You may post itt if you're sdc

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Hello, I have a question. I'm working on a sweater and some music may help connecting the various ideas floating around in my head. I'm looking for music about Italian futurism, fascism and militarism. Rutracker has an album called "Futurism & Dada reviewed" but I was wondering if there was anything else. I hope this is the right thread to ask.

So Starsailor was surprisingly cool, you guys weren't lying. Also Angles 9 - Disappeared Behind the Sun was fantastic, one of my favorites of 2017. Thanks EthyBoy wherever you are.

The Laurel Halo leak is promising, but the audio quality was shit. I'm withholding opinions.
>>
>>72777901
Well there's also the Musica Futurista compilation in rutracker.

For music about militarism, and to a lesser extent fascism, maybe try martial industrial, although it has little to do with futurism and I'm not sure it's what you're asking for.

Thank you. Martial Industrial sounds very unpleasant (such is war), but useful. Besides that complication I have OMD - Dazzle Ships and Berlin Express - Die Russen Kommen in my backlog. The sweater in question is a critique of another sweater I made (>>12463774). Now I want to talk about how space travel is an extension of conflicts, instead of a way to human understanding, to equality and about the tyranny of the masses (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2pC1JKwn0Bi2y4v6D6fkrf9roSDrEgcx + Post, J.M & Panis, L.K. (2011). Crimes of Obedience: “Groupthink” at Abu Ghraib.). It's just that the previous sweater came together so easily. Is it a writers block? Far too complex?

You'd have better luck with the Russian/Belarusian/Georgian/Ukrainian part of futurism than the Italian one. The Italians were more into painting than recorded music; most of what you can find (which is little, as most people aren't comfortable releasing things so closely related to fascism) would end up being recreations. The two compilations that have been mentioned + the first 24 tracks on the Ruidos y Susurros de las Vanguardias (1909-45) comp would be about as much as you could get in terms of recorded content for Italian stuff. You could look into the texts and paintings as well, as they are pretty cool, or Bragaglia's photography.

Also check out the short movie Thaïs; it's the only surviving Italian futurist movie (directed by Bragaglia as well!).

>Michael Mayer – Immer
A fucking stellar DJ Mix. The entire thing is fast, energetic, and beautiful. This is definitive proof of how much skill is needed to make a good DJ mix, as every single piece, though switching between countless forms, locations, and genres, all sound cohesive and as if they were made with each other in mind. “Palersam the Cat” is kind of shitty, otherwise this is amazing.
9

>Desertshore – s/t
Minus the obvious Pale Cocoon release, this has to be Pafe’s best output. A surprisingly consistent, energetic, and creative post-punk EP that’s everything I want from something like this and then some. I wouldn’t in good faith recommend it to someone who doesn’t dig this sort of thing, but if you do you’re certainly in for a good ass time.
9

>Various Artists - Lost in the Stars: The Music of Kurt Weill
What the FUCK is this??? WHO is Kurt Weill? What did he do? Why is literally every artist ever including Tom Waits, John Zorn, Lou Reed, Van Dyke Parks, and Sting on this? Why am the only person out of my 158 RYM friends to hear this even though it has 250- ratings? A lot of amazing and occasionally experimental renditions of some songs that were great to begin with. If you backlog anything out of what I list here today, make sure it’s this. Kind of amazing.
8

>Alban Berg Quartett - String Quartets
Not something I think I’d personally recommend or claim to really “get”, but there’s little denying how beautiful the rendition of these pieces are. Really emotional, creative, and quick-progressing some of these pieces were left me pretty speechless. Ideal if string quartets are your gig.

