Shhhhh friend, it is only a meme
The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

oh also here's the review for friction lmao
Friction's Atsureki is a noisy, not-quite-No Wave record that turned out to be one of the best post-punk albums I've listened to in a while. Reck clearly brought elements from his time with Teenage Jesus and the Jerks here, though Friction is arguably more accessible and purely 'punk rock' than anything the Jerks ever made. It ends up being pretty catchy at times, and it's clear that they took some influence from the British post-punk scene as well as the American one. My personal favorite track is the proto-Sonic Youth jam Crazy Dream, with I Can Tell and Big-S being some other highlights. The biggest criticism of the album I can give is that it doesn't end particularly well, as the final track Out is definitely my least favorite. But, overall, this is a really great album that I can definitely see becoming a personal favorite with repeated listens.

>>72643964
there's like 3 people who /daily/ bothers desu
Original silence alternates between free jazz, noise rock and O'Rourke fucking with electronics. It's a loud fucking mess, a constant stream of improvisation where whenever a player stops, another one joins in and doesn't offer many breaks. But there's not much in regards to anything else: no buildups, not groovy and not really entertaining either. It's more noisy than it's interesting, and it feels like the whole thing was just puked on the go. I'd prefer this if they took it easy, made me think of another Gustafsson record: a trio with Reid on drums and Kieran on electronics, where they have more room to play and they take more time to develop the music. It has a pretty amazing lineup and I was pretty excited to see O'Rourke in a jazz setting improvising with electronics, but here it just goes to waste with everybody making noise for the hell of it.

OLD IT DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWN YEHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
>Blind Willie Johnson - The Complete Blind Willie Johnson
>Blues, Gospel
Don't have much to say about this. Johnson's voice is a smokey chest voice, his guitar adequate, and sings with his wife Willie B. Harris. Lots of covers of older gospel songs.
Knowing Johnson's life, you can hear his voice aching. From a time of a very real deprivation of rights, Johnson holds on to a hope against all odds.
A dusty and functional relic of 70+ years in age. must be my millennial attention span or something that makes me question how you can attentively listen to this over an hour
6/10
Dogwander. Overall: 3.00
>Keiji Haino - Soul's True Love
Pretty spooky stuff. Lots of variety to digest, but my favorite pieces were the drone/ harsh noise sections, specifically disc 3 (even more specifically, tracks 1 and 4 on disc 3), which I found to be better then the rest. I loved the atmosphere and tension it built. The free improv sections felt a little dry, but they were still decently enjoyable. Needless to say, this took a lot of endurance to finish, seeing as it was over 4 hours.
3.5/5
>Natalie Rose LeBrecht - Warraw
Run of the mill female-vocalist avant folk. Did not enjoy her voice in the slightest, the instrumentation didn't interest me, and I didn't like the appeal/ aesthetic of it in the first place. Overall boring and very ordinary. Sorry Dogwander <3 if it makes you feel better I usually don't like this genre anyway

Totally fair review.
>Lots of covers of older gospel songs
people debate if BWJ made a lot of those songs actually. Many were known standards, but others are thought to be either originals or lost standards that were just recorded by him first. In fact, every song on there might actually be a cover. It's kind of impossible to know, but fun to speculate about.

telstar drugs - telstar drugs
this one was amazing! i love how claustrophobic and then suddenly wide open it becomes. i'm a big fan of this detuned sounding guitar tone too. i can tell this one will be a huge favorite.
don cherry - orient
i was expecting to really like this one, but it didn't end up that way. i like the unusual sounds it has for jazz, but none of it really grabbed me. the only other don cherry i've heard was mu first part and that one was very immediate and touching but orient felt a little empty to me. interesting listen though.
what should i hear next?
>>72645040
It used to be bolded a few years ago and at the very top of the Avant-Folk page, I know that's the past but still, RYM is the sole reason for that albums popularity.

I honestly may put Public Strain on the relisten list, it's been a very long time. Also, I've heard Duster and didn't like it the first time, but that was like a year ago before I was accepting towards any sort of drone whatsoever. It has a chance this relisten, but don't be surprised if it gets the Trilogie De La Mort treatment. Have no clue how I'll like Telstar Drugs

Bow Wow's Warning From Stardust is just a bunch of cheesy (in a bad way), forgettable early 80's butt-metal. In fact, there's nothing more I can really say about it because it's so over-the-top while at the same time incredibly generic that I don't even want to think about it anymore.

>>72646795
i have good news for you
Classic.
I've decided to start including re-listens that I haven't rated to these charts instead of just clicking a star on rym because it's effectively the same process and better documents my listenings.
Don Cherry - Complete Communion (1965)
>Free Jazz
Two side-sprawling tracks that are enjoyable, but are more focused on process than execution. The tracks remain interesting throughout due to the natural variance of free jazz, but they are a little too reliant on a central ‘idea’ to explore the edges of each piece and grant the musicians an individual voice.
7.0 /10
1/3
Klaus Schulze - Irrlicht (1972)
>Electronic, Drone
Spoopy electronic that does a good job creating atmosphere but ultimately comes off as cheesy and underdeveloped. Very cold alien tones and dense sound is detracted from with long buildups and crescendos that serve neither as foreground or backround music particularly effectively.
6.0 /10
Kraftwerk - s/t (1970)
>Krautrock
By far the best I’ve heard from them; never enjoyed their later stuff but figured I’d give this a chance due to the Neu! connection. Glad I did; enjoyable album and even though it’s very amateur sounding it’s groovy, fun and enjoyable through the whole runtime.
7.5 /10
2/3
Butthole Surfers - Cream Corn EP (1985)
This band experienced a steep decline in quality after their first full length LP. This is no exception; the clever, grotesque and noisy formula you love devolves into mediocre sludge rock with repurposed hard rock riffs and incredibly overstayed formulaic humour.

