>on the mixing of this track?
mixing was perfect for me, maybe you could remaster the master with a fully squashed compression and mix it like at -12, -18 db to pump up the force of the sounds, and the background chord-stabs? that sound at 2:06(i know they sound before too, but thats the point i can single them out) maybe need to be upper in volume

but i have some other feedback, more creative-wise, if you wish just drop it, its just my taste:

i think you should start with the dry drums 8-16 bars and then give it a 1/16-1/32 silence and then you go up like 20 notches. harden the kick with some layering, put in an extra track with a compressed kick and mix it with it , harden the snare, layer it a bit, some sub to give it body and some gated noise to make it cut through the mix like a fucking knife

listen to this shit, this is what your track made me think of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=284b1YZ4zXE, listen how it begins with a simple beat, the pitched hihats on the front, somewhat laid back groove, and then it slowly starts growing and growing sonically and before you know it its pushing you up the walls, hear how the "breakdowns" every, 16? make the beat accelerate in groove and at the end it seems like the beat is way forward from the bass and synth, like its "trying to escape them", its like the whole groove evolves and picks you up your ass with a hook and propels you into the air

in my oppinion, you almost got it, you just need to drive it up in intensity

also i think that you need to fill the spectrum full time, like i think it would benefit of a good encompassing saw pad to fill up the gaps

Asked in another thread but ended up getting drunk and forgetting to check for an answer

How would I go about muffling a kick/bassline for a dub techno song? Similar to Gas's sound. When I play with filters it usually just ends up sounding muddy. What are the frequencies that make it still sound clear, but like it's coming from the next room?

I released an album I made myself that I now think is absolutely awful and RYM seems to think so as well. I can't believe I deluded myself but there was pressure to get things started. u seem to know what you are doing, sounds good m8, i would not go to full silence at 0:17, would leave a tail hanging by, the switch is too extreme

i liked the weird sounds a lot!!!

at 0:40 wouldn't make it dissapear so harshly, again, tails

at the 0:55 switch you got it right, thats how you should do the two before that , imo, but ride at 1:05, again, tail!!!! same at 1:25, the ride just dies too soon

i think the intro is too long

i like the shit at 2:20, but for fucks sake man put some killing drums there, i feel like someone is edging me, like they are jacking me off im just about to burst and then they take their hand out

maybe you like that kind of shit but no man, music can go two, three orgasms and keep jacking you off and it never hurts, don't save up for the end

3:55 great break but maybe you should anticipate it more, maybe some reversed crash?

after that there's some choir sounds, again, TAIL!!!!!!!

i think thats the main thing with your track, i would tail it up and dont play with my ear-dick so much, gimme what you want, you are supposed to be my little whore, babylon's goddess whore, not a worthless tease

overall doe, great shit man keep working on it its gonna make a great track, i liked the ambience, texture, and overall the whole track, i just felt like what i said, you were leaving me edging for ever, i know electronic music is supposed to surprise you and throw you off, but the point is 2 or 3 teases and then you go full in and make me want to sever my dick and offer it to you as a gift for the gods

I have been using sytrus for couple months now and i'm wondering how far i can train myself on it. Is there any long term frequency/ring modulation user and what kind of your progress is on intuition and knowledge how to use it? Isn't there endless options what sounds you can make on it and can you ever learn to make exactly those sound you want from pure experience?

http://www.maximumfun.org/shows/song-exploder

This worth downloading?

>>72865820
Yeah you can learn how to make exactly what you want once you learn what the different ratios sound like combined so you can decide oh I need to add an operator at half ratio and then on top of that one four or five times higher with an evelope and what have you. Plus Sytrus will do normal subtractive and additive synthesis if the sound you want isn't purely FM or RM and with each operator having its own output you can stack some complex sounds like a the classic bell and string or a guitar that plays a palm mute on release.
>>
>>72865837
Ohh lol okay ;)
>>
>>72865820
Ive only used sytrus for a while, but there's a limit...but if you want to drive it forward do this: on a piece of paper write down every paramater you think would make a change if you could instantly and expressively change with your hands; once you know what you need, buy a bunch of cheap midi controlers and map the shit out of them: now you've got a fully hands-on sytrus, pair it up with any chain of fx you can think of, and you will be occupied for a looong while

I know, money and shit, another cheaper, but in a way more time-expensive solution, would be either to buy electronics and make your own custome midi controller, or to find the documentation for the internals of your DAW and writing a controller-script for it and finding a way to use less controllers for controlling it all

But if you truly think it sounds great, why not? Can't you contact someone who knows how to do it? Do you have an uni nearby?

