layne and AiC.

Sheltered silver spoon kike shithead blind to anyone's viewpoint but his own

no teenage girls with big piccies of the <objectively><?> better looking Layne on their wall. I can't understand the cult of Kurtis Quiet-Loud though, so maybe just me.

>>

Yeah they were. They're still good friends with Cantrell. He was part of the acoustic radio show they did in the 90s where they recorded Tuesday's Gone for what became Garage Inc

I can get behind that, new strings sound too bright for me
>>
>>72871162
IIRC of the big grunge bands, the only one he really liked was Nirvana.
>>
>>72871147
Layne tearing it up at the end of the version on unplugged. I could listen to that on a loop all day.

"Am I wrong?
Have I run too far to get home?
Have I gone?
And left you all alone?"

Fuck man. That still gives me shivers.

the performance of man in the box from their last show is incredible. you can see jerry giving a thumbs up to layne to encourage him nailing those high notes in the chorus and i get chills every time bro https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Zx-oVwhdLc
>>
>Was he a good guy?

Literally the greatest vocalist of his generation, considering rock music atleast.
>>
A lot of people don't know this, but Layne had a bit of a nasty white nationalist/nazi streak. The "Alice" the band name refers to has a double-meaning. It's not just a quirky Lewis Carroll reference, but also the name of a black acquaintance he had. Pretty dark when you think about it.

Now, on it's own you could shrug that off as a harmless joke, but if you do some more research things start to add up. I can't be too specific, but a friend of a friend knew these guys, and it was common for them to play drinking games based on how many times Layne would say the word "nigger" while drunk, and it usually escalated from there.

Remember that supergroup Class of 99? Probably not. They recorded one Pink Floyd cover and broke up. Some say Layne and Tom Morello didn't get along. I can only speculate as to why.

Eventually karma came back around for Layne. He died strung out on herion, a shell of a man, and AiC was happy to replace him with the first black singer they found. And the Class of 99 project found new life in the form of Audioslave. Sad, but it's not uncommon for things to end like this for racists.
>>
>>72875063
fuck off nigger
>>
>>72875063
Layne hated nazi ideologies though?
>>
>>72875398
You must be the forgetting the time a neo nazi called him a "nigger lover" and he was so offended he beat the shit out of him on stage https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P91fz-cNgU8

I had the pleasure of meeting Layne at a charity do once. He was surprisingly down to earth, and VERY funny

I'm trying to listen to Dirt right now but I keep getting stuck on Some Bones. Like, playing it over and over again. I love how it just hits you out of the gate, its only 2:30, no bullshit. The odd time signature for the verses, that catchy chorus. What a perfectly written pop metal song.

I don't remember exactly where I read it, but it was a sight were people were sharing stories about him.

One girl, who was a friend of his in his later years, talked about how Layne became obsessed with anime, particularly one called "Vampire Princess Miyu."

His last days were spent doing art, watching anime, and playing vidya. Oh, and drugs, I guess. But yeah.

He probably would'a posted on here if he'd lived til' 04
