Shhhhhit flinging ITT

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Well yeah they certainly set up a cool personality for themselves, nice Televisiony version of Ramones, and fuck you we won't conform to your verse chorus verse expectations, maaan. But I like hooks, and not too many of the tunes here are memorable after two listens. Unclear vocals and many brief songs make this sort of a half hour that happens to ya rather than one you can learn and follow along with. Guess I'll have to listen to it a few more times, and find out what else these guys got.

Shitty review bump

Superstar Quamallah - Invisible Man
>Jazz Rap

Feels like an updated version of Jazzmatazz, with plenty of jazzy, smooth production all over the tape. Quamallah is a solid MC, with a decent flow and he compliments most of the tracks well. Everything about him is old school and his flow is purposeful and precise, kinda like Common or Rakim. Kind of a nice change of pace in that sense.

The problem is, he spends too much time talking about the past. He's a "real MC" and he misses the days when Gang Starr, KRS One and all those "cool cats" were all over the radio. He name drops all sorts of New York acts, at least one a track. It's cool to hear him so passionate about his idols but it gets to the point where he isn't talking about much else. Songs like "Kunta Kente" prove that he can put together a nice political rap but he doesn't harness this energy or storytelling much throughout the album.

Okay album but it has its flaws.

2.5/5

Arthur Rubinstein - Nocturnes
>Romanticism

Hey this is some mellow classical piano. Really soothing stuff but it’s actually fairly engaging. I’m gonna sound like an idiot if I try talking about this anymore (too late) since I know so little about classical. I like this whole side of piano I’ve heard though, with Satie and Chopin.

3.5

Titus Andronicus - The Monitor
>Indie Rock, Folk Punk

Pretty tight indie punk album. The whole Civil War theme works well, even if it isn’t so subtle. Has a lot of similarities to Springsteen in a weird way, with an old school almost heartland feel. The samples were tight and I loved the energy. Consistently enjoyable, I could see this growing on me.

3.5

Gas - Narkopop
>Ambient

Soothing listen with nice textures and synth work all throughout. I can’t say it stands out in any way compared to other ambient - and it certainly isn’t at the same level as Pop - but it’s enjoyable. I’d argue that this overstays its welcome. Cool atmosphere though, I liked it.

takako minekawa - fun 9

this album put me in a really nice little bubble for its runtime, and the song Plash is absolutely perfect a mix of breakcore drums and bouncy folktronica. i am in love with it, the rest of the album is really nice, but it doesnt live up to that one song. hear it if you can!

horace andy - dance hall style

reggae has always been a tough genre for me. the common rhythm shared in the genre has always bothered me for being so much of the same, but this album avoids that slightly by sounding very unique. its like a wet psychedelic forest where the people who inhabit it's organic instruments have been replaced with tiny keyboards. pretty cool.

olli aarni - yötaivas

relaxing echoe-y windy bloopy blippy ambient collage. it has a very nice "healing music" kind of thing going on. i feel like in the right mood you'd bee able to have an eye opening experience with this album and i'll definitely be listening again when i think that time is come. i really liked it.

what should i do next?

This is not technically a comeback album, but it has all the problems of one. Debbie Harry's voice is far from where it should be to record a decent record. The lyrics are trite, the melodies are trite, the breakdowns are trite, the entire thing is trite.

There are some redeeming qualities though. For example, the bass on Long Time reminds me somewhat of earlier Blondie material. Fragments is an OK ballad, reminds me kind of like a mix between Bowie and Muse. But other than a couple of callbacks, the album does nothing interesting.

What the fuck is happening to the guitar effects on When I Gave Up on You? Why did they decide to put distortion of Harry's voice on Gravity? Who fucking wrote the lyrics to Doom or Destiny? Why is there so much EDM-sounding acoustic guitar on this record? Why is there a duet-chorus thing on Love Level???? LOVE LEVEL IS LITERALLY THE WORST GARBAGE I HAVE HEARD ALL YEAR! HOW IS THIS A BLONDIE SONG???

