Please, no meme answers;

I've been invited to craft a lead line for a friend's song where he's already written the lyrics, chord changes, and bpm. I've got a copy of his studio recording and have only ever done rhythm guitar. I want to use this as an opportunity to get into lead, but have lost on where to start. So far I've just been hitting the root notes higher up the neck but don't know where to progress from there. I've tried to follow a walking bassline pattern, but with the higher notes. It sounds ok, but I feel I shouldn't use it for every time I play.

Please advise, thank you.
>>

>>72744038
I know just what the song needs: You should just chug in an articulate manner, paying close attention to dynamics
>>

Seems rather complicated.
I think that was recorded on a Schecter Tosin Abasi 10 string I suggest transcribing it slowly a bar at a time.

>>72744038
Step one before any of this is learning scales.
If you haven't done that much, you're fucked.
If you have bothered to learn your major/minor, just follow those scales and hit some notes in them.
That you don't even have a clue though is not a good sign for being able to come up with anything worthwhile. Some people are just meant to be rhythm players, though (e.g. Neil Young).
There ya go, do a Neil Young solo.

same fag from a couple of threads ago who is looking to get something similar to Al Cisneros' tone on his bass.

so I'm settled on either
>a DOD 250 reissue
or
>an EQD White Light
wat do?
help me choose one... pick uno. I'm clueless when it comes to pedals.
>>
>>72745014
I have the 250 RI, its nice but had higher gain levels its kind of scrambly. I like it around 11 to 1 oclock on the gain knob
>>
>>72745014
>Al Cisneros
He uses this
https://www.mountainkingelectronics.com/megalith

and a DOD 250. The reissues are pretty faithful to the original and will save you a helluva lot of money.

Poorfag set-up: Used 250 reissue, used big muff. You'll get close enough.
>>72745042
I feel the exact same. I rarely ever bring mine later than noon. It usually stays around 10 or 10:30 to get a really nice, warm tube-sounding OD, on my bass anyway. Anything past that and it's just muddy grind, which feels weird saying.

thanks for the speedy comments guys

yea cool I'll go with the 250 ri then, it'll be a lot cheaper

only interested with the White Light cause it came with compression and pedalsandeffects.com were raving about it (another Juan shilling EQD episode) and stephen o'mallet of Sunn o))) has one too... was going to flip the pedal to my guitarist if i didn't like

>its nice but had higher gain levels its kind of scramble
yea I've read that and you can tell the low end loss at those higher gain levels might just slap a boss line selector to retain that low end

and also read that it sounds better with tube amps

>>72745100
yea holy shit the megalith it always tits i hear it more on Shrinebuilder than on OM or Sleep on Sleep it sounds to me his driving his distortion hard to the point it almost sounds like a fuzz

I've read conflicting shit about how the 250 is stock or he's had it modded but whatever i'm going the poorfag set up lol
>Poorfag set-up: Used 250 reissue, used big muff. You'll get close enough.
i literally have the bass big muff already and it has two outputs to split the signal which will come in handy to have my highs distorted and my lows clean but with that punchy overdrive

by the way i have a dod 410 that'll have in there to boost that signal chain

I never really noticed any cut in the low end on my shitty peavey combo or Bassman. It might just depend on the guitar pickups

>>
>>72747093
Yeah, supposedly you get mega bass from a 10 inch speaker cause it has to moves in and out less or some horrible bullshit like that. I just know I bought an GK 4x10 ultralight cab at 4 ohms for easy transportation and it works well with bass, standard and drop tune guitars and even my synth. I think if you can find a way to lift the cab off the ground/stage to waist level it would make more a greater impact.
>>
>>72747175
wow Im drunk. Just try before you buy if possible
>>
Fucking finally able to buy an amp, just have it down to a few options. I could get a twin reverb, JC-120, or an Ampeg SS140 half stack. The latter two are the cheaper options, so I might be able to swing a guitar from a friend too. Wanna go for shoegaze/postrock/noise pop. I'm going to gc tomorrow to try the twin and jc, but it's a bit of a drive for me so I wanted to ask here first
>>
>>72747603
figure out how loud you need to be. live gigging vs home wanking. Tubes are always great sounding, but something like a twin only has one channel and only gets dirty to a point the louder it gets. A jazz chorus is totally clean, is loud, but heavy as fuck. Anything half stack maybe too much. Are you using pedals for dirt/fuzz? again this really depends on what style your going to use it for
>>

looks like a regular preamp though, cant i plug the amps output to a preamp or focusrite or fasttrack
>>
>>72751261
There are options depending on how much you want to spend. Just do your homework and shop around. Recording audio is like playing the guitar, you get better through actively doing it as well as studying the method. If you're just starting out get an entry level DI and fug around with amp simulation.

