Pretty much this. The folk revival was mostly about the non-rural middle class discovering traditional songs and playing them. Dylan was certainly part of that early in his career, but switched to mostly performing his own material after his first album.

Ed Sheeran didn't drop out of school to dedicate his life to Woodie Guthrie, and he's never recorded an album of mostly traditional material.

Yeah, which is why his early recording are folk revival. I'm not arguing that anything past his first album can be called that. But it's pretty undeniable that he started out as part of that movement.
