What is it about socially-isolated weirdos that makes them such great musicians? Here's a list of some of my faves:
Abner Jay
Daniel Johnston
Gary Wilson
Michael Hurley
R. Stevie Moore
Ted Hawkins
Please share more musically-inclined misanthropes.
I don't consider Gary an outsider artist. I've talked to him before. Hes just weird. Nothing wrong with him.
If Gary Wilson is outsider R Stevie Moore or Ariel Pink are "outsider"

can you really judge that much just from meeting someone once? even if he is just a weird guy, does someone have to have something wrong with them to be an outsider artist? I think it's more about being separated from the popular music industry to a point that it has zero influence on the artist's music.

I think adversity has a huge influence on what one creates, and a lot of outsider artists have experienced some sort of rejection, mistreatment, or substantial separation from normality. Does it make their music better? I wouldn't say that, but I think it can add a certain poignancy to already emotional music. You could say the same thing about any sad song sung by anyone who's been through a rough time, but I guess there's just some intangible quality these artists have that most don't? Maybe it's just the eccentricity. Who knows.
