>Your breakdown of pop music's fundamental elements aren't wrong but are only one piece of the puzzle.
Absolutely.

>Grimes is certainly more adventurous than mainstream pop artists (Taylor Swift, Katy Perry) but nearly all of Grimes' songs are very poppy.
Never said otherwise.

>Most Grimes songs have an infinitely looping chord progression running through most sections (unlike classical).
First of all, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passacaglia
Quoting myself from long ago:
>>In small-ensemble situations (typified by the jazz and classical chamber groups) sonic interest is principally achieved through variations in scale, chord progression, time signature, and tempo (aspects known as the horizontal axis elements of music in music theory circles - since they're rendered horizontally in standard music notation) rather than through variations in sonic texture and timbre.
>>
>>In contrast to this, large ensemble situations (typified by layered/sample based music - ala Grimes - and classical orchestra/organ music) the opposite is true. Sonic interest is primarily achieved through variations of sonic texture and timbre (aspects known as the vertical axis elements of music in music theory - since they rendered vertically standard music notation) brought about by combining individual samples/instruments together in constantly changing configurations, while leaving the horizontal axis elements relatively untouched.

[1/2]
>>
>>72746794
[2/2]

>>
>>One of the best classical examples of this latter method is Bach's Passacaglia in C Minor (originally written for organ, but transcribed here beautifully imo for full orchestra https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAIT02mB9lo) Notice how, despite its extended running time and constantly variating sound, the horizontal axis elements described earlier are very simply defined and NEVER change (the entire song's chord progression consists of the same 4 chords repeated ad nauseum.)
>>
>>This is the sort of context in which the complexity of Grimes' music (especially regarding her earlier stuff) is based; constant, conscious variations in sound quality rather than formal structure.
>>
>Most Grimes songs are verse-chorus-verse (unlike classical). In fact, they're nearly always close to verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus. Sometimes with intros, outros, and pre-choruses, sometimes extended a bit in her longer songs, but still pretty much following the pop "macro structure" formula.
Which is exactly my point - Grimes makes music that - structurally speaking - from a MACRO level is thoroughly contemporary pop, but on a MICRO level is distinctly classical.
Hence why it's game-changing.

>>
>>72751755
Really didn't care for it
It's not trash but it was pretty disappointing for me.
It goes really hard on the jpop/kpop aesthetic and her vocals are super drab and one dimensional.
Wish she focused on production and made a project with some decent vocalists.
When I saw her live she was wildly outshone by Hana, the girl who opened for her.
>>
>>72751826
>she was wildly outshone by Hana
I think you were the only one in that crowd that believed that. Hana is nice but she doesn't have the star power of Grimes. And her good tunes. I bet you were blinded by her beauty...

>It goes really hard on the jpop/kpop aesthetic and her vocals are super drab and one dimensional.
You're overstating that jpop/kpop aesthetic. Only a handful of songs have that (Kill V. Maim, World Princess Part II, Venus Fly). Anything else doesn't have anything to do with jpop/kpop.
>>
>>72752041
Talking about vocals not songs.
Hana is a better vocalist hands down
I still preferred Grimes' set more but she's not a good singer.
>>
>>72752410
>Hana is a better vocalist hands down
She's not. Listen to her singing backing vocals at Coachella on the song Butterfly...
>>
>>72752410
>Hana is a better vocalist hands down
Training wise - definitely, but I wouldn't go beyond that. Grimes has one of the most timbrally flexible voices I've ever heard.

>>
I listened to Grimes for the first time last night - Art Angels and Halfaxa

I liked Halfaxa better
>>
>>72754557
Not bad, although it sounds more like a Yoko Kanno (one of Grimes' stated influences) track to my ear. E.g. https://youtu.be/CBu9jUZMj-E
It's also not dance music.
>>
>>72754557
>Grimes originality btfo
Not so quickly. Saint Etienne fan here. That song doesn't really sound like Grimes. None of them even invented those "oooohs".
>>
>>72754802
Try Visions next. IMO it's her masterpiece; halfway between Halfaxa and Art Angels regarding style.
>>
>>72755705

>>
>>72757421
> Name 1 (one) girl like her. Go ahead.
im not going to because "likeness" is subjective and you've already decided internally that she is completely unique so even if i did post a girl who i perceived to be "like her" you would say that she isnt.

It's funny you say that because I feel the exact opposite. Every Hana song I've heard sounds extremely generic and boring. She's a decent singer but everything else is just so meh.

