What do people use other than spotify? Or itunes, Google play?
>>
>>72683153
you may not understand this since you only listen to /mu/core but spotify's library size is pathetic. there's also the fact that you don't actually own a single piece of music, the program is 90% bloat, and others prefer lossless files for archival purposes. not to mention you're paying a pittance to artists and that the overwhelming majority of your subscription goes towards spotify itself so what you're doing is actually worse than piracy.

and now the defensive shitposts begin

when did mu start thinking spotify is ok
>>
>>72683322
Because spotify let's you make your own playlists and browse other's playlists. Making playlists and mixtapes and sharing them with others is a special form of creative expression that dates back decades
>>
>>72683400
The exact same thing is covered to a greater extent by collages on private trackers. Or I could just use YouTube and skip the part where I'm paying for a useless, bloated service. Or I could link people to my last.fm scribbles. Or really literally anything else.
>>
>>72683400
>m-my purchase is justified because I can make PLAYLISTS
>surely this is a novel thing that no other program has

>>
You know I'm perfectly ok with people who use Spotify it's not like you're spending my money

But please don't try to argue like it does anything better than any other service because it does not. You can do better for free. Pls stop the keyboard warrior defense of a mediocre service
>>
>>72683390
Why is it not?
>>
>>72683192
Anons will argue against this but the main points
>library size is far from perfect
>the money isn't going towards the artists
>more bloated and less customizable than other players
>no options for bitrate

literally cannot be refuted, only sidestepped. If it cost $0 I wouldn't use it.

Where do you find this obscure music? I want to find interesting and good music that not literally everyone has heard.
>>
the only thing spotify has over local files is convenience, that's about it
>>
>>72683509
Spotify doesn't have super obscure acts therefor it's a bad service.

(Granted there's a few BIG artists missing but I have a backup streaming site for that)
>>
>>72683594
you shouldnt be listening to shitty weirdo hipster music in the first place
>>
>>72683574
Start with your favorite artists and look into the genre that they belong to. Find related artists on sites like last.fm and RYM. Eventually, if you look up some of those albums, you'll find blogs run by weirdos that no one pays attention to where all they do is peddle obscure releases. You should also try joining a private tracker and using the collage feature, it's really good for looking up new music.

Spotify is MUCH easier to use than downloading songs. If there is anything missing from the library I just download it and add it locally.

Plus, Spotify can be used on every device without having to sync or anything.

People complaining about CPU usage must be using laptops from 2003.

100% true. The only reason you should have to pay for Spotify is "it's convenient not to download my music" (which, let's be real, it's only an inconvenience to morons)

I agree with most of this. Basically I think it's a balance. All of the points on this thread are valid, but honestly my $5/month is worth the convenience of having most of my music on my phone (I travel a lot), my work computer, my iPad (I work in a theater where I have to constantly create playlists for entrance music), and of course my home computer. The ability to connect all of that and not worry about what files are where, and being able to easily share music with my friends and family is well worth the money to me.

At home I have my own fairly large music collection, but I'm still a pleb. Anyone recommend a good player for my homebase?

>>72684066

>>
@everyone in the thread attacking spotify: first off, a big reason people use spotify is cause 90% of the music anyone (even on here) listens to is there, it's SUPER easy. click spotify icon, search song/artist/album/whatever, click play. having to download and find folder certainly increases difficulty a bit. not enough that it should justify using it if it's a vastly inferior service, but most computers run spotify fine and it has pretty much all the music anyone would want. plus a lot of people have moral/ethical issues (that are definitely debatable and complex, not as simply wrong as you are making them out to be) with straight up pirating music. at least w/spotify there's a guarantee some money is going to the artist.

it just makes sense. if you're into really obscure stuff, maybe try something else. but there's plenty on spotify (or apple music, or google play, or whatever you use) to satisfy the vast majority of people

@op because nobody wants their spotify or even worse, facebook, found by 4chan

Many of you do not realise that not everyone has the time to go through 7 different websites to find obscure music and then download it and play it on their 'super-customizable-low-cpu-usage' player just to save 20€ (or much less if you have friends that can pitch in on the family pack) a month. Many people listen to music on their phones on the go, and prefer convenience, which is exactly what Spotify offers.

not to mention the fact that slsk isn't even close to the best way to grab albums, but I can already tell you're too computer and music illiterate to understand the benefits of what I'd explain to you
>>
>>72687328
No mobile app. Also flacs take up a lot of storage. I use it on desktop though, but i discover way more music on the go with spotify.
>>
>>72687406

let me guess, redacted or some other private tracker with a retarded interview in order to get in ("it's so easy, just memorize the spectral frequencies of a vinyl record played in reverse on a turntable from the 90s, this totally has relevance to piracy lmao"), and then have to seed three dozen albums eternally or you get kicked out for not maintaining your ratio.

no thanks
>>

You have $30. You spend 10 on two months of Spotify and have 20 left over to spend on merchandise (while $.0004 of that 10 goes to the artist too)

I have $30. I pirate an album for free and buy $30 of merchandise

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

What's wrong with waiting two hours to listen to an album?

