this, most indie rock bands are like this, where they only get airplay on college/non-commerical radio and AAA (and maybe a tad on alternative radio), but the albums always end up in the Top 40 of the Billboard album charts

This is a very loose list. I would consider a number of these acts huge successes. The Buggles are true one hit wonders because they only had their one huge hit and were quickly irrelevant, but groups like ELP were playing huge stadiums for years long after Lucky Man was a hit.

And can anyone explain what Metheny's "one-hit" would be? Last Train Home? Are You Going With Me? Phase Dance? This list starts off decent but has a lot of bullshit on it, especially towards the end.

You could say the same about Oasis who technically had about 5 would-be Top 40 hits in American between 1994 and 1997, but only Wonderwall was released as a commercial CD and cassette single, meaning everything else was ineligible to chart on the Hot 100 even though by 1996, they were playing arenas in America, their videos were in heavy rotation on MTV, they were being played on Top 40 radio, and charting highly on the "Radio songs" and "-pop songs" as well as topping the "mainstream rock" and "modern rock" charts.
