RIP /daily/

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Gedo's self-titled debut live album is fun, and you can clearly hear the passion and enjoyment of the performers... but, like a lot of other albums on this list, it's pretty damn generic. The record takes full advantage of the live album format, incorporating cheering and audience interaction very well, while thankfully only lasting for around forty minutes. However, the material they're playing is just pretty standard hard rock, nothing particularly unique. But it's certainly not bad, it's definitely listenable, and it's useful if you want some background noise that you don't have to pay a huge amount of attention to, but isn't just ambient music. That's a pretty backhanded compliment, actually, now that I've actually written it.

my type of bleep through and through. combines really pretty, lo-fi beats with appropriate and catchy samples. a gorgeous record.

>james blackshaw - o true believers

blackshaw's style of primitivism is anything but purist; it sheds the heavy blues influence of fahey for something much less earthly. the playing is constant, emotional, and utterly gorgeous. the songs rarely overstay their welcome or fail to reach their emotional heads. this record doesn't have the modern classical flair of Glass Bead Game, a stylistic difference that ultimately proves benign.

not as good as the original or as RYM would have you believe, but still some great renditions of some great songs. some of them venture into pure cheese, but for the most part it's in good taste.

>versus - the stars are insane
a distinctly 90s indie rock record that bleeds sonic youth and, to a lesser extent, swirlies. the songwriting is consistently solid with some high peaks. seriously, the guitars on this record sound exactly like Daydream Nation-era SY. check it out if that's your scene.

>the factory press - whatever
a good slowcore record. finds itself stumbling into the same type of minor-key melodies. steeped in dreariness.

VERY nice job herb guy. All great albums. Overall score: 4.17

>Can - Tago Mago

I'm VERY surprised I liked this as much as I did. I don't like krautrock, whatsoever. However, this didn't really feel that krautrock-y. I loved how tribal this record sounded, especially the drumming, which was phenomenal, and probably the best part overall. The last three tracks weren't any worse then the first 4, even though the vast opinion is that this album is very top heavy, but I didn't think so. I was debating really hard between a 3.5 and a 4 on this one, but..

Never posted here so not exactly sure if I'm supposed to do something specific or if there's a threadwide list of albums to listen to each day to use.

So, since I haven't listened to a single one of them, I just went and made a chart of the "top /daily/core" (except the last one which I either couldn't make out the name of properly or the chart maker didn't have it) list on your Blogspot.
Just gonna listen to one of those each day (not sure if the owl one is serious or not but I'm going to listen to it anyway I guess lol).

Been lurking here for a while and always wondered: what do the + and - next to an album's rating mean? Is it pretty much saying a 5+ album would translate to roughly a 5.75 and a 5- would be more around 5.25?

I kind of forgot how good this album is. While not Boredoms' best, Chocolate Synthesizer is a fantastic addition to their discography, and a great sendoff to their noise-punk era. Taking a darker, heavier, and more paranoid approach than their previous full-length, Pop Tatari, Eye and crew manage to create some of the best tracks in the band's history. Acid Police, Shock City, Anarchy in the UKK, and Uoredoms are all excellent, with many other highlights and great moments, however. I don't personally enjoy it as much as a Pop Tatari, or as much as most of the output in the band's later period, but I guess it goes to show how good Boredoms are that I can like this album so much while still finding much of their discography to be better.

These connection errors are getting on my nerves

The Devil's Anvil - Hard Rock From the Middle East
>Psychedelic Rock

EXTREMELY gimmicky; this is mostly generic psych rock with an odd Arabic instrument or scale thrown in backed by an Arabic vocalist. It's inoffensive, if somewhat boring, for the most part, but the mix works very well on some tracks (namely, Selim Alai, Besaha and Shisheler).

3.0

Кpacныe Звёзды [Krasnye Zvezdy] - Cмepшeвы пeceнки
>Post-Punk, Punk

Sounds like Grazhdanskaya Oborona, swirly guitars, Letov wannabe vocalist/lyrics and all, but somehow it manages to be less subtle and more trashy. It is slightly New Wave-y (and some songs have a more Kino-like song structure as opposed to a more straightforward punk one) thanks to a prominent synth in the mix. I'm not sure what the Belarus punk subculture was really like but it seems to have been way behind the times when it comes to meme punk.

I know this is on the /daily/core chart that I'm doing, but I feel like it deserves a separate post.. also people would figure out my rating for it before I finished blapp anyway.

>Steve Roach - Structures From Silence

Absolutely transcendent. As my mini shitty rym review that I posted just so I could publicize a new 5/5 says, "Breathtaking... charming... some sort of analogy about the innocence of the universe... This is like a dream." Right at the start, I was in love. I teared up multiple times throughout this first track, the synths are just so warm and dream-like.. It feels like I'm swimming through some sort of sea of pure simplistic bliss, and this ethereal feeling didn't give up once. I was captivated the entire hour, more so then I have been with any ambient record ever. I love this album, thank you blapp.

