Nu metal was a temporal niche that capitalized on the rising popularity of both hip-hop and "alternative". It was sufficiently different from the post-grunge homogeneity to distinguish itself as something different from alternative, cultivate a subculture, which ultimately took pieces from the stated genre subcultures it cannibalized. It was able to provide a "mainstream but alternative" genre for disaffected youth, and therefore greatly profited both monetarily and popularity-wise in comparison to other metal genres, making it more accessible and less weighed down with the controversy certain other roughly contemporary genres had accrued.

Ultimately, nu metal was a type of music showcased on TRL. That should speak volumes to how "alternative" (and to its quality how good) it was. However, it was still a steep upgrade to the blend of nu metal and post-grunge that defined the years after its heyday, which were even more grossly absent a sense of actual identity, and even more so obvious in their attempts at seizing a valuable niche market.
