What are /mu/'s thoughts on Erik Satie?
Literally the Kenny G of classical, think about it.

Vivaldi fits the description more
Good shit, although his compositions often get mistaken for shitty royalty free sad music.

this
Yea I give him 10 thumbs up
Gymnopedies and Gnossiennes are pleasant but some are a little on the lacking side (gnossienne 5 is underrated as heck though) and I quite like Je te veux. Some of his other piano music is plain boring. I can't even remember the names of the ones I dislike. Vexations is a dumb meme and I don't even think he knew why he wrote it. Had the decency to leave it unpublished though.
Basically I feel the moody atmosphere he does best in has been replicated by Debussy and Ravel with far much more substantial composition.

Satie is good music to cook to.

By the way, here's Frank Zappa's cover of Ravel's Bolero.

He was really something else.

Pretty backwards looking for his time. Simple homophonic melodies, when everyone else was doing complex chromatic pieces, or getting into atonality.
Debussy, Schoenberg, Strauss, Webern, Mahler, Ravel - those are the stand out composers of the period. Satie is like the Philip Glass of his time - somewhat boring repetitive pieces. Saties "parade" is good, but that's about it.
DUDE FURNITURE LMAO
What are Ravel's best compositions and their best recordings?

Got a couple discs of Gymnopedies and Gnossiennes, differing interpretations really change the mood

According to /classical/ he made pop music.

I would include Elgar in that list, too. His compositions are a lot more sophisticated and innovative than his stuffy reputation would suggest. The Sea Pictures are beautiful, for instance.

As did Chopin.