I had a bit of a fixation for her early on in my discovery of her music. It's fading away now. But it was intense for a while. Doesn't mean I'm in love with her. I think i've written to you in previous threads. I hope you find Love anon. Nah, she's somewhat of a control freak. I do that sometimes. Maybe she just wants to make her own thing and not have a bunch of people come in and take her creation from her and bastardize it to the point of being unrecognizable like most shit out there.

Eg. Band X is super gud at what they do. A bunch of record execs sign them to a contract. A few years pass and then suddenly they change everything because captain dipshit record exec thinks they should be the way the industry is going, not who they are.

Oh Anon, you poor dear...

>They are an item. They're solid.
>What makes you think that?
Look at his social media pictures with her in them. When they are together. They're happy together. You can see that look in her eyes and in his eyes. Maybe they won't always be solid seeming... but it's a rare thing for people to be together so long with no purpose.

>She wouldn't be with him if they weren't good together.
>She is with him because he cooks food and is useful in general.
I doubt she'd choose to be with someone simply because they can make food. A lot of men, including myself, can make food. But I don't stand any greater a chance of being with her. I'm actually curious how they met. Anyone know?

>You don't know her.
>You don't know her.

You are very right, Anon. I do not. I have read a hell of a lot about her, and her interviews and what not. I've farted around on her social media stuff. I have a general idea of her. But you know one thing i've picked up on, she and that James guy are an item.

I'm curious what he does for a living? Seems to tag along with her but i've never understood how he tags along with her all over the world? Is he part of the production somehow? Worked into the staff I guess?

I know you hurt Anon, but I think you need to get this out of you before it consumes you. I've been there about other girls I knew. Pining away like a dumbass, wasting my time.

You should try a real relationship before you waste any more of your time. Being with a woman is nothing like pining for one. Pining is a disease that consumes the mind, then the heart, and then the soul. I don't know where you are in this battle anon. But I hope you'll listen to reason.

If she spoke with us, maybe she'd have to then speak with millions of her other fans and she'd never have time for anything else.

We care about her don't we? We want her to be happy. And she IS happy. Look at her social with Hana and whomever she's with. She's smiling a lot. Isn't that what we want? Don't you want HER to feel good?

how can i accept an imperfect world that i cannot change??
>>
>>72767997
We are all born of imperfection. Even Claire. Our only trick that has kept all life alive for billions of years is that we can EVOLVE. That is why we are not a void of darkness and nothing. But simply potential.

Accept that we are imperfect, that perfection is a man made concept and construct. It does not exist because it is subjective. You think she is perfect? She gets the shits sometimes, maybe she gets sick, maybe she fucks up her lyrics... to her own songs. You see we've all got flaws.

To chase perfection or to idealize anyone or anything in this universe as such is to ignore the long journey that all of the matter has come from and for which we are all here. Remember, we stand upon a fabric of space and time that has been carrying on for billions of years.

Perfection is an illusion. Nothing more.

>>
>>72768042
nice try chomskyte, but the first part is even more delusional than the second. I can experience my desire for Claire, but I can't grasp infinite time flow and geneworks, which is naturally just a pile of bullshit.

And perfection is just a maxima, It doesn't mean that I need just to accept all the injustice in the world just because ultimate justice is not acceptable.

that didn't leave me satisfied, but maybe it's one of those things you just have to come to terms with
i like to think that we're gods or maybe just souls that came to live here just to suffer, and to experience believing we're mortal. then we go back to a perfect experience til we want to suffer again. but that's just a happy thought, and i wonder if i can believe in it one day

thx 4 your answer, have a young grim
>>
>>72768087

Perhaps I should clarify. We exist only because others have died. Other models of creature have existed, evolved, passed on their progeny and died. So we could live. We are an extant model that is still yet imperfect. We are growing, evolving, mutating. All the time. There can never be anything remotely resembling perfection.

As for Justice, Justice is the backbone of society. It is another man made construct and concept. It is not real. Justice is intangible.
>>
>>72768091
You know what I like to think about sometimes? Magic. All that superstitious bullshit. It makes certain possibilities appear more real. It's, of course, purely nonsense because none of it is provable. None of it has any founding in science or logic. But it's fun to think about.

Even more, what's fun (but also dangerous) to think about is multi-verse theories. That there are endless permutations of our universe where maybe you're with her in one of them. Maybe in one of them I am with her. And so on there is one where neither of us are and she is with James, like as in this one.