There's too much wrong with this album for it to be worth coming back to. There should be no more Blondie albums. This is horrible. They should resolve to simply practicing old material and keep touring with it.

Just checked this out for the first time in a while, and holy shit it's much worse than I remember. The fact that it comes after The Air Force, one of their bests is criminal. Hell, even Dear God, I Hate Myself after this has a decent amount of good songs. This has basically nothing.

It does have one of my favorite cover songs, albeit just for the sheer hilarity that Swans x Xiu Xiu covering Queen exists:

Deathprod - Morals and Dogma (2004)
>dark ambient, drone

More meditative and sparse than 99% of the dark ambient out there, and that’s saying a lot. Deathprod, a.k.a. Helge Sten of both Supersilent and Motorpsycho (because those groups are so similar) creates eerie, beautiful soundscape with very little material to work from. This ultra-simplistic approach is a bit too unobtrusive, and it sometimes makes the whole album seem like background music, but it adds to the intensity and the beauty of the album, and it sure doesn’t hurt that Sten has a wonderful ear for what tones sound great and unsettling.

>Desertshore - s/t
Naming your band after a very well-known album and having it be self-titled is always a hoot. I have found every track on YT except track 1 and 6 but I'd prefer something not uploaded in 2011.

Mods, why are RYM links showing up as connection errors now? Shit is annoying.

Yeah but it's really good.

Also for the love of god don't listen to the version with half an hour of leftover film audio. If there's no track that's half an hour long of just spoken word then you'll have done right.

>Mice Parade - Obrigado Saudade
Happy electronics, folk and post rock. Nothing special at all and I've heard the ideas here countless times.
6-/11

>Pepe Deluxé - Spare Time Machine
This sounds exactly like the stuff my mother used to put on. The intros and outros were good but as soon as the guitars start it goes downhill. It does however stay completely interesting throughout. Also why did "Pussy Cat Rock" have to be a song on this album, ugh.
4+/11

>Wye Oak - Tween
Typical bad indie pop songwriting. Much like Pepe Deluxe I quite liked the intros to the songs on this.
4-/11

Ok can this production style just piss off: How to make cool experimental pop electronics in 201X. Can the narrator just shut the fuck up too please. I won't lie there were good moments throughout but usually the narrator would obstruct most enjoyment I could have. lol technology

Listens from yesterday.
Moondance was okay.
Listened to Pet Sounds 3 times, just a really nice album.
Listened to The Glow, Pt. 2 twice, I really liked it.
Both AJJ albums were pretty short but alright, if a bit samey.
I need to give Spiderland another listen.
Elephant Eyelash wasn't bad but need to listen again.
Lost Notes..., need to listen to again but I liked it on the whole.
Moh Lhean wasn't bad and it makes me look forward to seeing Why? live even more.
I really enjoyed Can't Maintain, it's somewhere inbetween the style of Knife Man and People Who Eat People... which I dug. Will listen again.
And My Old Man was pretty nice, probs the saddest album of Mac's that I've listened to.
Any recs lads?

Stickmen - Insatiable
This sucks, I hate this so much, normally I like No-wave but this is just terrible on all levels, I'm really sorry if you enjoy this but it's bad, it's a perfect storm of skronk and annoying vocals, It's like the pop group but worse in every way

Satie//Reinbert de Leeuw - Gnosseinns/Gymnopedies
Gymnopedies is a meme composition but it's hard to deny that it isn't actually good, this particular performance is at glacial pace, which really draws out the different tonal resonances in there, it's good

James Benning - Nightfall
[2012]
>98 min.

This film is so simple that talking about becomes incredibly hard. I first came to know of it because an italian blog with extreme views about cinema called it THE most important movie ever, and I was sincerely intrigued; it ended up being such an unique experience that now I understand what they were talking about.
Nightfall isn't something you can explain. It's cinema devoid of plot, meaning, layers and revelations, it's what would happen if you took cinema and stripped down all the details until you found its core.
The film consists of a single shot of a forest and how the light changes from day to night (yeah, title's a big spoiler). It requires a special mindset going into it, and a lot of willingness, and of course most people uninterested will think the idea is lame, but watching this is quite an undescribable experience - as the blog's writer says, when one watches Nightfall they are "inside" the film.
I enjoyed it a lot. Kind of too extreme of a movie for me to give it the perfect score but I'm sure with some toned down projects by this guy I will find something more my way.

