Start with your favorite artists and look into the genre that they belong to. Find related artists on sites like last.fm and RYM. Eventually, if you look up some of those albums, you'll find blogs run by weirdos that no one pays attention to where all they do is peddle obscure releases. You should also try joining a private tracker and using the collage feature, it's really good for looking up new music.

I agree with most of this. Basically I think it's a balance. All of the points on this thread are valid, but honestly my $5/month is worth the convenience of having most of my music on my phone (I travel a lot), my work computer, my iPad (I work in a theater where I have to constantly create playlists for entrance music), and of course my home computer. The ability to connect all of that and not worry about what files are where, and being able to easily share music with my friends and family is well worth the money to me.

At home I have my own fairly large music collection, but I'm still a pleb. Anyone recommend a good player for my homebase?

@everyone in the thread attacking spotify: first off, a big reason people use spotify is cause 90% of the music anyone (even on here) listens to is there, it's SUPER easy. click spotify icon, search song/artist/album/whatever, click play. having to download and find folder certainly increases difficulty a bit. not enough that it should justify using it if it's a vastly inferior service, but most computers run spotify fine and it has pretty much all the music anyone would want. plus a lot of people have moral/ethical issues (that are definitely debatable and complex, not as simply wrong as you are making them out to be) with straight up pirating music. at least w/spotify there's a guarantee some money is going to the artist.

If it wasn't for the mobile app I would have no reason to use spotify. I personally hated using up all my phone storage on music. Since I have an unlimited data plan I can listen to just about anything I want without having to worry about storage space.

Many of you do not realise that not everyone has the time to go through 7 different websites to find obscure music and then download it and play it on their 'super-customizable-low-cpu-usage' player just to save 20€ (or much less if you have friends that can pitch in on the family pack) a month. if an album isn't on spotify these days then i just don't listen to it tb h
i literally have no patience to torrent shit and i don't care about collecting stuff or 'owning' music

i've been meaning to listen to peter gabriel's discography for over 2 years now but since it's not on spotify i just don't bother

it's really just convenience for me

spotify has more weird obscure shit on it than you'd expect. when i find some obscure album and see that i can either stream it right this second, OR wait for the the 130mb album to download off some fuck with 40 kb/s upload speed off soulseek, what do you think i'm going to pick?

but actually i will always pick spotify; if i like the album then i'll go ahead and download it for my collection, if i don't like the album then it's whatever.

i also enjoy throwing random songs that are similar together into a playlist, and then starting a radio station for that playlist. spoonfeeds me certain music i may like when im feeling lazy

Yeah, the client is crap. I design user-interfaces for a living (not in the surface level sense like everyone does) and there really is nothing good about it. It doesn't do anything well nor is it oriented towards one kind of audience, it's just pretentious hipster crap

do people actually pay for the subscription to Spotify? do people actually think people are doing that? you know you can listen for free, right?

is exactly what i listen to and i'm right there with you in my opinion that there's more obscure stuff that i find on spotify than i'd expect. perhaps peoples perspective on the size of spotify's library is largely effected by what sort of music they listen to

I don't remember exactly why I started paying for the service but I think it had something to do with audio quality and the offline mode
