One of my friends had an extra ticket for Slowdive but I can't go because I have a final exam at the same time

There's notrhing wrong with not liking country, liking Death Grips, AnCo, or Grimes. There's nothing wrong with getting all your music from the internet. There's nothing right for being passionate about a certain band and avoiding certain genres. Threads like these feel more like people who care about the image their music gives them instead of personal enjoyment.

This was interesting to me. Do people just delete/throw out stuff they don't listen to much anymore? Do you not enjoy collecting?

Also, where do people discover new music not on the internet? I'm pretty poor, so the internet's the most valuable means for me.

Honestly, "folk" totally is a white dude with a guitar. I don't care that other cultures have their own "folk" music because:

1) they don't call it "folk"
2) we don't call it "folk"
3) the people who do call it "folk" are just talking about fucking Exuma and they can suck my ass

The whole "folk is music from any other culture that isn't rock, jazz, or rap" thing is fucking dumb. Folk is an English word, and it refers to a whole bigass genre that we're all aware of full of people like Iron and Wine and Ray LaMontagne ripping off Bob Dylan and Paul Simon, and if "folk" doesn't refer to that, then we have:

1) a whole style of music without a descriptive genre term
2) roughly two jizzilion styles of music that have nothing in common being lumped under the english word "folk" despite the fact that almost NONE of them would describe themselves that way

Genre terms are descriptive, not prescriptive. Folk is used to mean "white guy with a guitar" because that's the only way the word is useful. So "white guy with a guitar" is what it means.
>>
>>72644023

Live shows all suck. Listening exclusively to polished recordings is patrician.
>>
>>72644937
Folk music is just any music that originated from traditional popular culture. Sure, it's an umbrella term, but that's the point.
>>
>>72644883
oh, my bad
>>
>>72644998
It's such a useless class distinction.

"This is music of the folk, the commoners, the peasantry." As opposed to what? Classical? Cuz that's what it originally meant.

There was classical, and then there was ALL OTHER MUSIC. The music of the folk. The music of the poor people. That, in my opinion, is not a useful genre term. It's way too big. Taken literally, it means any music not performed by an orchestra.

And what's more, people use it to mean *any* world music that isn't rock, jazz, or rap. We have people calling traditional Chinese music played on traditional Chinese instruments for and by *actual royalty* folk music. How is music made for the imperial courts of China got anything to do with the folk?

Taken literally, all "folk" means is "poor people music," which is a dumb concept. And what's more, we use it in this Western Hemisphere-centric kinda' way that renders virtually all non-European music "folk" music--no matter how wealthy its intended audience.

I personally just think the word makes a lot more sense in a more specific and confined sense: it refers to musicians in the Western European folk minstrel tradition. European dudes with acoustic stringed instruments and little other accompaniment singing from the perspective of Western ideas of the commoner. That makes a lot more sense to me. That is a useful genre term. Plus, it's how most of the English-speaking world uses it, so it's got that going for it, too.
>>
>>72645102
Just because it isn't useful doesn't make it illegitimate. Defining all folk music as a white guy with a guitar misses so much folk music, in fact probably a majority of it. You could create a new term to mean "a white guy with a guitar" (there probably are a few out there already). Just because the term "doesn't make sense to you" doesn't mean that it isn't a real way of defining music.

>>72647036
okay, so those are microgenres, and I'm not going to be held responsible for repping every microgenre

jazz, rap, country, bluegrass, blues, and classical are all represented in my music library, and that's enough

I realize it's a slippery slope between genres and microgenres and what's the difference really and how can we draw hard lines in what's honestly a gradient between different styles of music but that's just how it is and we have to deal with it and I'm doing my best
>>
>>72647041
Not him but I've only been to three or four concerts/shows in my 24 years, mostly because I mainly listen to 50's/60's/70's music and live in the middle of nowhere.

I've never been to a live music show without my mom.
>>
>>72647078
Okay, but answer me this:

Given the premise I assume you're endorsing, which is that folk music is *not* simply a white guy with an acoustic guitar but rather any music which grows out of any culture's popular and traditional music forms...

how is Ed Shreean not folk? And what is your definition of folk that somehow manages to exclude him?
>>
>>72647100
Okay sure, the major genres fine.

Classical, jazz, r&b/funk/soul, rock/metal/punk, electronic and pop are all in there.
>>
>>72647133
Folk music is music orally passed down, not penned by some ginger retard in his 6th form common room between lessons, that's pop.

I mean, I agree that folk as a genre probably excludes Ed Sheeran, but what I've been saying is folk means, almost always:

>a single musician
>usually white
>following the western european minstrel tradition
>self-accompanying with an acoustic stringed instrument
>singing simple confessional or story songs
>that utilize simple traditional western major-key melodic structures

Ed Sheeran is excluded because his music draws too much on rap influence that lead him toward syncopated rhythms, interesting time signatures, and jazz scales

>>
>>72647238
okay well say it better than I did

Ed Sheeran is not folk because __________

I say it's because he incorporates influences outside of traditional western popular music. You say it's because...
>>
I mean, rap isn't folk, right? Why isn't rap folk? And if it is folk, what's useful about folk as a genre signifier?
>>
>>72647303
As I said in my first line...

