The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

plus sshx is of the girl species and nyar and herb are close enough

rude but not wrong

>Boris - Flood
>Psychedelic Rock, Minimalism, Drone

First track, and First thought: "Was Reich involved in this?"
Second thought: "Looks like you guys are 20 years late to the Minimalism party"
Third thought: "ok i like the cave sounds"

I think the first track is lacking in undertones like the pianos in Piano Phase would have, being electric and all. Piano Phase is mysterious, driving, and reassembles itself at will. Flood I sounds flat in comparison.

Thankfully, Flood 2 strays away from this cheap impersonation with some Slowcore. Nothing outstanding, but hypnotic nonetheless. A guitar solo at the end pierces through the water like a knife, but it works.

A faint voice comes through in Flood 3, joined with light electronic coos, and a lone guitar.

If Flood 2 was the end of a party, in a lone suburban town on a warm night, the beginning of Flood 3 would be a quiet confession between the last two people that were left. That is, until a distant roar introduces the first moments of fear: and it all comes crashing down, in moments of triumph and anger.

Flood 4 repeats a bass line you'll probably be familiar with from Flood 3 at this point, and lets itself sink beneath feedback. Nothing is left save a dull hiss, faint pitches and hums from some sort of machine, and a tidal push and pull. Handled much better than Flood 1, but that's because it's drone versus Minimalism.

The album has gone from minimalism to slowcore to post rock; an upward drift in dynamics, cresting higher and higher like a monstrous wave, before falling in Flood 4.

This isn't inaccessible in the slightest. Probably the easiest starter kit for anyone interested in drone-esque genres, since it's got influences from all of them. Flood is an excellent title for an album that seamlessly blends 4 waves of sound.

>Minor Threat - Complete Discography
>Hardcore punk

I've reached the conclusion that this is Punk music how it SHOULD be played. Skips the bullshit of pretending to know what it's talking about, and directing a stream of consciousness, all in a tight 40 minute album.

The first portion of the album follows a similar pattern: thwack drums at frenetic pace, strum loudly on distorted guitar, and yell the track title repeatedly with barely audible lyrics. The 1 to 2 minute lengths of each track forms tall and narrow mountains, that a rope haphazardly pulls you over rocks and dirt. It isn't until halfway through that the band is able to constrain themselves, trading a bit of their ferocity for musical composition itself; just compare the first "Out of Step (With the World)" EP version track to the album version.

12XU and In My Eyes signals the band's shift in directing their hostility. 12XU has a riling vocal performance, and In My Eyes restrains itself to deliver some faithful words: "You tell me that I make no difference / At least I'm fuckin' trying / What the fuck are you doing?"

Guilty Of Being White stands well to beat back white apologists: "I'm sorry / For something I didn't do // You blame me for slavery / A hundred years before I was born". Steppin Stone is probably my favorite track on the record for the distant vocal delivery. Look Back And Laugh feels a bit more hopeless, as Ian MacKaye is forced to lose to time and the human condition.

Cashing In, amongst the last 4 tracks of the album, is an exultant and cheeky anthem for the band itself, with some of the best playing, a great chorus, and chilling last note.

The last three tracks are from the band's first EP, Salad Days, recorded 6 years before the furious 1981 Minor Threat EP. Made me appreciate how this compilation was set up, having the very first tracks made by the band close out their final product-- they feel the most human.

Probably the best punk album I've heard yet.

i'm on quite the roll today

Пpeзидeнт & Aмaзoнкa - Жy-жy

absolutely lovely happy hardcore 90s dance euro blah. its so crisp. i love the chipmunk voices. on track 8 there is this really nasty male voice that comes in but thats the only thing i disliked about it. big love.

manfred schoof - european echoes

v neat avant jazz. love the absolute chaos and punk attitude, although its not as extreme as a similar album Babylon Bypass by Mohel, which is one of the few actually scary albums i've heard and its hard not to think of that while listening to manfred. good though.

christopher hipgrave - day

big fan of glitch and ambient and mixing the together is a great idea obviously. this one didn't amaze me, although i am probably not in the right emotional mood to really feel it right now. there are still some really cool tones in here and you get some good mental images from it, like streams with blue bridges crossing over them, or a new morning with fresh dew on the grass.

andrew poppy - the beating of wings

very pretty sort of poppy minimalism. reminds me a lot of ferrero's recent stuff but 30 years before him. track 3 isn't actually so good, but it has certain parts that are really neat so i'm not too bothered by it. it's largely like a kinda lame depeche mode which is very weird in the context of the rest of the album. i might edit out those bits for myself in the future. big big love.

what should i hear next?