It's not like waiting for a piss, or waiting for a meal when you haven't eaten all day.

That is the saddest thing I've read all week.

Pretty decent to be honest, I've found quite a few artists I otherwise would not have.
>>
>>72687460

why do you still feel entitled to free music? honestly it doesn't matter how much merch you buy, if you pirate their music you are still robbing the artist of sales they WOULD have made if you had bought (or legally streamed) the album.

the mental gymnastics that millenials use to justify freeloading is astounding.

Do you seriously think a pirated album is a "robbed sale"? Do you really honestly believe that a download would have been a sale if the download wasn't available? Have you ever researched this subject in your entire life?

Merchandise is much more profitable for a band vs an album sale which will mostly go towards the label and producer. you're revealing yourself to be very uneducated

the "size" of spotify's library is more than you could listen to in a lifetime. maybe range is the word you're looking for
>>
>>72683192
>not to mention you're paying a pittance to artists and that the overwhelming majority of your subscription goes towards spotify itself
also this is not the case. most of the money goes to the labels, and the money artists then get from the labels is determined from their contracts. always find it funny when artists cry about streaming. stop signing with major labels if you don't like being abused. you're still getting fucked over when someone buys an album
>>
>>72683217
If you had a chance to save a fucking great meme only once in your lifetime, would you spare the 2MB for a pristine PNG which you can then compress as much as you want, or would you go for a shitty ass 200kb JPG?
>>
>>72688079
stream the jpg for $10

>>72686224
>dont notice a difference
Just because your hearing is shittier than my grandma's doesn't mean other people can't distinguish two different formats.

My mom sees no fucking difference between Netflix's shitty ass 1080p compressed to fuck movies and my blurays. To her it's all the same.

It's the same for audio. I'm telling you this because I discarded FLAC as an over-exaggeration from the snobs who call themselves audiophiles, but after a few years of "training" my ears with nice equipment and well encoded files, I did an ABX test between lossless and LAME 320mp3 files.
Guess what? I scored 80% correctly out of 25 samples. So I guess I can actually hear a difference, it's minuscule, and it won't show on any track, but it's there.

Here's the test: http://abx.digitalfeed.net/lame.320.html

It's perfectly designed, unline Tidal's or NPR's which both have lag for the WAV file and are not ABX. Here, you have to match the file you're hearing to what they give you as a source, not just guess betwen the two.

Give it a try, listen to the cymbals and sharp vocals.

I don't know about that but not a single one came even close to what.cd's.

Apple's library is much better than Spotify. And some regions are absolute shit on Spotify.

not sure, but as a word of advice libraries are only going to get smaller in the long term as labels work out exclusive deals and the industry generally adapts to streaming

if an album isn't on spotify these days then i just don't listen to it tb h
i literally have no patience to torrent shit and i don't care about collecting stuff or 'owning' music

i've been meaning to listen to peter gabriel's discography for over 2 years now but since it's not on spotify i just don't bother
>>
it's really just convenience for me

spotify has more weird obscure shit on it than you'd expect. when i find some obscure album and see that i can either stream it right this second, OR wait for the the 130mb album to download off some fuck with 40 kb/s upload speed off soulseek, what do you think i'm going to pick?

but actually i will always pick spotify; if i like the album then i'll go ahead and download it for my collection, if i don't like the album then it's whatever.

i also enjoy throwing random songs that are similar together into a playlist, and then starting a radio station for that playlist. spoonfeeds me certain music i may like when im feeling lazy
>>
>>72683192
>spotify's library size is pathetic.
Pathetic by what standards?

I listen to a fair amount of music (like nondescript bleep with 10,000 views on youtube) and a great majority of the time it's available on Spotify

It continues to wow me just how big it is.

>the program is 90% bloat
Yeah, the client is crap. I design user-interfaces for a living (not in the surface level sense like everyone does) and there really is nothing good about it. It doesn't do anything well nor is it oriented towards one kind of audience, it's just pretentious hipster crap
>>
do people actually pay for the subscription to Spotify? do people actually think people are doing that? you know you can listen for free, right?

>>72689361

>nondescript bleep with 10,000 views on youtube
is exactly what i listen to and i'm right there with you in my opinion that there's more obscure stuff that i find on spotify than i'd expect. perhaps peoples perspective on the size of spotify's library is largely effected by what sort of music they listen to
>>
>>72689410
I don't remember exactly why I started paying for the service but I think it had something to do with audio quality and the offline mode
