Silent Hill and Resident Evil games are the only places I've heard dark ambient/instrumental in a way that I can really appreciate it.

I haven't even played the games, just what I have picked up from the soundtracks. They manage to capture that hopelessness and melancholy while the music still sounding pretty in a way.
