About 10 years in, I had already been playing a Strat-style guitar for around that long anyway and had always kept going back to it even after owning a Les Paul for a couple years. Playing a Jazzmaster really convinced me that a Strat was much more suited to my needs as a player.

Yank the frets and feel the voids with a hardening filler. If you're feeling exotic and have rosewood dye the wood filler a light color and fill the grain of fretboard. Sand smooth.

why the fuck is shredding so popular? to show off your technique sure, but it sounds like shite most of the time.

>>
>>72875716
Jeez.. no compressor is worth that much imo.
>>
>>72875787
Famalam, I had never even used a compressor before this, in at the deep end lad. I have two weeks to send it back, so I'm gonna try my best to see what the fucking hype is. I watched a video where they said compression is better with singe coils and makes less of a difference with humbuckers, but I'm using P90s, I know they're single coil but it's different, and I don't just know. It definitely makes a difference, I just don't know if I like it.

Just put on some Silk & Steel strings my acoustic rather than the standard bronze because i heard they emulate the sound of nylon guitar music and oh god did I find exactly the tone I was looking for for years just by trying out these strings
They dont sound like nylon at all but they are slinky, mellow and because of how low tension they are playing vibrato on them is nice

I always hated how tuning up bronze strings makes me feel like theyre going to snap any moment too, these tune up so loosely that I can tell they'll never break from tuning

I'm officially #TeamSilk&Steel

Starting to do some excercises, working on learning chord shapes and voicings. Already got an alright understanding of music theory but the fretboard has made things click a little more in my head, so I am digging that.

Nah, playing a D major instead of a Dsus4 works almost as well. If you're comping with a jazz combo just let the guy on piano handle all the weird voicings and extensions while you get to be a lazy shit.

I can never understand some guitarists out there and their obsessions with crazy high gain distortion and dropped tuning. Something about this "obsession with tone" has gotten really out of hand, despite most of the 'tone' being a lot of fucking white noise.
>>

the guys that go crazy with distortion aren't really the ones going crazy over tone, the tone guys are usually the vintagefags who spend thousands of dollars on ridiculous bullshit

it really comes down to what style of music you're playing

but come on, it's piano voicings, it's not going to be easy. every instrument has a different voicing and plays a part in a band. leaning music theory will be better for you than learning piano voicings that you'll rarely if at all use.

that's why i don't like people that play different instruments, because they don't apply the necessary technique and voicing to each instrument

quick

/r/ a good backing track of similar style

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yw74sDWPH7U
>>
>>72881728
I think there's a place for being able to play chords with altered 9ths, 11ths, 13ths, etc., but imo it's better to first and foremost be able to solo over them in a way which brings out those tones over the chords themselves. Like, if I'm comping over a standard and I see a maj7#11 chord, I'll probably just play the maj7 when playing rhythm and use the #11 as a color tone when soloing.
>>
>>72882232
i can't stand vai but that song is extremely impressive

shame he never wrote anything half as good as that
>>
How do I escape the pit of soulless random scale noodling?
>>
>>72882478
Make melodies in your head and connect them to the guitar. Hum, whistle, or sing some shit and then learn to play it. Keep doing it until you can do it simultaneously. Then you'll be playing from your head and not your fingers
>>
what differs a guitar instrumental like vai's and satriani's stuff from good soloing over a youtube backing track
>>
>>72882712
Well, I would also make a distinction between Vai and Satriani's playing too but most of their playing is very rhythm-oriented in addition to the melodic shred stuff. Check out Vai's "Attitude Song" or "Building the Church" or "Now We Run". The groove adds interest to the piece that doesn't come across in your average I-IV-V backing track. Vai especially is a composer first and foremost and I feel like the thought that goes into all the variables of his songwriting - not just the guitar - is part of his appeal to musicians in general.

Bassfa/gg/ here, can confirm - when my band's guitarrist decide to give a try to a Satriani song I could certainly feel it after a while, it became quite obvious, the bass and rhythm guitar actually have some rhythm and variation to it. Hell, at one point the bass even has a little solo of its own.

In all honesty it's pretty much like playing in a jam with someone that's much better than everyone that's playing and that you guys feel free to let him take over but he's not being an asshole about anything. You know who the guy with the great licks and that's going to stand out is, but you all are contributing and having some improvisation going.

i'm a drummer that wants to be able to write my own music
not sure if i should pick up guitar or keyboard / synth
i know which notes are which on the neck if given enough time to find them
i really just want to approach another instrument as a songwriter and not a guitarist or pianist
which one do you guys think would be easier for this purpose?
if i end up with a guitar i'd buy a princeton reverb, jazzmaster / telecaster / stratocaster, a fuckload of OBNE pedals because they sound cool as shit, and a looper
if i go the synth route i'd probably buy a microkorg and a korg monologue or something
>>
>>72883887
>i really just want to approach another instrument as a songwriter and not a guitarist or pianist

>>
>>72884261
Midi in a DAW isn't written for you by software. It's just a way for you to write music and be able to instantly hear it back. It's a composition tool, and it can even be the final product depending on what you're going for. It's composition without the limitations of having to play an instrument. Almost exactly what you said you wanted
>>
>>72884305
what's the difference with that and just using a synth?
>>
>>72884350
The physical limitation of your skills with a keyboard compared to entering notes one by one without worrying about performance

Technically you could control a synth with midi the same way, but then it's pointless to buy the hardware unless you're after a very specific sound it offers or want to play with the keyboard

Most "normal" boutique pedals (i.e big muff copies, fuzz face copies, compressors, simple delays, overdrives etc) aren't worth the money. That's where most the disappointment will come from, the fact that there's a $60 pedal that will sound 90% as good.

why do strat copies sound thinner
they usually come out with fat sounding, overwound pickups that compensates it
if you swap them for good, clear fender pickups like the 57/62, the guitar will sound thin in comparision to a MIA fender strat
why does that happen? they usually have decent steel saddles, big (pot metal, but still big) trem block, yet they sound thin compared to a fender strat with the same pickups

>>
>>72895151
I think my Chinese strat sounds incredible. It's going to end up passing up my american tele and my SG standard as my main gigging guitar, honestly. I can't comment on a pickup swap yet though, been thinking about throwing some lindy fralin blues special singles or split blades in though and I'll eventually post here if I do. I'm more than happy with it, I was jut never a strat guy so I couldn't justify $1500 for a strat just because I wanted a single coil guitar other than a tele to record with.

Thinking about it, I don't like fender pups that much. I thought my tele sounded weak til I put some Lindy's in it, now it kills. The only guitars I've ever considered pickup swaps on within the first week are fenders, ibanez(excluding basses) and deans.

Listen critically at least twice(3 times is best focusing in vocal cues, then drums/other percussion, then guitar), listen casually like an hour later, ignore for like a day, come back and fake my way through it, if it has weird chords or I don't have time to break it down I go to the internet. Practice like twice after I have a grasp of the song. Once a day for a week. I play in 2 cover bands and that's how I learn everything. If I had and hour free every night I can fully learn 5 or 6 songs a week covering all nuances. I learned a 2 hour set with unfamiliar songs in 10 days using this method.