>The Avalanches - Since I Left You
>Hip Hop, Plunderphonics, Downtempo

I put listening to this aside for a while, even as a huge fan of plunderphonics and sampling. Something about it just rubbed me the wrong way, I guess.

But hearing it now, I've clearly missed out. Their sound is infectious, joyful, and very danceable. The transitions between songs are seamless, the samples from anywhere and everywhere, the beats heavy and plowing, the sonic diversity exactly what I want from all my albums. The spoken samples fit in perfectly within their songs, and while the turn-tabling is obvious, the musical samples are in huge quantity, there's an organic richness to all the tracks, much like Royskopp but taken even further.

The promo version features "With My Baby", immediately reminding me of Fatboy Slim. Not afraid of calling this the best track, siren and horse whinny and all. HIGHLY recommend listening to it if you haven't, I'm surprised it isn't on the normal track listing.

This blows out all the other instrumental hip hop albums I've heard thus far.

Favorite tracks: Electricity, With My Baby, Diners Only, Etoh, Extra Kings

>Mothers of Invention - Uncle Meat
>Experimental Rock, Jazz Rock

This album is packed with so many different idea and sequences all at once, it's hard to describe. A common theme would seem to be American corporatism, amongst the expertly recorded pieces.

The third 6 minute track is a blend of jazz and asian song; Dog Breath, In the Year of the Plague (featuring a pea from Veggie Tales) is a catchy and non-sensical country rock song before an alien invasion from various woodwinds and brass.

Uncle Meat Variations and Dog Breath Variations both return to the motifs of their previously named tracks; the former is probably one of my favorite tracks for its rich selection of instruments alone. There's never a dull moment -- only moments that aim to irritate.

Electric Aunt Jemima salutes the corporate pancake queen, and Prelude to King Kong is imitates a riled crowd of people in a bustling city. The group's rendition of God Bless America is cathartic, and A Pound For A Brown is dissonant city song, and Ian Underwood Whips It Out is essentially essentially improvised saxophone over a 5/3 time measure.

If We'd All Been Living In California is a very revealing recording of a conversation between Jimmy Carl Black and Frank Zappa, the actual picture of a starving artist. Following up the song with cooler songs like The Air and Project X works well to relift the listener out of the sudden reality check.

And the King Kong series is Jazz with some notable solo instruments. Easy to see why this track was a fan favorite for its recognizable melody, and the most accessible the album gets.

This will definitely grow on you while you listen. A monument of experimental rock.

Alameda 3 - Późne królestwo
This album was frustrating because it constantly switched from being the best thing ever to being really boring. The shorter tracks, besides Skryty (I recommend giving this one a listen), were fairly uneventful and just felt like interludes despite being several minutes long. The three monolith tracks were admittedly pretty awesome, but at times the way the synthesizer was mixed often caused the wall of ambient sounds to muffle the sound of the guitar. Overall a neat record that had more potential.

Nicolas Collins - It Was a Dark and Stormy Night
I am really unsure how to rate this because it sounded unlike anything I had heard before. It's hard to put into words what I experienced, but I do know that it was an experience I enjoyed.

Aphex Twin - Syro

>Acid Techno, Drill and Bass (according to RYM)

I was convinced that I would never hear an Aphex Twin album that I loved like other people seem to love Aphex Twin. But Syro, for me, was the Aphex Twin album that really hit the spot.

The craftmanship and knob-twiddling is at an all-time high, and it really shows. Richard's standard, boring and stale drum kit sounds have been kicked up a notch or abandoned altogether, making an album that sounds extremely clean, textured, and well designed. Bubbly, spastic synths and basslines populate these constantly shifting, schizophrenic shuffles of beats, creating the impression of layers and communities made of static, glitches, and colorful bright lights. To top it all off, the album ends with a beautiful (and very welcome) piano piece. It's all so well done, and so interesting, all the way though.

Syro has the polish I wanted from SAW Volume II and Drukqs, the complexity and texture I wanted from ...I Care Because You Do, the consistency I wanted from RDJ album, and the variety I wanted from SAW 85-92. I consider it the most complete Aphex Twin album, by far.

I might be committing suicide since this is the one that people seem to like least, but I least I got such a good album out of it.

