He didn't really destroy them, he just noted that having a steady output of music in the 60s/70s was more of an obligation, financially and otherwise, whereas bands like Tool have a more casual relationship with music. I don't really understand what he means by the modern music listener wanting "convenient" music, though. There's still one hell of a demand out there for unique sounds, especially in prog rock. His whole career is kind of testament to the fact that a lot of people enjoy his style of music. "Born in the wrong era" my ass, you're doing just fine.