Folk music is orally passed down.

You don't just write new folk songs. It's music of a culture ingrained therein like nursery rhymes, Christmas carols, songs about yak farming or morris dancing passed down through generations and can be singular artists, groups of people, white, black, Maori or British.

Anything else is pop/rock.
>>
>>72647357
Rap comes from funk and other more contemporary genres.

Folk is the traditional music of the common folk.
>>
>>72647330
>>72647357

>>72647376

hey, i'm gonna point out why exactly these bingo threads suck. i'm doing you a service if you're the kind of person who gets easily peer pressured. not that YOU would get peer pressured, right? here are the bullshit things in this bingo:

- don't have discerning taste
- don't have an open mind
- you can only be a patrician if you have music before an arbitrary year.
- don't be a nerd.
- you have to care about lyrics.
- don't publicly critique music.
- there are certain bands you're not allowed to like. don't enjoy them.
- you have to know a certain level of trivia to be considered legitimate.
- don't discuss genres we consider pretentious.
- you have to go to shows to really appreciate music.
- don't watch certain critiques.
- you're not allowed to only discover new music on the internet.
- if you watch anime or play videogames, you're a nerd and not good enough to listen to music.
- if you want a certain type of girlfriend, you're a loser.
- if you prefer swans over jazz, you suck.

here are the actually good things in this bingo.

- you can't have a closed mind when it comes to genres.*
- you should be honest about your favorite music.*
- don't assume the music takes no skill to perform just because of the instrument.*
- don't buy digitally mastered albums on vinyl.*
- don't assume certain types of music are only played by certain types of people.*
- don't judge music by its fans.*
- you should keep music you don't regularly listen to because it's interesting.*
- caring about scrobbling is gay.*

look, i like posting on mu as much as the next guy, but you have to admit that if this bingo thing isn't a shitpost, it's a big fat meme, and if you actually feel guilty because you have discerning taste, an open mind, or spend time critiquing music, etc, you're a fucking faggot.

Why does this matter? There's no point where you get proficient with an instrument and decide you have nothing more to learn.

you can also hear about shows from friends, other shows, flyers, venue calendars, wandering aimlessly until you find one, or playing them yourself.

what do you mean "etc"? are you gonna argue you find out what song is playing at the dentist's office through the internet? a new discovery method i thought of: panhandlers

fucking pleb. most people speak of rock, metal and punk separately anyway. we are discussing commonly used umbrella classifiers. whether these classifiers are fair or useful is a separate debate.

Well, to be fair, I use the term EDM when talking to normalfags. There is only one entire genre I dismiss, it's Brazillian "Serteanejo Universitario", also, dismiss in the sense "I will never listen to an entire album front to back". I've been in sertanejo concerts. They're fun to pick up girls.

Also, who the fuck does NOT want a qt shoegaze gf?

Some of these criteria are completely retarded and make me think the person who made this is the biggest pleb.

>Has listened to 90% or more of the /mu/core chart
>listening to more music making you a pleb
>ever

>hangs onto music that you don't regularly listen to
Nignog if you have a half decent sized library this is inevitable

>Buys digitally mastered music on vinyl
It's certainly not the definitive way to listen but collecting vinyl is enjoyable

>Discovers music almost exclusively on the internet
>not mostly using the best music finding method to find music

>>
>>72649986
I think the vinyl thing only refers to modern music that wasn't originally recorded for it.
>>
>>72649992
last.fm dickwaving shit. It records every time you listen to a track so you can show off on your page.
>>
>>72649992

You have a good attitude. /mu/ will invariably rec Townes Van Zandt and Johnny Cash, both of whom are great and you should absolutely listen to. In fact Townes Van Zandt's self-titled or Live at The Old Quarter are probably good places to start.

I would add Emmylou Harris, Hank Williams III, Sturgill Simpson, Chris Stapleton as some really good modern country.

once you've gotten into the sound listen to the OG Hank Williams' 40 Greatest Hits and bask in the greatness
>>
>>72650005
Right, but just because you buy new vinyl doesn't mean you think it's the best way to listen to the music. Its purpose isn't to be the best sounding format, it's more just for fun.
>>
>>72650010
I've never used last.fm actually, is the community that bad at dickwaving or is it worth using?
>>
>>72649876
you may want to check out american primitive guitar, like john fahey and stuff
>>
>>72650066
It's funny, as a classic country buff I'm not big on TVZ and can't stand Cash's 90's/00's stuff.
>>
>>72650087
The whole point of last.fm is "HEY EVERYBODY LOOK AT WHAT I LISTEN TO"
>>
>>72650087
Scrobbling is trashy but if you're looking for an algorithm to give you music recs then last.fm is as good a place as any for that.
>>
>>72650129
last.fm was pretty cool in 2008 or so, when it had more-or-less active discussion going on in groups, i've made some friends there

Don't care about FLAC or private trackers because I listen to music on CD, hipsters are a thing, not enough patience/cooardination for an instrument, not sure what even constitutes "underground", and I'm uncomfortable being around lots of strangers so I go to concerts with my mom.
