because that's why most people (esp. non-musicians) get into experimental music in the first place - not because it introduces them to new musical techniques but because it's something that defies social norms. if you hear any popular music described as "experimental" or "avant" that's what is actually meant 99% of the time. just non-commercial

The self titled was mostly just flinging shit but I think "Girls of Porn" and "Squeeze Me Macaroni" actually worked as songs in addition to being experimental and wacky.

The novelty of Mike Patton wears off as soon as you realize lots of other people have done the weird shit he's done and much better than him too (i.e. Diamanda Galas). And that "extreme vocal range" mostly comes from the fact that he uses techniques that most people tend not to use since they're not really palatable in most situations, but I'm certain most singers with a decent range can rival Mike's vocal range if they just learn the techniques. And this is coming from someone who likes the majority of what Mike Patton does.
