How important is mastering to a new producer? I haven't made a lot of music yet and I don't want to go through the trouble of something complikated like mastering and I don't want to pay someone else to master a mediocre trak made by an amateur.

>>
How do I make punk music without having any real instruments or friends?
>>
>>72768568
Amateur level mastering is basic as fuck. Just torrent izotope ozone and do the following in this order:
>(optional) add harmonic exciter to taste if your song is sounding a bit flat
>use the dynamic compressor to catch any excessive momentary imbalances and even up the frequency spectrum a bit
>(optional) add reverb if the song needs it, most people do this in the sound design or mixing stage though
>(optional) use the stereo imager to add width to the mids and highs if you think it needs it. Just a little though, too much can make weird artifacts.
>(highly recommended) pull down the stereo image for the lowest frequencies so they are 100% mono
>adjust the overall balance in the EQ to taste, meme of the day is to give it a profile similar to pink noise
>(optional) use a mid-side eq to cut bass and slightly boost the highs on the side channels. This is similar to what you might have already done with the stereo imager, you can do either or both.
>set the maximizer limit to ~-0.3 then start squishing, commercial EDM tracks can have an RMS of about -2 or 3 db but you will likely ruin the sound if you try to hit that when you are still learning. Just get it loud as possible without ruining the dynamics.

Even if you don't understand some of that it should make sense once you open the plugins and have a play around. By the way I'm not an expert, this is just my amateur method that works OK for me.
>>
>>72769749
I don't know how you can make punk without a guitar but I guess you could do Bauhaus-ish music with a daw.
>>
>>72769956
And for absolute lazy babbies:
>make bass frequencies mono with the stereo imager
>adjust EQ to taste
>make it loud as fuck with the maximizer
>>

Is it easy to buy drugs there?
>>
>>72770580
Your music probably isn't as well produced. You may come up with good interesting ideas, but are you executing them as well as these other guys? Are you mixes good? Are the songs at least somewhat catchy?

Good music is bound to get picked up even with average marketing behind it. Get a label behind you if you're so concerned.

Link us some of ur music.
>>

>Good music is bound to get picked up even with average marketing behind it. Get a label behind you if you're so concerned.

I'm not that guy but this is the least true thing I have ever seen.
>>
>>72770648
Yeah lol, drugs of all sorts are easy as shit to get in Belgium.

Just make sure to buy your drugs INSIDE the festival, they will search people pretty thoroughly on entry. No idea how some people get their stuff inside but they always do.

Dont buy drugs from french people.
Dont buy drugs from sandniggers.
Dont buy LSD or XTC unless you trust the person selling.

Best way to find a reliable source of drugs at a festival is to find someone who looks positively fucked up and just straight up asking.

Be wary of scams.
People that will rob your shit.
Make sure you keep your valuables close to you if you spend the night in a tent.
Usually french sandniggers will go to festivals to just slash open tents at night to steal shit.

I usually keep valuables with me IN my sleeping bag at my feet.

Festivals over here are pretty fucking fun solely because they are so dangerous and wild.

I'm trying to make synthpop like New Order, but I'm not trying to sound like a retro act. Whenever I try to write anything, it naturally comes out as too 80s sounding. But whenever I try to use more modern sounding samples and production it sounds too "house". Do any of you have suggestions of artists that get that 80s synthpop feel while being unmistakably modern, or have any tips for sounding modern without losing the synthpop sound?

>>
>>72774047
I think you might just be too self-conscious. The synthpop sound, compositionally, will sound like the 80s. That's just synthpop. The only difference with modern versions is there's more high-end sheen and maybe a fuller sound from layering more instruments / modern processing.

Here's a modern synthpop song and a genuine 80s song.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9cAnSpCsYM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hs7Jy2y-33A

Modern's just bigger and with sounds that aren't as muffled.
>>
>>72774047
I'm not sure what you mean. Synthpop will sound more modern if you use crispy samples and get a clean mix.

