I agree with Hesitation Marks being god-tier, I just wonder why you rate it so high personally. It is a pretty controversial release

The rotation of the two to seven is constantly changing. Right now Hesitation Marks is right up the at the top and rightfully so.

I rank it that high primarily based on how open and honest it felt to me. He said he woke up one day wishing he could be the same man who wrote TDS, then it really sunk what he wished for and it scared him enough to sit down and write songs about what he was feeling, which is something he hadn't done since The Fragile (to a lesser extent With Teeth, but With Teeth did have a running theme about overcoming addiction and less to do with his mental health as a whole)

Hesitation Marks is an extremely depressing self analysis wrapped up to sound like it isn't with the musical content.

But really ranking is all arbitrary if The Fragile is a 10/10 in my books, then AATCHB would be like a 7/10 so it's not a huge separation.

Still, I do find it amusing that I hated literally every album of Nine Inch Nails on first listen or release (my starter NIN was Deep, Closer and The Perfect Drug), but with each listen I got more and more into it. A friend gave me a used copy of Broken on my birthday, listened to it once and I threw it in my drawer for a full year. kek

I am happy that some one else feels the same way I do about Hesitation Marks.

Hesitation Marks is a perfect potrayel, a showcase of a person with depression as seen outside of the world.

At a quick glance, they may look happy or untroubled, content. Yet upon further inspection, you find broken person wishing and begging for help, but their own self hatred not allowing them to properly to do, therefore letting them to be swallowed deeper and deeper until nothing is left of them.

Hesitation Marks contains possibly some of the most depressing lyrics, yet Trent¨s vocal delivery is much more mellow and the sounds are subtle yet there is a clear pain underneath.


I think the perfect example of this would be two instances, Everything and I Would For You.

"Everything" is Trent putting on a mask to fool people around him that he is happy, only for it to shatter during the chorus where reality comes creeping in.

"I Would For You" where Trent is just about to start screaming "And I have only myself to blame and I have only myself to blame", only to cut himself off to jump back into the choruse, as if he got scared that people may have noticed some cracks.