Sup guitar players. I've been playing a while now, and finally feel confident enough to upgrade my axe, as right now I'm just playing a shitty squire with a bowed neck.

I have ~$400-600 to spend. I play mostly prog rock, jazz, and psychedelic rock. I'm stuck between getting this:

http://shop.phredinstruments.com/dockstar-koa

or a standard MIM strat.

I really like that hollow body, and it's one of the most beautiful guitars I've seen. But it's quite a bit of money, and a MIM strat is a safe bet. Thoughts?

I recently just got a gig as a bassist in a local band. It's pretty mellow band but they want the bass to be able to drive and play clean. I got a fantastic deal on a used fender bass and i love it and got it set up but I'm clueless as to what amp I should be looking at. I'm fine with a combo or getting an amp head and cab separate. My limit is probably around $600. Any recommendations?
For reference, the band sounds like a mix of Young the Giant, post-hxc, and emo with a lot of ambiance.
I've looked at a fender rumble and a peavey and quilter so far. wattage of at least 250 preferred. pick is the model of bass I got. Bless Fender.

if it's going to be some mellow, indie/ambient type shit. any combo amp with a 2x12 should work just fine, especially if its a small gig type of deal where you'll most likely be mic'd up with the rest of the band. and look for amps with at least 100w. now i'm not saying the 100w 2x12 is all you need, you could always go bigger and add more speakers

i would only recommend an amp and cab set if you plan on swapping cabs/amp heads constantly for experiments or if you wanna add more speakers (like any good bassist should) for bigger venues/performances where you won't be mic'd to a PA system
>>
>>72754509
thanks man! I figured a 2x12 would be a bit more efficient. I was looking at MarkBass ampheads and whatnot, but I just can't justify using one of those on a ghetto cab. I figure 200-300 watts on a 2x12 combo should be decent. Any real brand recs? I've heard Peavey is a good way to go because the used market is killer for them and they put out some decent equipment. My guitar amp is a 2x12 valveking and it's pretty nice, as well.

What's the physical differences between a steel string and a nylon string guitar? Build wise.

I've found two old guitars while cleaning up, both had nylon strings attached, but I suspect one might be a steel string based on how it looks. Neck seems thinner, headstock is missing the slots most nylon strings I've previously played have, it had a pick guard, and the bridge had the plugs to fit strings in instead of feeding them through the bridge and tying it up. To me, that seems like a steel string, but I'm not sure if the nylon strings were on it because the previous owners didn't know shit about guitars and just assumed it was nylon strings, or it's just a nylon string design that I wasn't familiar with
>>
>>72754907
i really like the way the ds1 sounds with everything maxed. does this make me retarded?
>>
>>72755014
steel string guitars have a shitload added to reinforce the extra strain on the neck due to the metal strings - namely a truss rod and bracing inside the guitar. you can put nylons on a steel string but not vice versa
>>
>>72755043
How would you find that out without cracking the neck open and seeing if there's a truss rod in there?
>>
>>72754907
shit nigga, idk. i'm not rich enough to buy and trade different brands of pedals. i did fall in love with the ocd by fulltone. i regret selling it for quick cash. and the eqd levitation pedal, it worked for me.

I was so excited I forgot to post an actual picture yesterday. Played for 9 hours, going for another 9 today.
This thing is so comfy, it just needs to have the frets sanded because some of them are a little sharp.
>>
>>72756930
so what?
>>

No idea. But you can run through the warmoth builder and get a computer generated approximation(for standard tele and strat bodies). I was trying the estimate the cost of a warmoth build and i remember those options being available.
>>
>>72756930
You say washburn, i say washed up
>>
>>72756930

At the edges? Noooo, don't use sandpaper, you can't get accurate enough and it's way too slow. Use a needle file. And cover everything in painters tape if you're not experienced with files. If you don't have either of those go to your local big box and you can get em both for under $20. It's an easy job, probably about 2 hours max to do it right if you've never done it.

Just make sure you don't touch the crown, that takes more time to get right and if you take off enough up top they might need to be releveled.
>>
>>72757277
>At the edges? Noooo, don't use sandpaper
What I meant is that it needs to get that fixed, I know if I use sandpaper I'll completely fuck up the finish.

it has to be the same type of bridge first of all. maybe so long as the dimensions are the same you could.
or you could put them in the bridge it was designed for.