I think the market for customized midi shit is vacant as fuck, specially now that there's all these cheap $5 computers
>>
>>72865813

Its just a book, if you don't trust my link google "underground dreyfus .pdf", it isn't even the worst ive got, if you wanna go FULL brainfuck go for "cyberia .pdf", it speaks about the first Anon ever.

Underground is about late 80s hacker scene and it touches on the BBS scene, it even includes Assange. If it doesn't raise your eyebrow youve not been here long enough, the scene they talk about in there, the memes it mentions... its clearly the same community...and the things they mention about its structure...its eye opening in the fullest

If you want another redpill google for the precursor of 2ch, and specially WHO made it and what career the guy was majoring in, it will raise up a brow once you finally connect the "Anonymous" (wink wink) dots.

If you want a BIGGER redpill, look for Moot's post on Something Aweful around 2006/7 when he resurrected 4chan, look what other website he mentions ;)

Another HUGER redpill, look at animecon Moot in 2005 and Anonymity-talk Moot around 2010?. Thats a huge one....

Or if you've been perceptive enough to the looping shitposting and to the spam that appears on the top-bumped threads on every board just before the website freezes, then maybe you already get it

Or just google "tannasin", but the elitist superstruture is way more esoteric than the books i mentioned

I dunno man, we are all trapped on this TRAIN, am i right?

Hmmm, I'm wondering if it is worth downloading 33 gigs of Trilian bass. I have Omnisphere 2, but it doesn't seem to have any good bass guitars and I need some of those badly. Anyone used Trilian before?
>>
>>72867982
What style of music are you making?
>>
>>72868236
I experiment with everything, but currently I need something that resembles the actual bass guitar which can fit well with jazz, pop, rock etc. styles. Something that doesn't sound too much like a digital synth. From the demos I've heard this could be a good fit.

Anyway, I'm already downloading it, fuck it. I have to at least try it.

What's the most cost effective way of getting 2-3 midi synths hooked up to a computer? Currently I only have a decade old Midisport UNO but it seems like the MOTU Micro Lite USB MIDI is the next step along with some cables as it's got 5 ins and outs. I have a recording interface to record them but not send notes to.

I primarily use Ableton on Windows and Mac but don't know much about this side of the hardware.

>Check out the video on Taylor Swift's melody writing
>One-note melodies in every pop song
How come when electronic genres play the same note over and over it's boring but when someone sings the same note over and over it's a hit? Are people just too dumb for house music?
>>
>>72869855
Harmonic structure and predictability with small but calculated "exotic" variety added like microtonality, polytonality, or polyrhythms is more important to a pop song than complicated melody.

A big sample library with multiple recordings of each drum hit and articulations. EZ Drummer, Addictive Drums, just about anything that comes up for Kontakt, listen to demos.

Program it a little off the grid, add articulations like ghost hits and quick bounces on the snare and only playing what's possible with your feet and two sticks, vary the velocity, accentuate the groove, put the drums a little ahead of everything else since people get their cues from the drummer.
>>
>>72871096

When I installed Trilian, it created another STEAM folder. After that, Omnisphere could not find its own folder anymore, and if I linked it manually it listed a bunch of errors and my library was empty. Then Trilian got fucked too, so I just deleted it and Omnisphere is fine now.

I probably should have installed it differently and made just one STEAM folder or whatever, but nvm. I'll try something else. I have to remember this though, because I might try Keyscape one day, and it is also from Spectrasonics.

I prefer chopping sampled drum beats from records instead of sample libraries or ezdrummer stuff. After you lay down the drum beat you want, move the sample start times to just before the drum hit so you have the air between hits and then move the midi notes for the drums back accordingly and it will sound more natural.

