You're newer than I am, /mu/ loved Lonerism and Innerspeaker back in 2013 and up Currents was released. I grew up listening to things like the Beatles, and I see the influence but I don't get the claims that they're a direct copy. Currents was a disappointment for me, since it just sounded like they were trying to jump on the 80's pop revival instead of sticking to their own genre.

And don't you shittalk gizz for being the hipster option. That's like saying The Doors are the hipster version of The Beatles.

Seeing them live changed my whole opinion of the band. Super tight for a 7 piece band. Definitely not the best psych group out, but their live show outdoes their studio work by a lot.

King Gizz is the best psych band that's been around for a while, since Tame Impala and MGMT have had their time already. Bands like Wand, White Fence and Brian Jonestown have no chance competing since they mostly make generic classic psych stuff which is always boring and lazy. Gizz started as surf, by the third record they did a total switch concept-wise and they have done it each album, which is a lot to say considering they have put out 10 records in their 5 years of existence. If anyone could have a chance for the best psych award would be Thee Oh Sees, Morgan Delt or Ty Segall

Its revivalist because it attempts to capture the sound of the original scene aesthetically but ignores the advances that the genre has made and split off into since the early seventies. It doesnt genuinely present a psychedelic experience by taking a droney garage rock riff and play it for much longer than it can have any charm, throwing in some harmonica solos and bullshit along the way. It sounds like a music festival full of rich kids taking drugs, obsessing over social media and generally doing anything besides listening to the music. Maybe im just bitter about music being a fashion statemennt but a genre named after the insight and exploration of the human mind should be known for more than some car commercial indie rawk

I don't know what you're talking about, there's always been this flavor of psych rock available. This is one of those genres where there's a couple different varieties that still fit in the genre. Like you could sound closer to the Beatles, or Hendrix, or Floyd and still be called psychidelic.

Even then you can't say psych ever really died, in the 80's you got Spaceman 3, and the 90's you got stuff like Elephant 6 and Brian Jonestown Massacre, and outside of new effects, production techniques, and songwriting techniques, the genre really hasn't progressed that much at all since the seventies. Unless you're referring to neo-psych, which is a somewhat newer thing.
