I think it's a disservice to both bands to make them compete. While they both fall into the same genre, the two bands are interested in two very different sounds. There's a reason Loveless, Souvlaki and Nowhere appear as starting points in most rec charts.

Then again, I saw Slowdive live last night, so I'm just as biased as anyone else. Great show, great album.

man i dunno, slowdive's new album kind of grows on me but i have to acknowledge it's nowhere near the band's previous output, it sounds somewhat like beach house desu. as for mbv, i haven't listened to it enough to say i really like it or not

They're both very good but MBV had the better comeback. Meanwhile, they're both better than Lush's (though theirs was arguably smarter) and I'll be damn surprised if Ride's ends up being any sort of upset. Then again, I'm surprised I liked Slowdive as much as I did so I won't rule it out.

i remember when mbv came out i listened to it and was semi-mind blown, it sounded new and different from what i expected a shoegaze album to sound like. slowdive is predictable and boring, like they're imitating the bands they've influenced,

I give Slowdive some credit - I wasn't expecting songs quite as punchy as Don't Ask Why or Everyone Knows, and Falling Ashes is proof that the band didn't completely abandon the Pygmalion style. That said, while I don't think it's bad Star Roving is basically the most generic requisite shoegaze anthem put through a Slowdive filter - new for them, but not exactly in the best way.
