Brendan Canty is probably the best drummer in rock music and one of the general GOATs. There are drummers that I like probably just as much as them, but I think none of them have played as much of a role in the quality of their music than Canty. Fugazi just wouldn't work without him (this is true for any member in the band though, Joe Lally is definitely one of the rock bass GOATs, they are my favorite rock rhythm section.)
This is applicable to Walford too, but Slint just don't have the discography to match Fugazi's, though it is still quality.

His playing is almost... melodic? It's incredible.

>As long as they can keep a rhythm the song is fine

easier said than done.

once you've been in a band with an excellent drummer, you realize how valuable they are. a good drummer is extremely valuable.

average drummers are bad drummers.

good drummers are good.

great drummers make being in a band fucking awesome. everyone else can be more creative and take more risks with a great drummer. everyone else can ask the drummer to do specific changes or arrangements, and a great drummer delivers every time, effortlessly.

the drummer in my band is great. literally never misses a beat. literally can respond to arrangement changes instantly and never forgets his parts. always listens to us. he knows when things are going smoothly and how to smooth them out if they're not.

how to find a great drummer: typically the ones who have actual training like marching band, but also have good social lives.

This is absolutely not true for any artist that relies on the rhythm section in any substantive way.

The list of rock bands that succeeded in spite of having an average drummer are like, count on one hand type shit.

Actually I can only name White Stripes. Ringo was above average.
>>
>>72822717
100% this

nearly all bands straight up can't be successful without a good drummer
>>
>>72822669
It's funny that good/sane drummers are so hard to come by that you're gushing over the fact that your current drummer can both actually play + not be a piece of shit.

I remember my first band, we finally found a kid that was pure fire on the set. Total synergy, seemed to instinctively know all our songs, etc. Kid was such a piece of shit that it was one of the first times I've ever fantasized about murdering another human being..
>>
>>72822760
for real. my roommate is a decent drummer, and i tried to start a project with him, but he's just too awkward to hang with and bounce ideas off of.

having a drummer that's a good person means less stress for the band, better communication, and therefore better music. better chemistry

life's too short to put up with annoying drummers. the position is too fundamental to a good band. it typically isnt tolerated
>>
>>72820297
>he's never played with a jazz drummer with 14 years of experience

oh how lucky i am to have one in my band.

he is overrated as fuck, but he's is genuinely talented. Word is, he's actually a really great studio drummer too, cause he can keep a straight beat really really tight when he has to.

It's a shame that after A change of Seasons (I think that's what it's called) all the instruments started overplaying. I used to like it but after a while I realised it's horrible.

Side note, that band made me appreciate simple music cause overplaying ruins songs

There's no best drummer.

The only sense in which you could objectively compare musicians is technical skill, which is not all there is to music. And if you did compare drummers by their technical ability then people like Buddy Rich and Jojo Mayer would blow everyone out of the water. That's not all there is to music though.

>Right, can anyone explain to me why exactly Ringo was an above average drummer?
1) He would literally play drums for 8 hours straight in the studio for 8 years while the other three Beatles worked out their shit, never missing a beat. note he's a little guy.
2) He played for the song rather than himself, as in he would do what's right for the song rather than play flashy and detract from it. He also had a good feel for the appropriate part to fit the atmosphere for the song. Listen to Mr Kite.
3) He was one of the first drummers to really ride the open hi hat, making a heavy and strong drum beat.

Mike Mitchell is a young drummer who has been playing the Stanley Clarke gig since he was 17 years old.
Chris Dave is the creator of modern hiphop drum playing. Literally a trend setter and has been producing behind the scenes working with people like Pete Rock, J Dilla, Beyoncé and Jay Z, along with numerous other hiphop acts for decades, not to mention his time touring and being the MD of people like Robert Glasper, D'Angelo, Kenny Garrett, etc etc etc. this is exactly what I mean. You motherfuckers know dick about drums outside of your /mu/core. It's so sad. Any hiphop drummer you hear today playing dilla beats, chris Dave was doing that shit before anyone else in the early 90s.

Monster musicians play pop music all the time. Thomas Lang, Stanley Randolph, Dave Elitch, among many many many other artists are all monsters on their instrument and play pop tunes. The best drummers are chameleons and can make anything feel good, from songo to samba to pop to fusion to country to jazz. That's the art of the instrument. You niggers don't understand that. You need to.

I can't believe this is even debated, The Beatles were an incredible live unit in their early days playing like 18 hour sets on speed in Hamburg. Ringo was a fucking professional and a workhorse. Nobody is arguing that he was a technical wizard, we're saying that technical wizardry is not a prerequisite for being above average.
>>

I don't think versatility is necessary to be one of the best drummers. Take Ward and Moon. Ward is a far more versatile drummer, whereas Moon basically did one thing and the band based their entire approach around it.

Both are among the greatest drummers of all time and I would hardly say Ward was superior on the basis of his greater adaptability.

>That's the art of the instrument
Nah it's just one potential approach. Not every vocalist has to be Mike Patton either.

That's hilarious. Neil Peart is the best at playing Rush. Put him behind anything else and he can't hang. Back in the days when the world was larger you could get away with playing one thing and one thing only. You'd have to be really lucky or really good at doing just one thing in this day and age to make a living doing only one thing. This is why drummers are also producers, MD, composers, engineers, you name it it's all apart of the culture now. You're stuck in the past. The modern drummer has to be a chameleon to survive. Just ask any of the top drummers in the world. There's a podcast dedicated to talking to drummers who are making the big bucks in the business and guess what, unanimously disagree with you. Drummers resource podcast. Start listening. There are over 250 podcasts and 300 hours of information on there for you to figure out what the fuck a modern drummer does. Again. /mu/ is full of retards and kids. Go figure.
>>
>no jazz drummers
There's something to be said for complex fills, simple beats, and a consistent feel, but y'all really don't know much about the complexity a great drummer can bring to a song without muddling it down.
>>
>>72838579
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aas9NDzH_sY
forgot the link. And yes, good jazz players know not to overplay, too. But there's a place for complex rhythms and implementing those without losing your tempo or the dynamics of the song is so much harder than just playing fills and parts.
>>
>>72838602
>b-but Danny Carey...

