>Kurt Cobain kills himself after Nirvana becomes too big for him to handle
>Layne Staley becomes a shut-in at the peak of Alice In Chains' success and spends 8 years absolutely destroying himself with drugs before finally dying
>Soundgarden come to hate each other and break up at their creative and commercial peak
>Pearl Jam become one of the biggest bands in the world and then go on an autistic boycott against music videos and Ticketmaster and fuck their career up
Why were grunge bands so shit at handling success?
They realized they were killing rock and tried to stop but it was too late.
Alice in Chains are still good with DuVall tho.
But Kurt was murdered
even if they had handled it well, grunge was a fad and would have just soured had they continued. alice in chains was my favorite grunge band by far, still give jar of flies a listen every few weeks
>>72647477
Hole were better than Nirvana desu.
>>72647477
nah the evidence leads to most likely a suicide, its just that bitch abused the fuck outta him
because they hate themselves and they deserved to die
Cobain and Staley's suicides(and Staley did deliberately and willingly commit suicide even if it wasn't as immediate as blowing his brains out with a shotgun) had more to do with them realizing that fame and money weren't going to make up for their shitty upbringings and the emotional instability and personal dysfunction that resulted from those upbringings.
Staley also had the added bonus of his ex-fiancee killing herself with drugs first(after becoming destitute and forced to prostitute herself for drug monex), which by all accounts fucked him up pretty bad and made him even more self-destructive than he was before.
Soundgarden blew up in a pretty typical rockstar-esque way after their egos all blew up.
Pearl Jam, being the grunge equivalent of U2 and sharing U2's martyr complex, felt a sense of guilt about their massive success and tried to regain some personal sense of "authenticity" following Ten.
U2 did the same, only they did it by spending the 90s satirizing themselves and the very ideas of celebrity and rockstardom, whereas Pearl Jam just stopped making music videos and said a lot of dumb shit in interviews.
>>72647895
The Afghan Whigs were better than any of the big grunge bands and should have been the biggest American rock band of the 90s, but eh.

lol someone gotta post their gig with the symphony in one of those worst performances of all time threads. Only time I've ever seen that guy sing AIC, poser wannabe rock god, anyone who dresses like that has no business being in a grunge band
If you had told me in 1996 that Scott Weiland would make it until 2015 I wouldn't have believed you.
>>72647426
>Why were grunge bands so shit at handling success?
Because none of them were really built to survive in the landscape of mass pop culture and major labels. They were never supposed to become anything more than indie bands or minor, Headbangers Ball-tier major label bands at best.
Becoming the biggest bands on the planet naturally brought too much pressure onto them.

I mean she probably didn't but Nick Broomfield's doc is insane.
It's baffling to me that Staley lasted as long as he did. He looked extremely weak and malnourished all the way back in 1996, despite how much effort he put into concealing it. Dude could barely sit up straight during AIC's Unplugged gig.

Anyway, Nervermind is one of those 10/10 albums. You play it nowadays and it's still as good as it ever was.
Literally every song is a 10 and super catchy. I just listened to it the other day after ages and I have
>IM ON A PLAAAAAAAAAAIN UUUUUU
>LOVE MY SEEELF BETTER THAN YOU
>IM SOO HAPPY CAUSE TODAY I FOUND MY FRIENDS
etc stuck in my brain. Kurt sense of melody was underrated. I like how in Teen Spirit he just made the main vocal melody the guitar solo. Everything just fits perfectly on those songs.
The whole thing is underrated because it got so popular it became a meme.

>>72647426
>>Kurt Cobain kills himself after Nirvana becomes too big for him to handle
hahahahaha, dweebs actually think this.
Daily Reminder: he was always complaining that Peal Jam was getting played on MTV more than Nirvana and was paranoid that his relationship with MTV wasn't strong enough. He wanted to be the biggest band in the world. He killed himself because he was a drug addicted pussy who had no decent material left and he knew it would be the best thing for his career to "burn out" rather than "fade away", and he was right.
>>72651753
True, but they could have had a U2 career with massive hits off of every album for decades if they stuck to the formula, rather than just a devoted Grateful Dead-like fanbase.

Alice In Chains is no good without Layne and also they're not grunge. Sure they came out during the scene but they considered themselves blues metalists which will forever make them superior to any of the other grunge bands of the time. Not the metal part but the wicked blues influences.
>>72647426
Because part of the grunge commercial success was the selling object (the bands) being shit at life.
>>72656427
Alice in Chains was a glam metal band (and a damn good one) turned into proto sludge.
>>72647426
Grunge is just depressing music made by depressing people. I started listening to AIC and Pearl Jam when I was too young to really understand what the lyrics are about so I didn't connect on a personal level. Now I'm in college and every girl I meet with a Nirvana shirt on always talks about how her life sucks and her parents suck and how she spent all her money on cigarettes and clothes with holes in them etc. After meeting these people, seeing their bands play house shows and hearing them talk about how music sucks now it really makes me happy that grunge is dead. It's not a genre or attitude that I can really connect with at all. I'm listening to a lot more electronic these days and needless to say I'm feeling pretty freakin good.

>>72657234
His 2000's revivial of the Pumpkins ruined what Pumpkins was. What he turned into hasn't helped either.
Mostly unrelated, but I saw Meat Puppets and they're still good.
They somehow managed to noodle out a cover of Plateau and Lake of Fire both to like 10 minutes.
>>72657234
>>72647895
i disagree that they were better. definitely equal in terms of talent; there are some Hole songs that are better than Nirvana songs and vice versa
Courtney gets shit on more than she deserves. I mean, yeah, she burned a lot of bridges and thought being a cunt was the only way she could go about being a rock star, but having people blame her for her cowardly husbands death is a step far.

>>72657534
Not that guy, but I think people tend to think Plateau is originally Nirvana because it sounds less like Puppets than it does Nirvana.
>>72657529
It was getting cheaper. Now the shit's cheap as fuck and much more potent, unrefined stuff. That's a deadly combination. Many people try it once because it's so cheap and widely available, and then OD immediately. Those who don't are hooked hard and end up on the street doing anything for another dimebag.
>>72657234
Around 12 I really got into Smashing pumpkins and Billy was the main reason I first picked up the guitar. Still have a few albums in my car.
>>72657348

Here's the companion.
>The police first went in and then they said − I said, well, I need to go in and be with him. And they said, “Oh I wouldn’t do that.” And I said, “I can do this.” I’ve always promised myself that if anything happened to my children I would be there for them. And I went in, and he was tiny and I thought at first that he had made like a life-sized mannequin of himself because he had lots and lots of art projects always. And I thought, you know, somebody could have thrown that little guy over their shoulder and walked down the street and nobody would have even know that it was a real person...so, and I sat with him for a few minutes. And I told him that I was really sorry how things had turned out....

This is really weird and manipulative framing. Cobain was in a shitty situation with fame, an abusive unstable wife, and a heroin addiction. Staley OD'd way after AiC's peak, and that happened because he was a fucking junkie. Soundgarden had a great run, and they only broke up after 12 years, with Cornell becoming a celebrity. Pearl Jam's activism started on their second album, and Vedder is so political that it's a surprise he even waited that long. Also, Pearl Jam never broke up, and they're still huge.
Sorry OP, but you're full of shit.
If the grunge bands had issues with fame, then it's because the grunge scene started out as just Seattle's underground indie/punk scene, so they were products of that mindset.