Going for an 80s sound? Try drone chords.

http://www.airwindows.com/ New plugin, Bite. Says it looks for incongruities, frizzy edges and such, on the waveform and exaggerates them. If I had to guess I'd say it's averaging out a few samples and subtracting the average from the original signal as a sort of sample-based exciter, maybe more complex than that. Should be good on gritty noises. It'll also subtract grit and frizz if you move the slider toward the negatives.

Can't hear it right now but from your explanation it looks like you might wanna use an EQ with the filter's height modulated to go down when the resonating parts happen. Also use a spectrum visualiser to individuate the frequencies that need to be lowered.

This is really good but I feel like structurally it could do with a fill/breakdown or two, even if its just dropping the drums out for a couple of bars.

Can anyone recommend any VSTs dealing with eastern instruments like from Japan or Iran, but that work for Mac? Stuff like a Gizeng or a Chang.
Keep finding decent ones that are Windows only.
>>
>>72790440
You're probably better off finding presets for vsts you already have. If there's one thing i learned it's that there certainly someone that has tried to synthesize any acoustic instrument and almost for sure someone has managed to do it one way or another.

Easiest way to rap is to do it like you're speaking normally. It gets obvious and cringy as hell when people force a "rap voice" because they think they're supposed to. You can add whatever sort of tone or emphasis on words as if youre genuinely saying it to someone.
>>
>>72791494
White people rapping is the most embarrassing thing in all of western culture. I wonder if people felt the same when white people first started playing blues, and clapton was basically eminem in that he was doing something ostensibly ridiculous but doing it well enough that he made it seem OK for everyone.

rapping isn't hard to learn and you don't need to be doing it since you were a kid like all these other retards are saying. its literally just speaking words rhythmically and rhyming sometimes.

i saw a fucking video of some white female teacher rapping out a dr seuss book ... this shit isn't rocket science

why even box your self in tho? rap when the song calls for rapping sing when it feels like you should sing and talk when it needs just spoken words

remove all labels if you want to really progress as an artist

also please don't only do that Eminem flow that every white boy seems to do, rapping fast isn't what good rapping is. flow with the beat, create a rhythmic atmosphere and give some good imagery

>>72790209
yeah i think you can do better with that synth. like the out of tune thing makes sense but it breaks up and should be more... solid. I get the lumish aesthetic but the vocals still need to be more audible

What that does is decreases the range of where in the waveform the note will start from. So if it is set to full as it is by default the note could start from any point in that waveform, meaning it will have a slightly different sounding attack each time. If you pull it right back then the waveform starts from wherever the yellow line is every time, move the yellow line around to get the exact tone you want at the beginning of the note.

compressors with a long attack and transient shapers + tight playing make it punchy. your snare already sounds squashed though

that track doesn't sound particularly special. first difference i noticed is a gated reverb on the snare that makes it sound a lot bigger... pretty much a typical 80's sound

how much ms is a long attack? it already has some compression on every track
i used a master limiter to compress it a bit and it killed the drums' attack/punch even though i used a fairly long attack setting and kept some dry non-limited signal
the overall mix sounded louder and fuller though.
but still not as full as that White Room mix. when i listen to my mix after that one, it feels a lot weaker sounding. maybe its a matter of EQing also?

there's such a thing as too much compression too. listening again your drums sound really dead. the guitars step over each other a lot too...

Leslie Sanford Cobalt was updated recently, even less CPU usage and it's now skinnable.

Back in the 80s hybrid synths were synths with digital waveforms and analog filters, this is based on that. It's got 26 waveforms resynthesized from genuine 80s hardware, PWM on anything, lots of modulation, all sorts of stuff. Try it out.

This >>72769390 is the truth. Mastering is one of the worst understood things in audio and audio is filled with people who don't understand the basics.