Here's a 2017 chart. Pretty much everything I've listened to this year has been good, but often missing something, especially the albums on here that are follow-ups. Aside from Genetics and Windsurfing and The Necks of course, those are absolutely fantastic. Also, shout out to Fuuka ASMR for carving out their own niche and improving on this whole nightcore in a blender thing.

Let me know if you want me to elaborate on a score or want a lil review.

As long as Laurel Halo's new album blows me away like her new single did, I think I'll be okay this year.

alright let's resume our regularly scheduled posting

Ben Frost - By the Throat (2009)
>dark ambient, electronic

A better album than his 2014 A U R O R A, the only other album of his I’ve heard, but still far too remiscent of your generic film soundtrack to really be engaging. Frost understands what’s frightening to a listener and what evokes an emotional reaction, which is very effective on the first couple of tracks, but when he reuses these same tricks over and over again their impact is dulled and they come off monotonous and brash than fresh and frightening. The sound design is still cool, and I love how pulsing a lot of the more industrial segments here feel, but I’m still left a bit cold. Both because it’s a cold-sounding record, and because I’m just not into it.

Man, you're one of the most committed dudes here. I remember one time you told me after I'd written something on some album about how /daily/ needs more writers. I said I'd try writing at least once a week. Unsurprisingly, that lasted one week. It's insane how you can be so dedicated especially when one considers factors like school, family, friends, etc. You're a dedicated lad with neato taste, man.

Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells
I'm not a prog hater by any means, in fact I like prog. Love it even. But holy hell this was pretty garbage. New age-y bullshit symphonic prog that goes nowhere and says nothing. The whole 40-minute piece was built around very few interesting motifs and just felt stupidly long because of it. The only parts I kinda liked were the last 5 minutes of part one (but it was sort of ruined by the man announcing each instrument as they entered), and the last minute and a half of part 2 just because it made me laugh my ass off because before I listened I read a review saying how it reminded them of the background music on Spongebob, and I couldn't get that thought out of my head. Also the decision to include those weird vocals in part 2 baffles me because everything up until that point and afterwards was very poppy prog. The fact that this is considered a classic baffles me.

Cocteau Twins - Heaven or Las Vegas
Save for the beautiful opener and title track, all the tracks on this album felt very lackluster in comparison to those on Treasure. Not bad but disappointing.

Royal Trux - Twin Infinitives
Okay I can get behind this. Although it is very VERY rough around the edges, and a couple of tracks really got on my nerves (namely "Chances Are..." and "NY Avenue Bridge"), this album captivated in me in a way that few albums ever have. A 3.5 for now but I can see this going up once I give it more time.

Stars of the Lid - The Tired Sounds of Stars of the Lid

>Ambient, Drone

Music is supposed to be one or more of these things: emotional, interesting, energetic, relaxing, impressive, textured, groovy(for lack of a better word), psychedelic, and many more. This album is scarcely any of those (or anything else).

It surprises me that so much of The Tired Sounds of Stars of the Lid does absolutely nothing for me. Yes, there are a few beautiful pieces here, such as Requiem for Dying Mothers part 1, Gasfarming and Piano Acquieu, but the overwhelming majority of this album is, well, underwhelming. And it's not because it's ambient music, there's plenty of interesting ambient out there, but this not usually interesting. It's not particularly relaxing, either. It rarely has any sort of mood or aesthetic.

Brian Eno claimed the goal of ambient music is to create music "as interesting as it is ignorable," so at least The Tired Sounds of Stars of the Lid got the "ignorable" part right. As is the case with so many of these kinds of albums, there's an outstanding album that's just 40 minutes long somewhere in here. You just have to trim out the fat.

>2.5/5

https://rateyourmusic.com/~FollowingLeader

I'll give Avec and Refinement a try, but if I don't like those much either I'm not gonna torture myself and listen to their whole discography.