Aphex Twin - ...I Care Because you Do
>Drill and bass, ambient techno
For the record, this is by far Aphex Twin's most consistent album I've listened to. The problem is, it's only consistently okay.
One of my least favorite things I hear in electronic music is an unchanging beat with simple chords or strings layered over it, and that being the whole song. I Care Because You Do has too much of tracks don't do anything or go anywhere for too long. But, there's a lot good beats with decent ideas, it just feels that Richard half-assed this one, compared to his other albums. Still, sounds pretty cool in a lot of places.

Production has been my main focus for a lot of these.
The weaker the production the lower the album score. Which is why stuff like Too Short got so low.
Only exception was Disposable Heroes. The lyrics on that were just constant "government is corrupt tv bad" cringe.

I think it means having music on your hard drive that you're probably never gonna listen to again instead of just deleting it.
I guess "having an external hard drive" is pleb now but that's such a 2012 word and it's been tacky as fuck for a while and also no one says it right so it's cringy af when you hear it irl
and buying Remastered stuff is fine if you know your shit

>>72648699
As in knowing whos pressings suck
For example, if you have shit taste like me and like Ween, knowing that Plain Records' pressing quality is shit, and knowing it's worth your money just to buy Ween's older prints. Not EVERY remaster sounds shittier. Zappa's original american pressings are dogshit. I have an original WOII4TM and a recently remastered one and the quality of the newer pressing is astounding.
It takes like 5 minutes of research, but it'll save you a pretty penny in a lot of cases.

So the majority of y'all are saying you don't completely dismiss crunkcore and other irredeemable genres? (obv not talking about trans)
>>72649565
no, not without ever hearing it
>>72649585
I never said without hearing it
>>72649609
does dismissing it mean "not actively searching for it but willing to have someone recommend a good example of the genre"?

no u
>>72649565
>>72649609
im pretty sure you fill in the square if you dismiss genres without having tried to get into them

>>72648458
>>72649689
>im pretty sure you fill in the square if you dismiss genres without having tried to get into them
no, see>>72649691
>>72649691
>>72649714
why do you think that
>>72649691
then that's expected that a lot of people here aren't dismissing it andn haven't checked the box
i checked it because punk :^)
>>72649735
where in the square does it say that you couldn't have tried to get into them?
>>72649758
i mean the square leaves a lot to be desired but typically in /mu/ discourse dismissing something means "disregarding something without having given it its fair shot"
and even going with your definition i still probably wouldn't fill it in
the word choice is important because there's a difference between disliking a genre and dismissing it
>>72649793
Idk what I understood from it is that you tried to get into it but failed and now dismissed it.
Otherwise it would have said "disregarding something without having given it its fair shot"
>>72649826
but then you literally would not be allowed to dislike any genre without having listened to every single release from it which doesn't really make sense
if you're right it's a poorly worded square
>>72649863
there's a HUGE difference between giving a genre its fair shot and listening to every release from it, not sure what you're on about
>>72644100
>5 months later
>>72649897
"fair shot" is a totally subjective term, and so is "dismissing"
like you could still be seen as "dismissing" a genre and labelling it bad/unable to produce good music even if you had listened to every release from it save one because you might have liked that release and it could have changed your opinion on the genre as a whole
>implying you're more patrician than someone else for NOT having heard a bunch of albums
>implying you're more patrician than me because i have more hard drive space
>implying folk doesn't refer to WhiGwAGs (among other things)
>>72648653
even if the term sounds pretty general what it's used for is pretty specific innit
>>72649565
crunkcore is really more of a convenient way to shut down people who tell you not to dismiss genres by sorta leading their argument ad absurdum (or using a strawman or i dont actually know what fallacy applies here desu) than an actual genre

>>72648458
:*)
>>72649963
>>implying folk doesn't refer to WhiGwAGs (among other things)
i agree with you there, but thats why we have "contemporary folk" to distinguish both
its a broad term and both definitions are valid so i dont see why it's "plebeian" to think one over the other

>John Fahey - Guitar Vol. 4 (The Great San Bernardino Birthday Party and Other Excursions)
Unfortunately I'm a little pleb when it comes to American Primitivism. The acoustic guitar isn't my favorite instrument honestly. This wasn't bad though, but I don't think I'd say it was enjoyable... listening to a guy pluck away at a guitar with nothing else going on just doesn't really do it for me. Oddly enough the "main" track here was probably one of my least favorites. Overall, it was decent I guess.
3/5
>Washington Phillips - The Key to the Kingdom
"Before ya educate the head, try to educate the heart" <3 Lovely stuff, barely missed the 4.5/5 mark. I really enjoyed the old style aesthetic of it, and his voice was very enjoyable. My first gospel/ country blues album, and I'll be sure to listen to more after hearing this.