My point is that reality is a bitch sometimes. Life is brutal sometimes. But existence in this universe, by extension is and always has been chaotic. Nothing is certain, timeless or endless in nature. A sun can shine for a billion years but burn out just the same. We get maybe a hundred years to burn as bright as we can and then we'll be part of the cosmos again.

I just mean maybe it's better not to waste what little time we have on this planet pining for people we can't be with. Don't you think the thought has crossed my mind to be with her too?

my question wasn't related to grimes, though!
science takes believing too, but it seems you have your mind made up on it already. besides, i also believe in most of science for now, i just have an open mind for other things as cliche as it sounds

have another grimz, maybe one day you'll stop thinking about her? not trying to portray you as obsessed or something like that, don't get me wrong. but things like this can also be used for inspiration, just don't say your music is inspired in >tfw no grimz gf if you ever get famous, lol
much much love to you!
>>
>>72768112
>We are an extant model that is still yet imperfect
bretty sure evolution isn't driven by strive of perfection and the next kin could be worse than previous one and eventually all just dies.
And furthermore whenever someone refers as perfect I imagine they never have considering it from evolution standpoint.

everything is man made and without man it is irrelevant.
>>
>>72768216
Well, perhaps i'm just not good at describing what I mean lol.

Take a Cheetah on the african savanna. It has evolved through countless iterations of different sub-species to get to where it is. Capable of running down an animal and chasing your car down the highway. Unbelievable achievement, from an evolutionary perspective.

Now Claire, she's evolved too, like we are here talking to each other over this network. Anons, evolved to exchange ideas through squiggly lines on a screen.

Well Claire isn't perfect. You asked me to convince you to accept an imperfect world you cannot change. I am giving you this world that we have and everything in it, all in an imperfect universe. Claire is in this imperfect universe too. And she, too, is imperfect. However, Anon, her imperfections also make her unique and likeable. That lisp, that tooth, for example. But we like those things about her. What if she had no lisp, and her teeth were perfect and her nose was like every other person out there? That wouldn't be nearly as interesting!
>>
>>72767261
To the best of my knowledge, the lowest she can go is D3 (the D below middle C) as heard in the song Symphonia IX. Live, she can down to at least F#3, as heard in this recording of Heartbeats https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Ci0tAdP7NY

As far as high notes are concerned, Grimes is what is classically known as a coloratura soprano acuto sfogato, which literally means a high soprano voice with such a large upper range that it might as well have no limit at all. Her highest note on record is a Bb6 in the song Circumambient, but live she has routinely gone higher. You can clearly hear her singing a B6 in the song Go at the 3:50 mark here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uorp0uUuKPU and performances of Scream like this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjj1qgmZxXk have her in the realm of a C#7.

F#3 - B6 (her absolutely confirmed live vocal range) puts her just one tone shy of a 4.5 octave range. Whereas D3 - C#7 (the more tenuous limits described above) puts her just one semi-tone shy of a full 5 octaves. So basically somewhere between a 4.5 and 5-octave range.

Like I said here >>72753357 - one of the most timbrally flexible (independent of training) voices I've ever heard.

Perfect does not exist and the concept itself is fundamentally flawed. Almost to the point of being some sort of oxymoron.

If you want to debate semantics why don't just use dictionary?

Definition of perfect
1
a : being entirely without fault or defect : flawless a perfect diamond
b : satisfying all requirements : accurate
c : corresponding to an ideal standard or abstract concept a perfect gentleman
d : faithfully reproducing the original; specifically : letter-perfect
e : legally valid
>>
>>72768391
Those must have been some lessons! wow!
>>
>>72768403
Oh I think we've gone and thrown this whole subject off a cliff now. I was merely trying to get to the heart of your fixation, like mine, revolving around what appeared to me to be your putting her on a bit of a pedestal. When she is, merely, in fact, human like the rest of us (albeit very talented).
>>
>>72768419
I put my emotions on the pedestal. That is what makes us humans instead of gene memers.
>>
>>72768456
don't you think animals have emotions too?
>>
>>72768513
there is no scientific consensus, but other species besides primates lack consciousness and people who advocate animal emotionality usually mix emotions with feelings.

>Emotion is any relatively brief conscious experience characterized by intense mental activity and a high degree of pleasure or displeasure
>>

it is a mix of dignity and idealism, it is what caused you to "evolve" from stone age cavemen to a modern man without much change in genetic code. Imagine you are living in a cave instead of house and you are completely content with it because house doesn't exist and cave is here and real.
