Godly progressive rock albums

Tyranus Ruber- In The Halls of The Red Regent
The godliest
>>72683701
Oh, yes. Here's another great album which is not discussed very often. It's similar to Selling England by the Pound regarding their folk sensibilities.
>>72683744
one of the funnest, least serious prog bands out there
>>72683744
I actually haven't listened to much of Gentle Giant, I'll make sure to look into this one
thread over
>>72683794
This one's better.
>>72683701
One of the godliest, but pic related exists.
>>72683798
It's essential listening. I'd go so far as calling it essential for people who don't care about prog in the slightest. At least for some of the tracks like "Advent of Panurge" or "Think of Me with Kindness."
>>72683798
For some reason, their other albums have been indigestible for me, even though I'm not a stranger to experimental music. I'm definitely planning on a revisiting their discography. I'm sure Octopus will be your instant favorite as it was for me.
>>72683758
Funniest? I've read about that, though I didn't find Octopus funny. On which albums is their humor most present?
>>72683317
You start. Close to the Edge is the embodiment of negative prog stereotypes - shitty word salad lyrics, bloat, wankery, shitty mixing, etc.
Here's one of the most beautifully realized concept albums. Listen to the remastered version and let the album leave you in awe.
>>72683880
Giant for a Day is probably their happiest sounding. In a Glasshouse and Octopus are also pretty happy sounding I find
>>72683317
*posts better Yes album*
*retreats back into the shadows*
In the honor of the late Allan Holdsworth and John Wetton. An absolute classic.

Any more great Canterbury scene albums? What about Hatfield and the North? Has anyone listened to them? I've heard only good things about them.

He meant 'most fun,' he just doesn't understand english.
>>72683758
The occasional shriek from Derek Shulman can be pretty amusing, but if you want straight up comedy prog, look no further.

>>72684358
I'm not implying anything. And I'm also planning on revisiting this album today, because it didn't do much for me the first time. At least the weather here fits the bleak atmosphere of this album.
>>72684353
Hey man, I gave it a shot.
On the more aggressive side of prog. Any Zappa fans would like to hear this.

I know Zappa is popular to hate here. I can't covince you otherwise, though I'm not sure what exactly are you trying to accomplish here.

>>72683730

The only flaw in the album for me is the first song being really weak compared to the others.

>>72686772
subgenres are pretty subjective as it is but all the traits of those genres overlap. early prog was literally psychedelic rock called something different in the first place
>>72684358
I just revisited this album and even though I would still consider it incosistent, the shrieking tenor sax on Alifie sounds like it hurts the person playing and it sounds like stabbing someone. Little Red Robin Hood Hit the Road (the last song) is beautiful, demented, but catchy in some way. His vocal style is really something else. I look forward to listening to his discography now.
>>72683701
One of my favorites
Also this
Absolutely love this album
>>72683744
>>72683806
How do these compare to the s/t. I thought it was ok but it didn't really make me want to listen to the rest of the discog
>>72685602
This is a great one. Peter Gabriel Genesis is the best Genesis.
>>72687481
Goat. I heard one song on this album and then bought it off that whim while at a record store with my buddy, best whim ever
>>72687541
>How do these compare to the s/t
I'm the one who posted Octopus. In comparison to Octopus, their self titled is quite weak. I mentioned that I couldn't stomach their albums past Octopus and even Free Hand and Acquiring the Taste, so I'm not a good judge of those, until I revisit them.
>>72684358

>>72687712

>>72683730

>>72687892
P A T R I C I A N
Foxtrot is overrated and boring, Nursery Cryme really is the best Genesis album
>>72687712
>>72687763
I love the first track up until it gets boring with the five or so minutes of solitary violin noodling. Makes me want to fall asleep, and I say that as a violinist who loves Cross's playing. That said, the six or so minutes at the beginning? Pure genius. I also love Book of Saturday and Exiles for the mystique and intrigue of Wetton's vocals, the haunting Mellotron, and that backmasked violin (very nice touch).
I'd rank the tracks:
>Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Part I
>The Talking Drum
>Exiles
>Book of Saturday
>Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Part II
>Easy Money
Beep beep get thee fuck f the way
>>72688048
>>72687541
Acquiring the Taste has more and better guitar riffs than s/t, the bass is also fucking ripping. there's also far less wankery in general imo.
does /mu/ consider kate bush prog?
Does this count as proggresive? I'm kind of new in proggresive rock and only heard Close To The Edge, The Dark Side Of The Moon and In The Court of The Crimson King
>>72688411
Light prog, but yes, I certainly do.
>>72688906
Well, if we're comparing it to those other three, absolutely not. Leave It is progressive by the standards of 90125, and that's still a brief (for Yes standards) new wave track.

The first 3 minutes of Heart of the Sunrise is undoubtedly the best damn thing Yes has ever done in their entire career.

> King Crimson is the gold standard for prog
>Hocus Pocus by Focus is the Great Grandad of prog songs
>Robert Wyatt should have a statue in his hnor in every city with a population over 50,000 in the entire world
>Adrian Belew was the master for 20 years
>Graham Coxon of Blur is the 2nd best prog guitarist of the 1990's, after Bernard Butler of Suede
>Mars Volta was the last truly prog band and I loved their latin influences.

What is the definition of progressive here? I feel like art-rock and prog-rock are both on a continuum. Prog rock cares much more about instrumental virtuosity, while art rock focuses more on the non-linear song structure.
Either way, I'd call Shudder to Think a prog/art punk band, with a 90s alternative rock flavor.
All genre is a continuum.

