Nick Cave

The Middle East

come from the place but I think most of us actually interested enough in music cast our ear elsewhere or get used to the shitty aussie hip hop or indie pop they push on most stations including triple J. Also the state of New York spread out over a country makes it hard to find out who good local acts are so either utter shit or critical darlings usually get pushed. You Am I are considered to be like the Australian Kinks or Rolling Stones in country yet elsewhere and on /mu/ no one gives a shit, they just care about muh avalanches or muh king gizzard or the latest Nick Cave. If you havn't listened to Hi Fi Way by You Am I you're missing out.

Hell even Anthony Fantano was blahing on about that Aussie Rock record he picked up on Record Store Day made by kids being all like "what a snap shot, wonder what they're doing now" not realizing one of them is fucking Ben Lee who got signed by The Beastie Boys label not long after that. People outside of Australia know dick about Australian music

>Perth is like a small town city
I came to this realisation just last night when I was watching an interview with that girl from 13 Reasons Why where she said that on Friday nights she would like to sit near that large screen in Northbridge and watch people go into clubs, which I have also done, and I was thinking whoa Perth is fucking tiny
>>
my mate is in a weird like 9 or 10 member, lo-fi band called mouseatouille. lo-fi noisey vibes. kinda biting neutral milk hotel a bit but not many people in aus really do that besides that smith street band cunt so it's still kind of interesting. i dont think they have any material out online yet but I've heard some of the stuff that he's recording / been to a gig and it's pretty cool. all really shit gritty home recordings, none of that typical polish and reverb that all the aus 'lo-fi' artists put on their shit.

melb indie music scene is mostly a cesspool but i go see / listen to my friend's bands. some off the top of my head are:

GOD$ - quite textured and nice

firstkiss - really badly eq'd lo-fi recordings but good songwriting and much better live. newest song was better quality.

wilfred - amazing lo-fi music imo, really interesting production.

mouseatouille - mentioned earlier, cool to see live bc they pack members on stage and play a lot of toy instruments. guy from firstkiss is in the band so somewhat similar songwriting.

good morning - really nice and funny guys, great catchy tunes.

what are some good under-underground melb bands? i'm mainly into lo-fi and noisey kinda stuff and i never really hear anything that is super cool when i go to gigs.

give me some names : ) mainly talking under-underground bc that's the scene i'm in ahah. obviously there are some great melb bands but a lot of the gig bands that play around melb at the gigs i go to are garagey-gizzy-beer-drinkin bands or indie pop bands.

i looove supporting local music tho so ill check out any bands that you'd suggest : )

I think you're just following the wrong path - take the time and go through the OP chart, there is a lot of incredible melb acts there. No Zu, Friendships, Kirkis, Corin and Lost Animal are all a good start. TOM TOM does good shows at Howler. These acts don't fuck around with supports / other artists they share a stage with, so follow from there I suppose.