It's no use. Think of a majority of the demographic of 4chan. Socially awkward neets who don't go out and experience the world. Why on earth would they know anything about what musicians actually do in real life instead of what they read on the internet. They don't get it. Some of them will. The rest will remain ignorant till they grow up if they ever do.
>>
>>72837711

>>
>>72838564
Dude, for any actual working class musician you have to have serious chops and be able to play anything. That's neither here nor there. The era of the rock star is over, we all get that.

My argument is simply that Peart should be considered a great drummer in spite of only being able to play Rush.

My friend and I were both pretty hot on guitar in high school, he ended up becoming a session musician and I didn't precisely because I didn't have the discipline and versatility you're talking about. So I get you, but it's kinda sad that you're so proud of your *insider knowledge* that you're going to call me a retard.
>>
>>72838723
did the mean words hurt your feelings? Insider knowledge you speak of is common knowledge among musicians who leave their bedroom. This thread is a great example of people who don't do that. I call those people retards because they haven't figured out music isn't about sitting in your room and shedding all day and listening to music. That's definitely part of the equation, but not it. You know you need real world experience to make it. These people here don't get that.
Also I conceded Neil is great at doing Neil, but nothing else. I memorized all his drum parts in moving pictures as a 12 year old. Been there done that. I know better.
>>
>>72837823
>posting on 4chan from your gig
Nah. You're just some dumb kid
>>
>>72838810
Your post degenerates into parody so quickly. Are you the same guy on your smartphone during the set? Typical drummer I suppose. And by the end you're better than Neil Peart.

You didn't hurt my feelings, it's just a rubric used to assess whether or not you're an asshole. The rubric is: do you senselessly talk shit about others when you could be learning from them and enjoying their company.

>musicians who leave their bedroom
It really doesn't have relevance to the topic at hand. You're not one of the great drummers just because you can memorize Rush songs. You don't get musicianship the same way the movie Whiplash didn't get it.

>tfw 12 bar blues makes you several hundred dollars a night
So does my studio

What shit-town do you live in where the only thing happening on a Wednesday night is a blues band playing at a Cracker Barrel? The reality is that you play every night because you have absolutely no good competition or a scene, so you settle for what's there without really improving yourself. When I was on tour we played some shitty festivals in middle-America, and these local bands who played a lot were just fucking awful. But they didn't know it, because they were the only band in like a 30 mile radius and never had to be better to get better gigs to beat out better bands.

Sorry if that's you. Ringo is still a fine drummer.

>Garage Band
>Sonor
One is a drum the other is a DAW. What a moron.
Post your drum tracks. You hype your studio, show us your veteran work.

>what shit-town
The live music capital of the world. There are thousands of musicians here. I get called to play all the time because there is always work for good drummers in town. I just got off of tour myself and I'll be going back on the road in two weeks hitting several spots in Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, and Tennessee. Sucks you live in the middle of nowhere where you don't get gigs. Maybe you'll figure it out.

Shit riff also you're rushing

>One is a drum the other is a DAW
What?
>Sucks you live in the middle of nowhere where you don't get gigs
No, I live in one of the biggest music scenes in the the US

Any other useless, unimpressive dickwaving you want to do?
>>
>>72848440
So you don't know what a DAW is but you own a studio? That doesn't add up.
You're the one who brought touring and where I live into this. I get it, you live in a scene where you don't get hired. That's unfortunate. Maybe if you spent less time in your bedroom and more time meeting people and playing music with people you'll actually land a gig.
Also post your drum tracks. You must be really good!

>So you don't know what a DAW is
>Sonar, what's that?
embarassing
>You're the one who brought touring
Right, so then you used misdirection to focus on where I live, even though I never mentioned it (unless you think "touring" means playing locally?)

Listen, I'm older than you and have been doing this longer than you. I don't care you play shitty bars every day, it doesn't impress me. it doesn't make your wrong opinion better, just more embarrassing. That's shit I was doing when i was 19.

That awkward moment when I've been playing professionally since age 13.
>b-but I'm older...
And don't have a gig. Go figure.
>>
>>72848553
And I was unaware traveling thousands of miles was considered "playing locally"

>That awkward moment when I've been playing professionally since age 13.
And still playing shitty bars? lol
>And don't have a gig
Owning a studio, playing in 4 bands and touring isn't a gig?

If you're out of things to say, just stop posting. I'm sure you gotta prep for your gig at Cracker Barrel tonight.

>bar gigs are beneath me and my studio band
Hohoho
You must really enjoy playing drums like I do. Because everyone I know that are killers and have larger gigs than I do still meet up at bars, hang, and sit in. You know, what musicians call "the hang". That Cracker Barrel gig and other like I pay me $200 garuntee plus tips, $100tab and a meal. I spend 3 hours playing music and make my money so I can go and shed, take my girl out, hang with other musicians, and then play another 3 hours and make more money and repeat. But you're older than I am so you should already know this, but I get the impression that you don't. I wonder why? Maybe it's because you're full of shit.

If you say so kid. Have fun on Cracker Barrel on Wednesdays.
