I am not talking about the chords and notes, I am talking about how their voices actually sound due to the mixing and vocal directing. It simply sounds outdated and not good to me.

Personally I am not good at analyzing chords and melodies and cannot hear what you are describing well except when it is obvious (like the discordant sound on the 2nd syllable of the prolonged "gossip"). Earlier today I was reading about Rush's Subdivisions and people were discussing their use of the harmonic minor and I would have never heard it myself. There are times when I hear interesting melodies or chords and I can't put my finger on why due to my weak background and that sucks, but this track you linked didn't really feel like one of them. Usually I am more interested in beat or if something has good sound design or groove/coordination.

I wouldn't say in general the mixing itself is bad or anything for Gossip Girls, we have had decent mixing for decades even though pop had a pretty bad era. It is more like the vocals sound a little unclear and the synths sound way too simple. It isn't just the sound, but how they are using the sounds as well. The super simple beat with the clapping doesn't help. It just feels flat to me.

If you go listen to Gee, then listen to WoW!, a track that is often hated by a group that is often labeled nugu, you can really hear the gap even though WoW is still using pretty simple synth sounds. Regardless of whether or not you like the actual composition of the track, everything just sounds much clearer and better thought out in terms of layering, sound design/balance, and mixing.

Getting into the topic of the loudness war is a very iffy topic I think because people like to spout things about compressors and loudness when the reality is much more complex and originates in signals processing. I had an article on this that was way the fuck over my head that I can't seem to find now. Regardless, professionals in the industry know much more than we do. Not having compressors at all is a horrible idea, I can at least say that without a shadow of a doubt, and obviously going overboard and fucking dynamics/clipping is also bad.

That's literally one guy in here my friend, everything minus Candy Jelly Love is great. Onepiece is a fucking great team of composers. Although, with Gossip Girls it'd help if you listened to the FLAC, while I like lyric videos, I don't know what kind of track they used, could even be a 128 MP3 which would sound even worse when youtube does their processing. Gee was a little stretch there, there's really nothing interesting there other than a catchy sound.

And don't get me wrong, I know exactly why they production is like that; people listening with headphones with a natural sound is not their target demographic.

Right, I am listening with 558s and it's a shame that so much subtlety is missed simply because of shitty laptop speakers, car speakers, etc. It sucks if dynamics and subtlety are sacrificed habitually for that reason, but to tell you the truth dynamic range is virtually never my problem with music.