I'm mixing a hip hop track for someone and I've got a question: Are adlib tracks often panned to the left or right? I don't listen to much hip hop so I'm not sure. Sonically the track I'm working on sounds better with the adlibs panned out of the way of the vocals in the center, but the adlibs are pretty much consistently going throughout the song so I feel like it might be weird if they're constantly panned to the side for the whole song.

to be clear I'm not asking if they should be panned to the left or to the right, but rather should they be panned to anything other than the center

>Sonically the track I'm working on sounds better with the adlibs panned out of the way of the vocals in the center
>panning for clarity

this is WRONG and BAD MIXING

"mix in mono" is common (misunderstood) advice is not just to check for phasing. if you're panning to make room for things there's something wrong with your arrangement or how you recorded it. the adlibs should sound good in mono already, fix it with reverb or eq or rerecord it

thoughts on the mixing? It's only a selection of the full track. I've only been making music for a month and I feel like I'm not very good. also do you feel that the whistle sound fits.

Needs some additional FX and potentially a melody for part of the track but the core parts are all pretty much there. Still trying to decide what to do with the next phrase of the 4 phrase drop.

Oh, and it's a hard drum & bass track.

I just said it sounds better that way, which I think it does. Just thought it sounded weird being panned for extended periods of time though, and was wondering if it was common practice in rap mixes.
>>
>>72874009
The "boom" comes from the sub bass part of the kick trailing behind the transient. You can cut out the higher frequencies and get something that's still boomy but mostly sits in the sub bass layer.
>>
>>72874009
>>72878924
Reverb can help to add some more delay and enhance the boom. It's all about delay.

I have a Roland JX-3P, which I love. I got it for a little under $500. But I would recommend looking into the Roland boutique series. They are all under $500 iirc. The JX-03 and JX-3P sound almost identical to me, plus you have a few more waveforms and a larger range to play around with in the oscillators with the JX-03

Yo guys, i sampled a song and I got a decent melody going, but I got some gaps in it so it fits with the drum patter(that i will add eventually). You guys have some advice or "tricks" to fill in the gaps and not make it sound like shit?

The instrumental so far, ignore the latter half:
https://clyp.it/5ymxpm2o
>>
>>72878800
It sounds kind of cloudy, bring out the upper frequencies a little, especially with the vocal and drums.
>>72878850
It still sounds a little static for such an intense track, which I guess would be partially fixed by adding that fx and melody. Maybe on the next phrase you could play around with beat looping and glitching.
>>72879861
Maybe the vocals should further forward in the mix so we can actually hear what they're saying, unless that was your goal. Other than that the production is nice, I enjoyed it.
>>72878679
>>72880355
The whistle goes well with it, I think it would work better if the chords were quieter so we can hear the more percussive melodies break through the mix. Maybe even try sidechaining between different elements.

This is the first half of a track I'm nearly finished with.

Not a big fan of the droney synth and the kick sounds too loud and the pattern seems kinda random and pointless.

In the second half that kick also seems way too loud.

I like the dark mad scientist vibes.

>>72878850

(Sounds like it could be fucking rad)

>>72879861
Make vocals louder? But if you're going for that shoegazey feel then idk, still make vocals a little bit louder and add some effect like reverb or something.

>>72880848
Honestly don't know, just add the drums and see what it sounds like then

>>72881181
Piano stands out too much, the drop is fire though, oh my fucking god .Id change the kick as well, the "bzzt" on it sounds meh, maybe don't distort it or choose a kick with lower bass?

So I guess this is my first beat ever.

I've made tracks before, but this actually I'm semi-happy with.
Please give feedback, I'm planning on doing this shit "professionally" in the future.
Also should I drop the bell in the second half?
>>
>>72881694
beats kind of generic and not typically the kind of trap beat I go for, but that being said it's pretty dope for your first ever beat.