>Karlheinz Stockhausen - Elektronische Musik
Though I’ve heard some of these pieces so far, I would argue this is the best release with Stockhausen’s name on it (that I’ve heard, anyways). It’s for sure a headphone album that requires a lot from the listener. Don’t expect to sit down and have it bang. I say that semi-condescendingly, but I’m pretty sure I don’t understand much of what’s happening here either. And maybe that’s for the best.
8

>Albert Ayler - Lörrach/Paris 1966
The only complaint about I have about this is, ironically, one of my favorite parts of the album. Although the violin performances and fusion into this form of jazz really brings out some creative and unique pieces, it ultimately gets tiring after a bit, especially for how prevalent it is. Otherwise, this is probably one of my favorite jazz live performances. Peep this shit.
8

>Bauhaus - The Sky's Gone Out
The more I hear from this band, the more they become one of my favorites out there. For how much everyone shits on everything by them minus their first album and single, they’ve had surprisingly consistent quality so far. Not just in terms of their discography, but individually all of their albums have stood up just fine, and demonstrated how much Peter Murphy can really do with this genre. Far from the more creative stuff in this genre, but it’s damn good, alright?
8

>Little Richard – s/t
Not perfect or for everyone, but it’s hard not to hear a little in everything you love rooted from this LP. The energy and passion is unreal at times. Of course Lucille and Good Golly, Miss Molly are fantastic, but They Keep on a-Knockin’ has gotta be my favorite cut here. There’s maybe a bit too much country-rock in a few of these tracks, but an essential, even if you don’t like it.
7

>Maurizio - MCD
Satisfyingly empty. It goes nowhere slow and it’s beautiful. It’s no Basic Channel but hey it’s pretty fucking good okay?

>စုဝေ - ဂီတပုံရိပ်
Perhaps a bit surprising at first, but after the first couple of songs, it’s really nothing surprising in the slightest. In fact, it doesn’t mind being repetitive and basically the same thing for an LP length. If you want to listen to some traditional southeast Asian music recorded very recently, but don’t really mind listening to the same song for 40 minutes.
6

>Gentle Giant - Acquiring the Taste
For a very roots-prog album, I was very surprised by how much I enjoyed this. It’s wanky and all over the place at times, sure, but it always has a sense of cohesiveness and melody in general that I think is missing from much of the genre. Their best and most consistent output.
6

>Felix Laband - Deaf Safari
Dark Days Exit isn’t perfect, but it’s damn near close. Some of the most excellent atmospheres ever made in the electronic genre. Some had the complaint of it being a tad overlong, however, I would argue Deaf Safari suffers from this much more extremely. The longer pieces here are nice, but rarely ever feel justified just being a looped version of an entire track. Good if you liked his earlier album, but could’ve been 20 minutes shorter easily.
6

>Tommy Wright III - On the Run
Much better quality (both in terms of songwriting and literal recording) than Ashes 2 Ashes, Dust 2 Dust, but still littered with mediocrity. Lots of choice cuts in terms of beats and whatnot, but a lot of worthless non-energy MCs and some unredeemable shit, but also pretty fun in that regard. If you’re really stretching for some decent Memphis rap and you’ve already heard all the greats, maybe you’ll dig this more than I.
6

>INU - メシ喰うな!
As post-punk, it totally fails, but as high energy New Wave it does alright. It’s pretty fun and exciting, albeit a bit daft and repetitive.

>Death - Individual Thought Patterns
Not bad, but easily the worst thing I’ve heard by them. The playing is fine, and in fact, it’s quite amazing at times. However, it’s technical almost never in a satisfying form like they’ve created before. Sure, it exists, but it’s just very forgettable. It might as well not, but maybe it wouldn’t mind either way.
6

>Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson - Thick as a Brick 2
It’s garbage, but pretty high quality garbage. Even though it’s just a worse (much MUCH worse) version of what Anderson has done better in the past, it’s obvious the dude has a real talent for melody and creative songwriting. For what it is, totally not terrible, but if you’re a JT fan to any extent I would say it’s at least worth a try.
5

>Mark Morgan – Fallout/Fallout 2: The Soundtrack
Although I love these games and the way the soundtracks are integrated into the game to create some otherworldly atmosphere, as stand-alone albums these kinda suck. The textures are week and uncreative. As stand-alone ambient pieces, sometimes it enriches, but rarely, if ever.
4 for both

>Suzanne Ciani - Buchla Concerts 1975
Am I alone in feeling that this is totally worthless, and just electro-wankery? The Buchla is an amazing instrument with some beautiful timbres, but I feel like she steps into these uncharted waters to make some really boring snooze-mospheres. Perhaps interesting for the history and innovation, but does nothing for me.
3

>Nazareth - Hair of the Dog
Bad but also not very good.
3

>Sabbat - The Dwelling
Really shit, basic thrash metal that attempts to be much more epic that it actually is, and fails hilariously.