Mastering is a lot of things but it comes down to loudness mostly and a few other things. As long as your tracks are at a good level then you're fine. The other thing is mastering is done to make sure to the relative levels of multiple tracks are good. You want your tracks that sound like they should be around the same volume to actually be that way.
>>
>>72772936
I did a mix for class sounded fine. We're listening to it in class and it turns out one of the notes the bass player played often was resonating the entire fucking room.

If you have to ask you still have a lot to learn before you'll benefit from some fancy vst, unless you're planning on using presets, then whatever. Have you tried out any freebies yet?

>>
>>72807920
Why are you telling him to get a controller to learn how to mix "seriously" lol
>>
>>72807892
Pro tracks looking flat is part of the mastering, and keep in mind that's every instrument combined. If you pulled up the drum track I garuntee it has well defined transients and isn't just some block. For imitating that sound you should let the drums breathe a bit

You should be recording things with the mix in mind already- record each guitar with different amps, settings, pickups or whatever so they're distinguished and don't clash

Another example: like when that solo comes on, instead of lowering the volume of those chords try recording that part with the mic further back and maybe a darker tone and some verb.
>>
>>72808054
Because it's a really handy controller when mixing on ableton....what's a launchpad do - launch clips...have you used one? Obviously it's not going to mix for you, but it sure is helpful. I own one and a launchpad pro so...
>>
>>72808044
I've used a lot of freebies and pirate a lot onto ableton dw. I'm not that much of a noob. I just actually want to buy because I need so much more than the presets. You can only make a saw synth sound like something else until you completely fuck it to a certain point. I mostly make my synths from presets on ableton and play around with it and audio fx.

OK guys, here's a hip-hop instrumental I've done. I've sent it to at least 5 rappers and they're all too pussy to rap over it. The only parts they're not supposed to rap on is the chorus and the guitar parts.

Is there something wrong with it that makes it unfuckable-with?

Thanks in advance

i think he referred to the spectrum/dynamics too, as in "let the drums breathe"

Could be - "breathe" is quite ambiguous without context though and since transients were mentioned I took it to mean that they're talking about the dynamics of your drums and that you should avoid squashing them. They could've been talking about making sure the drums aren't fighting with other elements in the same frequency ranges too, but that wasn't really what I got from the post.

What I'd add about your mix itself is that the drums are certainly struggling to be heard and that's more the fault of the overall levels of the guitars, although the vocals are also too loud and don't sit in the mix, rather they sit on top of it.

I'd rebuild the mix with the drums and any bass sounds you're using being balanced first, then adding your guitars/piano and finally vocals - it's not uncommon for people who are primarily guitarists (is that the case here?) to have too keen an ear for their main instrument and to mix it too prominently, so try to focus on relative levels (drums-to-guitars, and then vocals-to-backing) in your reference track and keep going back and forth to your own mix to check.

Would I still be able to a music producer if I decided to live in the woods? Or in a cave?

>how to do that on the mastering?
>any idea on how to make the mix and the individual instruments sound full and loud like that song?

man all of this could be discussed endlessly, look up recording revolution on youtube, google around, all that
>what is a good attack value to keep the instruments' punch?

case by case basis. when using compressors or shapers for this purpose you're adding punch, not keeping it. you shouldn't be putting compressors on by default, only add it when you're sure you need it.

> you were referring to the spectrum I reckon

i just took that as him misusing the word.

>they're talking about the dynamics of your drums and that you should avoid squashing them.

exactly what i meant

the drums on that track he referenced have a pretty audible decay as well.

desu it sounds like you need to learn more of the basics. compression eq reverb recording technique will get you 90% there man, gotta learn those inside and out.

Why would you sample something so easy to synthesize yourself?

uh bad attitude+i'm wondering what you listen to that makes that beat sound like a good idea

rest of the music sounds random and just okay

Its clearly not hip hop in any way and is completely unsuitable for rapping. This isn't to say its bad, its decent enough its just not even in the same ballpark as "things to rap over".
