I don't think you should. I think you should obtain a command of your lyric's target language and how it behaves to music. You should understand how phonemes sound in relation to each other or how pitch and timbre affect the words' actual sonic qualities.

Only until you have a firm command of what sounds good to you, like honest to god good-- only then will you possess the ability to find the words that will be honest, heartfelt, authentic w/e.

Stay up late as shit (unless you have something to do the next day, obviously). Someone once told me that certain social filters in your brain become impaired with exhaustion, which is why a lot of great artists like Poe were insomniacs.

I don't know how true it is, but I know that it works for me. At the very least it helps set the mood.