I think the bell is good, barely noticeable desu but adds some depth

I get happy vibes from the 808 (think lil yachty or shawn wasabi), but the pad/whatever it is has almost a melancholic, lonely feeling. Not bad lonely, but careless, mythical lonely. I'd explore more on one of those themes, but If you can make them work together it would make a cool "I'm happy but kinda sad too" track.
Don't know if it makes sense, I don't know music theory and shit so I rely on my feels.

Yes, I was thinking a hardcore techno kind of thing which would distort the fuck out of the kick. Tried earlier and couldn't get anything satisfying but I'll try it again.

>>72881694
You're definitely right that the snares are loud. It's the combination of the distortion with the simultaneous bass hit. I could probably compress the bass which would also make some headroom for FX.
>>
>>72885445
You could also try to overlay the kick with a static/semi static dubstep type of bass. See the track Excision - Live Wire at exactly 3 minutes in to have a general idea.
>>
>>72864636
I've just started my euro rack journey. Hopefully have a setup like OP's pic related in a few months
>>
>>72885477
I'm not sure about adding another bass layer. I want to tweak what I have. There may be a piece of my reese bass sample I overlooked that would work well as the tail for the kick (kind of frenchcore style). I think the greatest difficulty is the transition between the crossbreed style and the hardcore style. I could introduce the hardcore kick effect in the crossbreed section...
>>
I want to learn producing (Ableton) and DJing (Traktor), so what would be better choice - AKAI APC Mini or Launchpad Mini?
>>
>>72885522
Fine, I actually got the idea of making a thing like the suggestion i gave you, might try it out when i have time
>>
>>72885663
The real key that let me do this was to synchronize bass "hits" (chopped samples usually) with kicks and snares (except ghost hits)
it worked perfectly - picked it up mostly from donny, cooh, and audio
>>
I'm going to collaborate with my buddy who makes breakcore. He'll program the drums and I will make some chopped bass samples to accompany them with some FX.

>>
>>72888095
>Pretty unconventional start
I just fancied building a few DIY modules until I decide what modules I want to Build a system from. So I decided to get a few random cheap modules. I have been playing with conventional synths for a while now so I don't really want to go down the patchable conventional synth route with modular, although I may well get some FM voices as thats something I've never really got into. Akemie's Castle looks like good fun.

> Are you planning on making a noise rig or do you have other CV gear?

No other CV gear and don't really plan on making a noise Rig. I think I'm probably going to DIY a 3u rack with Effects modules as my starting point. The Noise Swash makes an incredible Distortion unit if you feed it audio

I can't give you any feedback on the mix seeing as how cinematic music like this is so different... beautiful piece though man

>>72870864
wow I really dug this... something about it gave me an Akira vibe... or like an urgent cyberpunk chase, yet it still holds a primal feel... I didn't really care for he silent part starting at 1:20 however, though with a visual counterpart it could make sense. I was expecting some intensity in the middle, I got a bit bored there.

>>72873466
not found

>>72874634
i'd say the buildup is way too bright and already sounds pretty full- it takes away from the drop.

Also navi is too upfront near the end

>>72883720
chill. the song is a little dull sounding for me. Reminds me of Thievery Corporation for some reason. This could definitely shine with better mixing

>>72890680
those synths sound really honky honestly. they need some aggresive cuts. the kick clashes really hard also; they could use more click after 0:55

>>72894121
that noise drowns everything out man. too much reverb. I can barely hear what's going on. a more audible, deep rough synth with some dramatic (almost cinematic) drums would be cool

the first half, in context of a full mix, could probably do with less highs actually

"honky" referring to the low mids. they would just sound better being scooped around there. it's usually between 300-600 hz

>>72897627
guitars line is buried in there. guitar swells could be a pinch more audible, and i'd have them aimed lower than filling out the highs. i think it could all be solved making the drums a bit quieter or shelving down the highs.

fuck dude i can hear how the end should be played.... i can hear just a variation of that riff but ending on g... or something like what happens in the outro to under the bridge where he borrows A major to finish the song. idk what all is going on there though

>>72898131
>All the synthesis was made from scratch, no presets

okay??? is it normal to only be using presets? I think you could use a lower note in that chord voicing or another osc an octave lower. The kick sounds canned compared to the rest. Everything before 1:33 was pretty boring honestly
