maybe like lets say 5 years ago debuting a purepop group was a good idea, so you start looking for purepop looking trainees... and then training period begins
fast forward 5 years (which isnt an unusual training period) now you have a bunch of more or less well trained trainees with their purepop faces and purepop attitude ready to debut and have the choice to either let them just go as a malinvestment or dumb them on this oversaturated market with the hope they will somehow make profit for damage control

The impression I got is companies just recruit trainees before coming up with a concept later, then select from whichever girls they have around for it. That's why the kids are so anxious about whether they'll debut. Purepop groups tend to have the youngest idols so companies can churn those out without much training investment, possibly why they're so common. But really it must simply be a lack of inspiration.

this is one of the things that allowed twice to be so big and most people on kpg ignore. it's incredibly easy to project a personality onto the girls because they always have the same roles in the m/v's (an example being sana as the quirky but cute and sexy girl), not to mention all the vlives. i hardly ever see this in most kpop mv where they all just act cutesy.