Little Richard - Here's Little Richard (1957)
>rock & roll, rhythm & blues

The energy on some of these tracks is incredible, with Richard’s infectiously energetic, scratchy vocals taking charge on nearly every song, occasionally bursting into a really jarring, wonderful falsetto. Like most other ‘50s rock & roll records, it’s admittedly /really/ repetitive, with a lot of songs utilizing the same melodies and pretty much all of the songs using the same structure, and the slower songs pale in comparison to the upbeat, fast-paced songs, but the energy stays consistent enough to keep the album fun throughout.

Quick reviews here. I like these freeform charts but I'm also going through these huge swings of listening to music idk.

Frank Zappa - One Size Fits All
>Jazz-Rock, Prog Rock

Zappa’s little foray into prog is pretty nifty. It isn’t so much as a sharp departure into prog as it is a continuation of his earlier jazz fusion albums. There’s some additional satire and spoof concepts thrown in the mix but they aren’t as heavy-handed as his earlier albums. “Inca Roads” is straight up magestic, with the guitar work shining through in that cool, precise tone I love in prog. And the moogs/synths are so tight. I almost wish the vocals were completely left out, even though I kind of chuckled at how ridiculous they were on first listen.

None of the tracks quite live up to the amazing opener though. The album is scattered with little spoof pieces that aren’t as blunt as usual - they’re just goofy. “Can’t Afford No Shoes” is typical Zappa goofiness that verges on too slapstick for me. God damn if it isn’t catchy though. “Pro-Jama People” is actually funny, as is the “Evelyn, A Modified Dog”/“San Ber’dino” duo. The second best cut is probably “Andy” which has such tight guitar riffs and nice piano scattered throughout.

What makes this album so great is Zappa’s compositional skills. They’re always on display on his albums but on here he actually kinda takes himself seriously here, cranking out some killer tracks. The xylophone is on point as always and the guitar playing, though a little noodly, is consistently sharp and impressive. His approach to comedy is fairly toned down imo (or I’m just getting used to it) and combined with the impressive compositions, it leads to one of the better Zappa albums out there. Feels like a combo of early comedy and 70s fusion Zappa and it’s a great sound.

Caretaker - Everywhere At the End of the World, Part 2
>Ambient

Caretaker does the same exact thing he’s ever done and it’s still dope. Basically just old jazz 78s slowed down and thrown into some misty, electronic filters to form ambient atmosphere. The songs have this weird mix of calming and eerie, it’s one of the cooler sounds I’ve heard in electronic music - especially considering how simple the concept is. It doesn’t strike me as much as An Empty Bliss for some reason, even though it’s basically another sequel. I’m not sure if the novelty has worn off or if that’s actually his best project... but this is still kinda cool.

3.5

Foetus - Nail
>Industrial

I’ll admit I’m not much for industrial, post-punk or anything in that realm but I fucking loved this. The whole album manages to have menacing, dark undertones while also staying catchy and weirdly accessible. I think the fact that the album tries to be epic and cinematic softens the blow during most of the songs. The synths, occasional strings and layered instrumentals keep it surprisingly light. There’s even a little sax and a bouncy bassline on “Di-1-9026” that gave it a dance-y (albeit awkwardly dance-y) vibe I absolutely loved. It’s still a bit of a clusterfuck of noise compared to an average track but still. Synths on here range from awkward to catchy to eerie and it’s pretty cool to hear how these guys can be so versatile with the use of one instrument.