>>72758058

>>
>>72758262
It's a fun exercise, you get to choose your own fingerings for everything unlike when you're learning from tabs someone else wrote etc.
Say the melody is g bent to a, then add the c over it. You could play that by bending the g string at the 12th fret with your ring finger, then adding the pinky on the b string in the 13th fret. However, if you like index finger bends like BB King does them, you might opt for bending the b string at the 8th fret, then adding the c from the high e string with the same finger (barring over two strings bending one of them). With tabs these things might not occur to you, which can sometimes make things difficult if the person who transcribed the song is a retard.
Also that sense of accomplishment.
>>

>>
>>72758579

>>72758024
There's at least two types of Strat saddles, the earlier offset ones in your pic will only fit a bridge drilled for those offset screws. If you can get the non-offset ones then they should fit other similar bridges, providing the string spacing is correct.
>>
>>72758753
Is that really necessary? I just play for fun really - I want it to sound nice, but there's no need for it to be professional standard. My first guitar only cost £40 and, though I'm ready for an upgrade now, the sound was definitely ok for my needs.

Too good to be true, neck pickup wasn't working, so they are repairing it now.

I just want to play guitar good ._.

And how could you use an allen key to prevent your guitar from getting fucked up when changing tunings?
>>
>>72759336
The allen key is a special key, if you play in it it doesn't matter what tuning you're in. It's the best key, followed by D minor and then B major.

I just got an iron cobra 900 for like $60 through them(new $200). Pictures online looked great. I cringed when I saw it in the store. It's dirtier than a motherfuckers and some parts are rusted to shit. Only half of the beater felt is left. Works fine though, and everything bad can be cleaned or replaced.

Did you have to pay them to fix it?

what you need is an allen's wrench m8e

how is fun like
>>

Floyd rose brother. Or some other locking trem. I'm assuming at least. Changing one string changes tension on all strings.

I honestly don't even bother changing tuning in a gig anymore, i just get another guitar. Even if it's a piece of shit, it's just one song in most cases. I wish i had roadies and a tech :c
>>
>>72759558
Perfectly fine if you want to play clean, or all your distortion / OD / fuzz comes from pedals.
>>
>>72759558
If it's a london reverb you get a dozen upvotes
>>
>>72759624
This, honestly. Fender ss amps are pretty solid for clean playing. Pristine, and kinda cold and sterile in a good way. I have never not had at least 1 in the last 15 years. Unless they're talking about the starter pack amps, fuck that shit.

no, i live in an apartment with paper thin walls. ill get a mustang or something weedy
>>
>>72759564
But how do I use it to not harm my guitar when changing tuning?
>>72759598
How does a Floyd rose help?
>>
>>72759950
that's easy, just smash your guitar into the floor after every performance, and you won't even have to worry about it!

Just bought a Gibson SG with 2 mini humbuckers. Rate hate debate.

I'll buy my first expensive guitar (1000-1200 Euros) in a couple of months. What guitar would you recommend?
I play a lot of Blues and Rock and I also want to get into Jazz.
This might be a bit unrealistic but I also want to be able to play some of the metal riffs (mostly Metallica and Black Sabbath) I used to play back in high school.
I was thinking maybe a Jazzmaster? That's also the one that looks best to me.

I just swallowed my own feminine penis, kill me like you ape it no RE-captch-aaa required

Jazzmaster is going to be pretty bright for jazzy stuff despite the name. My jazzmaster also doesn't sound as good under heavy distortion as my tele.

In fact, the tele is probably more what you're looking for. The neck pickup is fantastic for a warm, jazzy tone. and the bridge pickup is fantastic for heavier music. That'd be my recommendation. I'd do some more research if I were you though.
>>
>>72761845
Thanks, I was definitely going to look at some Telecasters as well, unfortunately I just don't like the look of the Telecasters shape.
Are you happy with your Jazzmaster though?
>>
>>72761734
make another post about it, maybe someone will wipe your ass then

>tfw when you look to the side and remember you didn't sand your guitar's neck joint as much as you want and will have to work on it again

fucking normies

Fuck no, would have just returned it in that case. Got an Epiphone Riviera R93 with the fitted hard case for 399.

Other than the pickup and the missing switch cover it is in excelent condition, so once that is fixed I'll be happy.

It will be my second guitar, I've had one of the "Lotus" knockoff Strats since 2001 but only recently started putting effort into practice.