Ethy's third ever perfect rating on RYM, for those keeping track at home.

>Grateful Dead - Cornell 5/8/77

Hey, look, 40 years ago today. I know these tapes well and I was sure this score was coming, but there's not a ton that can be said about the most talked-about and mythologized (poke around--there's a conspiracy theory about how it's too good to have ever actually happened) Grateful Dead show that hasn't already been said.

Barton Hall came to be renowned as the best ever Grateful Dead show in the tape trading days, and part of the mythology is this anti-hype crowd that holds that maybe it wouldn't have been considered so if it (A) weren't so widely circulated and (B) didn't have such a great sound quality. Nonetheless, the "best" Grateful Dead concert is finally seeing the light of day with an offical, mastered release.

First thing of note is how incredible it does indeed sound. Far too often there's something missing from the mix--Phil Lesh's bass, Keith Godchaux's keyboard, or the all-important feeling of actually being there at the show. It's all especially relevant here because the #1 appeal of this show as best-ever is group interplay. The solos are all improvised, of course, as are the extended instrumental jams and transitions between songs. And if I can add one fresh piece of commentary about this show is that it's a specific jamming style that carries this show so well. They don't go out-there like they do in earlier years and there's nothing close to a "Dark Star", but there is this chaotic boiling point that's reached throughout the show.

>>72659643
Take for example the centerpiece of the show--"Scarlet Begonias" -> "Fire on the Mountain", certainly one of the most talked about single jams in Dead history. The combination is a showcase of tension with the high-strung Scarlet erupting into the slow-burn Fire, but this version here is quintessential in its perfectly smooth and seamless transition without any lost energy. It seems to often be Jerry that carries the group out, but one could point separately to Lesh, Godchaux, or the two drummers instigating the jam here. If nothing else, make sure to listen to this one segment.

As I've alluded to, it's this coalesced tension caused by everyone independently pushing forth ideas rather than supporting Jerry's lead that carries this show. There's really too much to talk about here, but I hear this same energy especially in "Dancing in the Streets", "Lazy Lightning" -> "Supplication", "Not Fade Away", and "Morning Dew", which isn't to discredit anything I've left out.

I don't know whether or not this is the best show ever. Some seem to have higher highs, plenty are certainly more experimental, but there does seem to be a disproportionate amount of magic here.

Alright here goes nothing

[1\2?]

Ice Cube - Kill At Will EP
>West Coast Hip-Hop

After the surprise success of Amerikkka’s Most Wanted, Cube capitalized with a follow-up EP. At only 7 tracks, it’s pretty short - consisting of remixes and B-Sides from Amerikkka’s. You didn’t have to tell me that Cube’s B Sides from this era would be above average - but man someone shoulda told me they were this good.
>>
>>72661704
[2\2]

Bomb Squad really had their finger on the pulse of LA at the time, with these beats capturing a chaotic atmosphere. They’re filled with all sorts of soul/funk samples that are scratched in dissonantly and aggressively. Every time I hear this style, I think about this quote from a Bomb Squad producer - “Musicians said ‘we’re not making music, we’re making noise’. So I said ‘noise?? Wanna hear noise?’ I want to be music’s worst nightmare!”. That’s pretty much the sound on these beats, with those walls of dense sampling and that almost apocalyptic atmosphere.
>>
>>72661704
Cube himself absolutely tears it up on this EP too. The remixes are obviously tight but the new tracks are the real highlights. “Jackin For Beats” is hard as shit. And man “The Product” is one of the best songs he made. Only Cube could make life sound like an unrelenting battle. Dude even makes birth sound hellish. “Dead Homiez” is pretty self-explanatory but it’s quite somber and touching. There was always a political message of some sorts in most of his music but this is up there as his most personal imo.

