American Folk, Country, Blues, and other related genres and/or general fusions in the same spectrum.
Lately I've been big into a lot of alternative country, country-rock, and psychedelic country type releases. Also American Primitivism/experimental folk.

I've never been a big Gram Parsons fan. But this is a great track.

Honestly as much flack as people give the Dead on this board (and a lot of people under 30 really), the best of their spotty studio discography was their folk and country-oriented material.
Of course their musical explorations on records (be it folk/country, prog, disco, etc.) and use of studio production gimmicks (particularly in the post-1973 records) all got reworked live into that classic cohesive Dead-jam style to the point where it was hard to tell what era each song was really from.
Their live sound and performance is what gave them such singularity and cult following, but I digress...

I've met and played with David Nelson from New Riders and Mother Mcrees. Here's one of his best songs..

The Deads studio stuff were just sidenotes to what they were as a band. They were like an organism live, and still are to some extent.
What's the best country that doesn't make you look like a hipster?
Like you could play it in a small town and people would give you props

Exactly. Though I do think American Beauty and Workingman's Dead are classic albums in the American rock pantheon. The rest... good but often hit and miss.

Totally agree. Shakedown was cringy. Though I ironically love dancing in the street now.

Personally I've always dug Steve Earle. He came about as nashville songwriter in the 70s, as a popular solo artist in the 80s crossing over into the rock charts by the early 90s.
Copperhead Road is one of top played songs at EVERY single digital Touchtunes jukebox I've seen restaurants in towns in up in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Like I actually make a point to check jukeboxes if I see them and it's there everytime.

His post-heroin addiction stuff in the late 90s and very early 00s stuff is quite good but more esoteric and favored more by tastemakers/hipsters.
His early stuff goes over well with people who are into country and rock and grew up in that time.
i've been listening to a lot of willie
