stereolab
people have tried, but the sounds on this album cannot be recreated
it is such a spontaneous project and anything trying to imitate it will sound forced and not nearly as good
that's why there has never been a good cover of sister ray or i heard her call my name

Stereolab for the organ sounds
The fall use a velvet underground riff in this song

What about the dark lyrical themes of prostitution, sadism, masochism, transsexuality, botched surgeries, murder and so on?

Yeah you're gonna want Soft Cell for that, try Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret and The Art of Falling Apart. A couple tracks on This Last Night in Sodom fit the bill as well but that album isn't as good as the others.

the occasional patti smith track for that john cale influence? definitely not all her work though
To me the velvet underground just capture that fucking spirit of new york back when it was actually cool and not some gentrified tourist trap.