There’s still some moments that are a bit heavy though, like “Enter the Exterminator”, with the whispery vocals and scraping instrumentals. The 80s drum machines on the album can also be unsettling at moments, when they’re used correctly. All things considered, the album has far fewer of these moments than I was anticipating. In fact, it verges on too cheesy at times for me, which is probably my biggest issue with it. Maybe I went into this with weird expectations but this was tight.

‘90s are definitely my favorite hip hop decade without a doubt

This has been a really fun chart!

http://i.imgur.com/Ci63iIh.jpg

Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth - Mecca and the Soul Brother (1992)
>east coast hip hop, boom bap, conscious hip hop, jazz rap

Not as bloated as your All Eyez on Mes or your Life After Deaths, but eighty minutes is more time that either Pete Rock or C.L. Smooth needs. Smooth’s technical prowess gets a little bit old, and his lyrics aren’t anything special, and some of Rock’s beats have little more to offer than their banging drums. But these are issues that have more to do with this album’s length than the performances of its two leading artists, cut out twenty or thirty minutes and this would be incredible. Smooth is a joy to listen to, he’s really technical while still being super fun and a bit cheeky, and Rock embodies the boom bap sound better than any other producer I’ve heard, his drum sound is immaculte. Above all, its got “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)”.

3.0+

Viktor Vaughn - Vaudeville Villain (2003)
>abstract hip hop, east coast hip hop

Prime DOOM weighed down by some worthless skits. Some humor is nice, but both of the “Open Mic Nite” tracks fucking suck, and ruin the flow of the album. There’s also a lull at the tail end of the album, remedied only by the closing three minutes of “Change the Beat”. The production is /scary/ good, it’s got a very dark, uneasy vibe to it, and it works incrediblly well with DOOM/Viktor Vaughan’s persona. It may not reach the heights of Madvillainy or Take Me to Your Leader, but its still great, and more proof on how damned consistent this guy was at his peak. The rapping is great as well, he’s less deliberate and much more fast-paced, the change in personas brings on a change in vocal styles, and he pulls this new style off well.

Yeah 90s hip-hop tends to get over-glorified imo but there really was some dope music to come out of that decade. Compared to the scatterbrained 00s, it feels like a more consistent era. Not surprised it's your favorite so far

>Freddie Hubbard - Straight Life
>Post Bop, Jazz

Not gonna lie when I say that this is doesn't do much for me. Starts off strong, but is a bit too still for my liking. I think it's Herbie's piano that irks me (yes bring out the knives now). Hubbard's trumpet is good, Benson's guitar is pretty good for its placement in this group of people, DeJohnette's drums are much more cymbal-heavy at first due to Weldon Irvine's tabla, but maybe that's just the mixing.

Listen to Mr. Clean first for the better solos. Here's That Rainy Day is if you feel like dying.

6/10

>Robbie Basho - Visions of the Country
>American Primitivism, Country

I was happy to learn that Basho doesn't sing constantly through this album, as great as his voice is. He lets the guitar speak when it wants to, and sings when it wants to take a step back.

The variety of sound is surprising, given that this is American Primitivism. The fiddle and Basho's voice really do make the album feel like a homely meal, late at night. I find it hard to believe that there's only one guitar playing sometimes, like on Variations on Easter. Rocky Mountain Raga is a pleasurable hike, and of course Blue Crystal Fire has Basho at his most tender.

Orpheus Lament is even better than Crystal fire, with a pedaled piano serving as the chorus for Basho singing at his strongest.

i want this man to be my uncle

8/10

>Genetics and Windsurfing - Audio Stream Continuum
>Electronic, Noise

This is no drone/ambient album, this is busy blown out beats flying past your hovercar. Likes to loop its track to disorienting effect, entering and exiting at will with its sound.

Not necessarily bad, for as tightly crunched this is. Just didn't leave an impact on me, aside from its third track.

>Can - Ege Bamyasi
>Krautrock, Experimental Rock

This required me to play it multiple times AND be in the right mood to enjoy. I would have written it off as a 3/10 for being dull distilled rock. Was DEFINITELY the guitars used here that turns me off. Kenji Suzuki's vocal performance grew on me after a while, Vitamin C being the I enjoyed first.