>4.5/5

https://rateyourmusic.com/~FollowingLeader

And that concludes the Aphex Twin LPs. I'm looking forward to the EPs, as well as Surfing on Soundwaves and Caustic Window in the future. The LPs, ranked, are as follows:

v/a - Folk and Pop Sounds of Sumatra Vol. 1
>Dangdut, Caklempong

Sumatra is a pretty isolated place; it is generally rare to hear music from there. Rarer still is to hear weird transitional music from the era where people changed from traditional music to more general popular music, which, if you hadn't guessed, this comp documents. The music is weird (violins, gongs, flutes and cheap organs all coexisting) and loooo-fi (free tape hiss included in every track!); the singing is what you'd expect from obscure ass music from SEA, with the cracking voices, mumbling and lack of pitch control. Yet still, it's oddly captivating and has that bittersweet feeling of nostalgia you get when you hear those recordings of music that was almost forgotten forever.

3.5

Sume - Sumut
>brog :DDDDD

It's of great historical importance to Greenland, but actually listening to it is pretty dull. The vocals are interesting, but the rest is your standard issue prog tripe: half-assed sax playing, overproduced and just simply repetitive and uninteresting. From what I heard of it, I was expecting something far weirder that was supposed to represent an extremely independent spirit, but nah.

If triangle ever decides to finish this, sorry you have to listen to this.

I didn't care for much else on this album, but this one track really moved me for some reason. I've been listening to it on loop for quite some time now. It's only 2 1/2 minutes, and I'd really like someone to tell me why it's bad so I can be motivated to not listen to it any more.

btw if you decide to hear West Side Story, hear the original cast recording and NOT the film soundtrack. 200x better. Perhaps I should actually see a performance of it though.

heres a dump of albums i tried today. i liked all of them. a lot.
>Mindly Rotten - The Most Exquisite Agonies
@zane yeah you should have done this for yr listenalong. this kicked so much ass. it was a super pummeling listen, and like yr review says, those vocals are inhuman and that snare is weird as fuck. its short enough to listen to over and over again. i really enjoyed it.
3.5+

>chris††† - Social Justice Whatever
maybe im just a sucker for memes, but this made me feel weirdly nostalgic. i recognized most of the samples, but to hear them reimagined in this way is both hilarious, but in a way, kind of beautiful. it really is the essence of the internet, made into an album. i ironically unironically enjoyed it? yeah.
3.5

>Oxbow - The Narcotic Story
honestly didnt do as much for me as id have liked it to do :( there were some really emotional moments on here (which save it from a lower rating) but really i didnt find most of it to be that memorable. im still gonna continue to dig into oxbow's discog a bit, but ig this left me disappointed.
3.0-

>Jim O'Rourke - Fast Car
such lovely, repetitive drone. gosh, this was just too nice. the middle part where its just total drone and then it fades back into the beautiful repeating melody... god damn man
3.5++

>King Geedorah - Take Me To Your Leader
THOSE. FUCKING. BEATS. I honestly think I might like this more than Madvillainy. The beats are just too damn good and all the MC's featured and DOOM himself have such great bars. The skits are even good god damn. Good shit.

every song felt like it went on way too long and half of them didn't seem out of place on some schmitzy 80's pop album
maybe it's higher than 2.5 but I would give it 3.5 max I think
the musical abortions score was generous
listening to daikanjyo right now and enjoying it quite a bit

Blumfeld - L'etat et moi (1994)
>alternative rock, indie rock, hamburger schule

I don’t speak a lick of German, and I couldn’t find any decent English translations for the lyrics, so the appeal of the supposedly great lyrics is totally lost upon me. So I’m sure I really have no business talking about this, but I really enjoyed this nonetheless. The vocals are delivered incredibly well. Distelmeyer’s voice is wonderful and he sings with such passion and power, he moves along every track here with ease. Some tracks might lack any musical identity, but the whole album is full of one damn solid indie rock track after another. The instrumentals are super tight and catchy, and it balances the noisy and abrasive with the light and melodic perfectly.

3.0+

Squarepusher - Hard Normal Daddy (1997)
>drill and bass

If Squarepusher didn’t have to show off his bass chops by throwing a lot of haphazard, corny jazz tracks on his album, we’d have a fine Aphex-esque drill and bass album here. Squarepusher is definitely a great producer that frequently shows he can hold his own against other Warp giants on great tracks like “Beep Street” and “Rustic Raver”, but the jazz fusion stuff he throws in here is unbelievably cheesy and ill-fitting with the drill and bass. Still cool from a production standpoint, and the dude’s a great bassist, but these tracks feel so completely unnecessary, and they drag down an otherwise quite good album.

2.5+

Tenhi - Kauan (1999)
>dark folk

Dark folk is a genre that just inherently always has its head up its own ass, and this album pretty much does what it says on the tin. Over-the-top, dark and spooky soundcapes that evoke some cool nature imagery but evoke absolutely nothing emotionally. It’s fairly pretty, especially the piano-based tracks, and it’s good at creating an atmosphere to get lost in, but this is so not my thing.

