23 Reasons Why the Mondays are Madder than Your Favourite Band (that I nicked from the Mirror):
>According to singer Shaun Ryder, the Happy Mondays’ first instruments were “stolen from schools”.
>Having overslept before a gig in Newcastle, a panicked Ryder found his bandmates and roadies had already left their hotel. Quickly dressing and hailing a taxi, he headed for the city’s biggest venue, rushed through the stage door and arrived on stage just as the band were beginning their first number. Unfortunately, the band on the stage were Simply Red. The Mondays were playing down the road.
>The Mondays were big on nicknames. Ryder was rechristened X, guitarist Paul Day was Cow, dancer Mark Berry was obviously Bez and, in tribute to the Liverpool midfielder, drummer Gary Whelan was Ronnie. Keyboard player Paul Davis was less fortunate, inheriting the name Knobhead – later modified by a sympathetic Ryder to Penis.
>Asked to name his favourite film, Ryder surprisingly opted for 1993’s harrowing Guildford Four drama In The Name Of The Father. He explained: “It was f*cking funny – they even put the old granny in jail.”

>The defining Mondays photo, of Shaun Ryder sitting in a giant letter E on the roof of a Barcelona hotel, happened by accident. Photographer Kevin Cummins originally wanted to shoot the singer standing next to the letters ‘HOT’ of the hotel sign but says: “Then I realised what the fourth letter of Hotel is… Shaun was on the biggest E of his life.”

>Ryder doesn’t like interviews, saying: "Ones for the Daily Star and the Sun are OK – you know, tits, fannies and all that. But just speaking generally makes me feel uneasy."
>Asked to explain how he arrived at the name of post-Mondays band Black Grape, Ryder gestured to bandmate Kermit and said: “He’s black and I like grapes”.
>One of the Mondays’ earliest big breaks, a support gig at Glasgow’s Barrowlands, was spoiled when bouncers beat them up after discovering the band had broken into New Order’s dressing room in search of alcohol.

>When arrested by police in Jersey in 1989 for cocaine possession, Ryder was asked if he wanted an advocate, He replied: "I don't want no poncy southern drinks".
>Hearing rumours of crack use spiralling out of control during the recording of the Monday’s fourth album, Yes Please at reggae star Eddy Grant’s studio, a worried Wilson flew to Barbados to sort things out. He later claimed that, as his plane was coming into land, he saw Ryder and Bez wheeling one of Grant’s sofas down the road to trade for drugs.
>The opening track of the Mondays’ best album, 1989’s Bummed, is the C&W-tinged Country Song. In tribute to the classic joke about two deaf men at a live music night in the pub, it was originally entitled Some C*nt From Preston.
>Ryder is no friend of warnings on prescription drugs, believing: “If it says take eight on the packet it basically means you can take 28.”
>Ryder claims to have poisoned 3,000 Manchester pigeons during his youth, though the methods used have changed over time – from bread dipped in rat poison to amphetamine sulphate to crack cocaine and ecstasy. Rice was also mentioned, although the claim that the grain swells in the stomach of pigeons after digestion and makes them explode is an urban myth.
>Asked by the Observer to be the subject of their April Fool’s Day joke this year, Ryder went along with the ruse that he was being hired by David Cameron as an adviser on class but demanded that the paper also discuss his plans to run for Mayor of Salford.
>During his 21 days in the jungle on I’m A Celebrity…, Shaun Ryder swore over 5,000 times. He explained: “Me head was kettled.”
>In court for breaking a court order in 2010, Bez represented himself and told the judge: “I refuse to be found guilty. I will not recognise any sentence you give me.” Jailed for four weeks, he responded “bothered” and, as he was led to the cells, yelled “victory is in my grasp”.

>In the band’s code, heroin was referred to as ‘Kentucky Fried Chicken’. Ryder is said to have walked out of a meeting with EMI in 1994, as the Mondays were about to sign a £1.7million contract, telling executives he was “going for a KFC” and would be back soon. He never returned and the deal fell through.
>Having once been managed by the son of Mersey poet and Scaffold member Roger McGough, Ryder was later managed by the daughter of Henry Hill, the former gangster immortalised by Ray Liotta in the film GoodFellas.
>Attempts to record a follow-up to 1990 hit single Step On, faltered when Ryder sat speechless in the studio for three days, wearing a balaclava. Worried studio staff had to ask Wilson to tell him to take it off.
>The Mondays were responsible for one of music’s longest album titles – 1987 debut Squirrel and G-Man Twenty Four Hour Party People Plastic Face Carnt Smile (White Out – and possibly the world’s shortest album review. Melody Maker’s critique of Yes Please read simply “No thanks”.