I never used to be so big into this sound but the more I listen, the more it grows on me. At this point, I think Ice Cube might be approaching my top 5-10 MCs all time. His peak wasn’t the longest but he really had something going on for about 4 or 5 years.

4/5

Basically lap steel used in country blues-y style instrumental rock tracks and very layered drones. Think Cantu-Ledesma but not as noisy. A W E S O M E.

m. sage - rife w/ typo

really nice mellow glitchy collage-y rhythm stuff. really fun to hear how well put together each little sound is. as a first introdution to orange milk besides that david kanaga album from this year, it makes me really excited to hear other stuff from the label. i might do an orange milk specialty chart based on rod's list.

Finishing this boy up

Kind of a bad past few days. Nothing really surprised or captivated me. Everything was either bad or mediocre.

The tuxedomoon albums I heard were either passable or just terrible which really disappointed me.

I feel like I didn't "get" West Side Story, and the only song that I really enjoyed was "Maria", which honestly really captivated me. It was probably the best song on this on this list jesus. I need to see this performed probably.

The Haino album felt like safe and boring watered-down blues.

Pat Metheny Group was fucking awful.

Good chart though.

Literally I don't give a fuck. Music shouldn't be propelled by story or creativity beyond the notes. My face when you get excited by the thought of an artist implementing lore from previous albums to tell a story. Stories are fucking gay. Give me three minute songs that begin and end with major chords. Nothing complicated, nothing extravagant. Ziggy Stardust isn't about anything and I don't know or care why people insist it's a concept album. Concept? Who needs concepts beyond the end of a song? My favourite food is plain rice and my favourite drink is water and my favourite fruit is the apple. Go to sleep at 9pm sharp every night and wake up at 8am sharp every morning. Breakfast, work out, shower, go to work, come home, make dinner, go to sleep.

>borzoi vs erictaxxon.bandcamp.com

buena vista social club is some enjoyable Cuban music that is Cuban and enjoyable. first track is a serious highlight.

your infamous harp made a record that stretches from some good IDM-type stuff to boring pop and an 18 minute track of soft static. the "concept" is kind of melodramatic and the last couple tracks were not good.

borzoi advances! thanks for playing eric.

Need recs from:
Ethy, nat, Jangle, s, rod, borzoi, fish, and Terminus

Restriction is that the first letter of the name you post with around here must be the same as the first letter of the artist's name.

a tiny second chart because i'm bored and i keep thinking about these

snakefinger - greener postures

i'm pretty dissapointed with this one. zolo and new wave are two of my biggest loves and snakefinger's guitar playing on residents songs is amazing but here he is a little limp most of the time. it has a really strong middle section (tracks 4, 5, 6, and 7) but the surrounding ones are a little lame. i wanted to love this!

jon - smoke

i love this! really nice shambly cute short weirdo pop songs played on a toy sounding organ. very pastoral. i get an image of jon the dog playing these in a little barn surrounded by cows and chickens and her pet cat.

scott johnson - john somebody

does the first song sample elaine from seinfeld? i'm not sure, but it reminded me of her. the sampling on this album is really incredible and the guitar playing is what green posture's should have been. totally fun to listen to. the songs are built around some vocal clip or sound looped and chopped and created into a melody with really classic avant-proggy new wave guitars and synths and horns playing along until it turns into this mash of funny minimalism evolving and repeating into more and more little boxes of seperate bits still tied together. he turns a woman's laugh into a completely new instrument capable of playing many different things. the interplay between those voices and the guitars and synths is amazing. i love this kind of stuff.

they're surprised you wanna listen to less edgy metal when your taste isn't even that edgy to begin with, it's really radio friendly stuff
usually people will go the other direction and get into e.g. cannibal corpse, lamb of god, or some melodic death metal
melodeath actually gives you the option to go more and less edgy at the same time because those bands get poppy af check it out