Soup is a good track. The rest didn't do anything for me. One More Night and Sing Swan Song are irritating to listen to. I guess I don't """get""" it.

Danny Brown - Hot Soup
>Boom Bap, Jazz Rap

Hearing Danny Brown over these beats is fucking weird. I’m so accustomed to hearing him over those wild experimental beats and here he is rapping over boom bap. The beats have that breezy midwest/soulful feel, sounding like any underground album from the 00s. Strings, lots of Motown influence (plenty of dialogue samples about it to) and a clean, almost glossy vibe. Man there’s even some turntable work on here. There’s hints of electronic stuff like “What Up Doe” and “Gun In Yo Mouf” but they’re a far cry from the craziness of XXX or AE. As a whole, it’s much different but I personally think this style is beautiful and one of the best in hip-hop.

Lyrically, Brown isn’t quite on the same level as he is now. That should be obvious - this project is almost 10 years old now. But it’s not that he doesn’t have nice lyrics or entertaining things to say - his delivery is just completely different. The whole ODB vibe is completely absent on here, as he mostly raps in that low-key tone he resorts to on his more depressing cuts. It’s still nice but when he gets to punchlines, he doesn’t hit as hard. The charisma is still there, he just doesn’t have the same impact.

One of my favorite parts about Danny Brown’s music is how hard he reps Detroit. It’s become a bit of a punching bag for outsiders in past years but Brown still stays positive. I know it probably sounds stupid but it’s nice to hear him show both sides of a city. On this album, he shows a positive side of the city, throwing in historical samples and relying on a more Midwest style of production. His recent style is tight, as he shows the grittiness and realism of the city but hearing him put a positive spin on things is kind of refreshing in a way.

Anyway, I think Brown still could have succeeded if he stayed down this path but I’m glad he switched it up. Good stuff.

Kanye West - Late Registration (2005)
>hip hop

I can’t help feeling that West has never made a truly cohesive album. Even My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, his most fully-realized, and his best, work to date, has some incredibly odd decisions that horribly break up the flow of the album. On The College Dropout, this problem is easily chalked up to the album’s abundance of skits, but on here this problem is mostly rectified. The skits here don’t really fit with the vibe the rest of the album presents, but they’re funny, and they have their own underlying story. It’s the major differences between songs that is this album’s downfall. The whole album is a very odd mixture of straight-up hip hop, boom bap, and super poppy neo-soul, and none of it really works. The pop especially doesn’t work, the hooks aren’t all that great, and only the poignant, retrospectively heartbreaking “Hey Mama” delivers. The actual rap is real good though. “Heard 'Em Say” is poppy as hell but West’s rapping is on point, the beat is beautiful, and Adam Levine is actually really good; “Gold Digger” is a classic; and “Diamonds From Sierra Leone” has a killer, hard-hitting beat and a wonderful verse from Jay-Z. I’d say I like it more than The College Dropout, but it’s still plagued with some issues.

Luciano Cilio - Dialoghi del presente

What the FUCK. I don't really have time to articulate my entire thoughts on this, but holy jesus was this amazing. Thank you >>72784751
for getting me to quickly knock this off my backlog, because it ended up being one of the best pieces of sparse music I've ever heard.

5/5 (not entirely sure if I'll keep it here, going to relisten)

That album's certainly up there for me. One of the closest albums to getting a perfect score, I just haven't had t the time to sit down and really listen to it a hundred times and know it well enough to write a lengthy review on it.

I need to start this up again it's been months, Jesus.

>>72785926
yeah fuck.. i'm kind of getting a gut feeling that this should be a 4.5/5 instead, but then I look at some of my 4.5/5s and see that this seems so much better

well i've only just listened to it, maybe I'll get more confidence in whatever rating I go with after a few relistens
>>
Holy FUCK 94 the Long Way is perfect.

>>72785940
I would, but I've already decided that Woodbine is gonna keep it from being a 10. I'll give it a lengthy review some day, but I don't really know what I can convey other than just personal preference.