Roy Harper - Stormcock (1971)
>progressive folk, singer/songwriter

Fairly booze-soaked, charming, pastoral prog folk. The ever-changing nature of the pieces here them always intriguing to listen to, even if some of the more rocky, swaggering moments don’t appeal to me at all. Not only would I not like them individually, they just fit awkward with the free-flowing, beautiful folk that makes up the majority of this record. Harper’s voice is not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but imperfect vocalists are the best, and passion oozes out of every word he sings. The vocals are just a side act to the songwriting and arrangements, and even though they sometimes seem a bit too noodly or to swaggering, they’re beautiful, breathing, and really well done. Joanna Newsom always sings this record’s praises, and I can definitely see why.

3.0-

Good job on having a 5/5 blapp. Overall: 3.83
>Doopees - Doopee Time

I was absolutely loving this record for the first 3 tracks, but afterwards it fell off a decent amount. It was still good and enjoyable, but if the quality from the start was maintained it could've been an easy 4.5/5. Her voice was sometimes beautiful, sometimes kind of annoying. I loved the sound collage they did here though. Solid art pop overall.

3.5/5

5/5

GFR. Good shit for loving gero, there one of my favorite groups, Hell Driver being one of my lesser enjoyed records by them and still being great. Overall: 3.16
>Six Organs of Admittance - Dark Noontide

Not my kind of stuff, I wasn't really anticipating enjoying this after seeing the genres. There didn't seem to be anything worth listening to here. The singing was poor, the forest-y atmosphere is not great compared to stuff like Mount Eerie and Natural Snow Buildings. Very boring, bad aesthetic, bad execution.

>Tim Hecker - Haunt Me, Haunt Me Do It Again
The first album under the Tim Hecker moniker. It's clear from the start that this is a little less out there than most of his later releases: it's way prettier, focusing on more conventional warm drones and less on booming walls of noise. As such, it's less directly engaging than his more "active" (post-Harmony) works, but it still sets a really thick atmosphere, which over the course of the record keeps evolving ever so slowly.
There's some other elements that I haven't really heard anywhere else in his discography so far; on a couple of tracks there's hints of disembodied voices floating just underneath the warped drones, there's some subtly glitchy moments (it sounds like there's some actual circuit bending going on at some point) as well as some drums that pop up occasionally on the latter half of the album.
Overall, it seems pretty clear that Tim Hecker was still trying to find his trademark style on this album, but it turns out he can pull off generic droney ambient really well.

>no trend - teen love
first track is not great and redeemed wholly by the last track, a surprisingly pretty and lyrical affair whose nuance contrasts the meatiness of the first. "teen love" is fantastic enough that this whole single can be called great.

>764-hero
some alt-tinged indie rock that's like Built to Spill but edgier. only really checked this out because Phil Ek had a hand in producing it, and his touch certainly shows; the guitar tones are great. the songwriting ranges from good to boring to annoying and the vocals leave a lot to be desired.

gonna try this thing where I just write briefly on my last 5 ratings

Linus' Blanket - Labor in Vain

A very short collection of bossa nova indie pop tunes. I think this is a release where "short and sweet" is more fitting than anywhere else. These comfy tunes just linger in your ear like the taste of good sugar in your mouth. Some may find it a bit bland but I personally think it's very good.

Master Kong Nay & Ouch Savy - Mekong Delta Blues

C A M B O D I A

I know nothing about how to analyse music like this desu. It was just some stringed instrument with vocals over it for 49 minutes. I enjoyed it but it was repetitive. I wish I had more to say but let's keep it at the fact that it's a nice album.

Mieko Miyazaki & Guo Gan - Nen Nen Sui Sui

This release was an assortment of music played on the erhu and the koto. Some of it was Asian and some of it was French. Regardless of origin though, all the pieces were lovely stuff. While yes, the style does get tiring after a while, it is elegant while it lasts. The koto + erhu combination is absolutely beautiful and played so well by the two performers. The Asian music was cool of course but the versions of French music showed a very different but equally great side to the compositions that I had not seen before. Potential favorite honestly.

Elend - The Umbersun

I know neoclassical darkwave is a pretty cheesy genre. I know the music tries hard to be le ebin and all that sorta stuff. I didn't mind this though. It felt pretty intense and not as bad as I thought it would be. It definitely got panned hard during the listenalong but what else would be expected tbqh. May move that rating down to a 2.5 tho.

Imagination - In the Heat of the Night

Yeah ok this was some disco stuff. I don't have much to say. There were pleasant tunes that you could definitely groove to but nothing really amazing. It's really just a solid album.