Only just listened to this album for the first time 2 days ago and I've already gone through it about 12 times, it has that much power.
If I listen to one song I can't stop there, I have to go through the entire thing (although I'm starting to get to the point where I sometimes just skip 'Money', a bit too dadrock-ey for my taste).

It was always that prog adopted the energy and performance aspects of rock, but eschewed its blues roots (Greg Lake explains this very well in various interviews). Sadly, lately people have started taking the likes of Christgau seriously and started using the term synonymously with art rock, so that quite blatantly not-prog things like Pink Floyd can be included.

The best Faust album by far. And it's a compilation album for crying out loud, full of songs they never meant to release. Not to mention that songs flow into each other perfectly. If you were disappointed with Faust, like I was with their studio albums, listen to this and be done with them. It's a shame really for such a creative band.

"It is our goal to expand the frontiers of contemporary popular music at the risk of being very unpopular. We have recorded each composition with the one thought - that it should be unique, adventurous and fascinating. It has taken every shred of our combined musical and technical knowledge to achieve this. From the outset we have abandoned all preconceived thoughts of blatant commercialism. Instead we hope to give you something far more substantial and fulfilling. All you need to do is sit back, and acquire the taste."
Normies are the mouth, Gentle Giant (or maybe just prog rock in general) is the peach-ass.

Thanks. From a very quick oversight it looks like either someone couldn't handle the banter, or someone overinterpreted things. Will read it carefully later. Independent of the final outcome, it confused me that some people suddenly claim not to like certain music anymore because the musician does not share their views.

How can you think SEbtP is better than this
>>72705475
Not a huge fan but I'd imagine SEbtP is a more complete album whereas Suppers Ready completely overshadows the rest of Foxtrot.
>>72705327
I mean, Vander did literally call Africans and Indians subhuman degenerates in an interview, perform mock Hitler speeches during his drum solos, cover his room in Nazi memorabilia, include a swastika on one of his album covers, and quote the Horst-Wessel-Lied and attribute it to "J.G." (Joseph Goebbels).
Also, I feel that Nazism is something else entirely different from "different views." It is literally predicated on genocide. If you support Nazism, you are inherently in favor of genocide. Not only that, you are in favor of killing those who would stand in your way, including those with different viewpoints. Can't you see how somebody would be at least mildly unsettled by the fact that the musician they are listening to wants them and their ilk dead? However, yeah, when you're talking about liberalism vs. conservatism or whatever, then I do agree that it's kind of stupid to stop listening to the musician solely based off of that. If you're a liberal and the musician is a conservative, it's just differing viewpoints. Neither one wants the other dead, neither advocates genocide.
I do recommend giving that a thorough read. There's quite a few more pages you can read more about if you Google "magma nazi/fascist" without quotation marks.

sup kike
>>72705772
Let's not go there, please.
>>72705729
My point is that the political or other views of the musician cannot change an already existing album. So why not enjoy it if you did before even if the musician is the maddest of madmen? But I understand that certain people might feel uncomfortable.
>>72705071
Be honest. You're the same person whining about this EVERY single time, aren't you?
>>72705954
>But call him a Jew and you will be astonished at how he recoils, how injured he is, how he suddenly shrinks back: “I’ve been found out.”
>>72705772
>>72706279
You're not even replying to the same person, you illiterate fascist.
And, no, I'm not Jewish. I'm just a person who doesn't want to exterminate Jewish people, so that is enough to make me a target of Nazism.
>>72706206
Well, the way I see it, music is very personal. It is essentially the musician speaking to you personally, heart to heart. So imagine you had a good friend, one that confided in you and one that you confided in. And one day he walked up to you and told you he was a Nazi, always had been his entire life. You'd start to see all your previous interactions with him in a far different light knowing that he was bent on exterminating you, your family, and all minorities, would you not?
>>72706531
>would you not?
Since I don't view music and musicians that way, I cannot anwer that to be honest. Apart from that, to be sure what is the true personal view of a musician and what might just be slander from other or sense of humor or whatever, you would need to ask the musician himself.

Fair enough, but you can at least see why others who do feel that way would be turned off from it.
>Apart from that, to be sure what is the true personal view of a musician and what might just be slander from other or sense of humor or whatever, you would need to ask the musician himself.
Fair point. I guess it is a bit hypocritical of me to state that Vander is a fascist based solely on his usage of fascist imagery, as I have in the past defended and enjoyed bands such as Devo, who did also employ fascist imagery, from claims of fascism as pointing out how they were only used as provocative performance art, in a sense. However, I do find that quote about Indians and Africans being "degenerates" to be proof enough that these rumors are, at the very least, partially truthful. Not to mention the interview wherein a musician who had personally worked with Vander.

Chris Squire is amazing, I love this album.
>>72705569
exactly
>>72706806
at last somebody posted it
>>72707009
It's a good prog album but it's not even rock.
Has anyone posted Hatfield North or James Blake's dad's band?
>>72705569
I guess so, but the rest of foxtrot is pretty complete too. Watcher of the Skies, Get Em Out by Friday, Can Utility and the Coastliners and even Horizons are all great songs, idk though I guess I just dont like the long instrumental sections on SEbtP
>>72707103
It's fine. I like both albums but I feel SEbtP has a more complete message to it. Foxtrot is still superb, though.
the labels are wrong but cool albums tho
vote for best genre of prog