Since daily is supposed to be a place for music discussion, Any other tips on writing about music? Daily seems like a rough place to practice, since we can be sarcastic, rude and unforgiving about differing opinions. How does a young Dailyer grow comfortable? Is the answer "fuck you, kid"?

i never even wrote reviews before I started doing Daily like a month ago

I try to do a bit of research on the artist and context so i can make connections with the product with what they're creating, in the case that I'm not entirely enjoying something

Otherwise yeah this place is just a place to put down your thoughts

>>
>>72635390
/daily/ is not that tough of a place to practice in

as long as you're not stupid or immature with your reviews you'll be fine

as for tips on writing, literally just keep reading and writing

read other reviews and see how people describe stuff, learn more musical terms from them, read non-review stuff because that helps with any kind of writing and of course keep on writing because it gets easier as it goes along

I'm no professional nor are my reviews any good but I think these are good things to know when you're trying to write
>>
>>72635390
try to avoid being to condescending about an album, I think that's what generally makes people angry.
>>
>>72635481
Roach was more interesting to me, and had this really celestial and spacey sound design that I liked. I found the melodies more emotional, and the tracks themselves more interesting. Roach was like floating through the cover art. Stars of the Lid was more like floating through an old corn cob, and very slowly.

Also, what did /daily/ think of the new LCDS songs? They're my second favorite band, and I was kinda disappointed even though everyone else seems to be losing their mind over them.

god I am going to fucking demolish my data

Rudimentary Peni - Death Church (1983)
>anarcho-punk, hardcore punk

One of the angriest, most raw punk records I’ve ever heard. Blinko (probably one of my new favorite artists, as well) is a great punk vocalist, sneering and screaming on every track. The production may make the instrumentals sound a tad too thin, but the guitars come in like razors and compliment the vocals perfectly. The songwriting is pretty great too, it’s got unexpected layers that only reveal themselves upon a closer listen, something that more hardcore can do. Rough around the edges, but unexpectedly pretty genius.

3.0-

Catherine Ribeiro + Alpes - Ame debout (1971)
>avant-folk

Ribeiro’s vocals are insane, and they carry the whole album. She’s got the power and grace of Nico with the freakiness and the freeness of Diamanda Galás, which makes you grab onto every single word she belts out. It’s an incredible performances, and Alpes mostly do their best to keep up with it. Some lesser tracks, like the shorter, more poppy tracks that don’t let the vocals really shine, but these tracks seem to serve as appetizers for the long, sprawling tracks that are truly fantastic mixes of avant-folk and weird, spaced-out progressive rock.

of Montreal - Rune Husk (2017)
>neo-psychedelia, psychedelic pop

A serviceable, non-offensive psych pop EP. Doesn’t quite hit the levels of grandeur OM often hits, but the songs are alright. “Stag to the Stable” is a particulary catchy, raw slice of psych, boasting a great performance from Barnes (who as I’m sure you know I’m normally not a huge fan of). The other three tracks range from mediocre to totally forgettable, but this is worth a listen for that one track.

2.0+

Perfume Genius - No Shape (2017)
>art pop

There are some stunningly great tracks here, my god. “Slip Away” is a powerful, bombastic single that flirts with noise pop, and “Alan” is one of the most beautifully devastating closers I’ve heard in a while. The latter track really is perfect, Hadreas’ vocals are stunning, and the hook punches a damn hole in your heart. I really wanted to love this based on those tracks, but the rest of the tracks are just alright. Some cool attemps at minimal wave that evoke “Grid”, which I love, but the piano ballads (save for “Alan”) seem a tad bit generic. The vocals are always nice to listen to, but the songwriting and the general style of these tracks is bland, and this blandness completely clashes with Hadreas’ expressive vocals. Glad to see this getting a lot of acclaim, because it’s quite good, but it’s missing that spark to make it truly great.

>Ana Jikia - Watermelon Nap
interesting experimental electronic that doesn't have enough space to develop its few ideas too much. would recommend looking into the artist though. she has a lot of interesting stuff on her soundcloud.
6/10

>ジングルJINGLE - 10コマーシャル / テレビで立ち往生
A fairly horrid waste of time. An EP of mostly unedited, slightly distorted jingles, not even slowed down much from what I can tell. This thing was 7 minutes long and I still got bored. If you're going to do something like this, at least take the care to not link it to something that completely ruins the surreal aspect of it's existance in your rym profile (https://rateyourmusic.com/release/ep/soft-as-suede/sailor-luv-3/).
Also don't make your bandcamp page look like this:
anotheradbreak.bandcamp.com/releases
That's not even in reference to this release directly. Just, don't.
3/10

>Glenn Jones - Fleeting
Papa Jones talks you to sleep with his feisty six stringer.
7/10

>YYU - TIMETIMETIME&TIME
The best case result of the prompt "bandcamp folktronica." poppy glitches based on home made folk samples, with some influences of juke and footwork. fairly good use of 25 minutes.
7/10

>Jim O'Rourke - United Red Army
Did not expect this to end with a full on vocal soft rock ballad. This album does a very good job blending Jim's peaceful folky style with his noisy free improv style. A good starting point for anyone wanting to get into his weirder stuff.
Makes me wanna watch the movie.
8/10

>Jean-Luc Guionnet - Tirets
this grew on me as it went on. an hour and a quarter of organ improv. some tracks go on too long with too few ideas, namely in the first half, but tracks 3 and 4 on here really get into a good swing, balancing abstract melodies against each other.
6/10

>Daniel Schmidt and the Berkeley Gamelan - In My Arms, Many Flowers
I keep forgetting that i need to let Gamelan music take over my life at some point. should get on that soon.

இளையராஜா - Solla Solla
This is a really weird release, I tend towards liking it, it's really fucking loud and lo-fi, to the detriment of the sum of it's parts, but it's got this really cool 70s cop movie feel to it which I guess is weird coming out of India

Catherine Ribeiro + Alpes - Ame Debout
It's p ok, although I do think that it's length is a bit excessive

Urfaust - Ritual Music for the True Clochard
Really strange for a black metal album, the lo-fi production here adds to the overall experience, giving a kinda shoegazy atmoshit vibe, but not the bad kind a good kind, track three opened an eye in me, didn't know that that such a guitar riff was even possible

Slim Cessna's Auto Club - Jesus Let Me Down
I'm sorry I didn't like it at all, it's the rockabilly, justs gives me a really sleazy malboro red, black and white checkered floor barbershop vibe that I'm not into at all

Fish and s need to rec, observe the restriction

hmm
i guess the samples aren't mangled enough for the dissociation process to happen on my end, or to make up for the missing visual, soz rod your conceptual angle was totally cool and i appreciate that someone used this kind of sample material of course
the main issue is probably that ytps and vaporwave are effective in completely divergent ways, one through being spastic, one through being slow & dreamy, and it didnt go in either direction very well except for a fair handful of moments more on the vapor side
i feel like i should have paid attention to the tracklist, songs as conceptual units, but i was just laying there and it became a blur, whether to blame myself or poor organization on the artist's part idk idrc

Changing my opinion on an album after two years in between makes my ratings "provably false and unreliable"?

Only a libertarian jazzlord could think like this.

And when did I ever admit to "only listening to most albums once"? I listen to almost everything at least twice unless it's super long or I have a really strong opinion on it the first time around, which is rarely ever.
>>

You don't really listen to most things multiple times before rating them on RYM, do you? I think once is fine for the record, life is short.

>discuss albums as objectively good or bad
this has also never happened. Every time I discuss music I only offer my own thoughts and opinions and this is all I've ever done because it's all someone could ever hope to do. Even if the language is "x is bad" the obvious meaning is "I THINK x is bad" but implying that you couldn't figure that out on your own just by observing implies ignorance or just plain idiocy on your part as well as hypocrisy. Do you really think every critic ever is discussing art as objective or just simply giving their honest opinion. Of course art can be framed objectively to some extent but this doesn't change the fact that opinions are just that.

very bad post in general but nothing new I guess.

>>72642417
>>72642514
A rating usually happens after the first listen, but it's always subject to change upon hearing it more. It's not really most of the time, but you'd be surprised how often I change stuff around. I guess jangle is right that sometimes I only give an album one FULL proper listen, but I definitely hear stuff more passively more than once, which in a way also helps with forming opinions. First listens are much more intense and focused, while second listens (more like "hearings") happen while doing stuff that requires more attention like studying, programming, or some other shit. Sometimes the order is swapped but the process is the same.

Life is short but right now I have none atm. I basically go to class (most of which are easy this year), eat, sleep, sometimes study and watch youtube videos. All my other time is spent on listening to music. I imagine when I go back home and go to Uni with friends/gf next year I will probably spend less time on /daily/, the internet, and music in general.

A good distinction to help with this post is that

hearing /= listening

Anyone can hear anything. It's passive and requires no attention. When you listen to something it's active and requires most if not all of your attention. I know that's not news to most of you but I just wanted to say it just to make the distinction in what the hell I'm talking about.
