What are you listening to right now?
What are your favourite labels?
What are your favourite jazz releases from this year?
>>
>inb4 /classical/ autists
>inb4 /mu/ shitposts

>>
I don't think I've ever listened to a jazz album released after 2010. The new Kamasi song is shit, sounds like a boring version of Pharaoh Sanders.

Same with classical music, really. I just can't stomach the never stuff.

Just my opinion. :^)

Yeah, I sometimes think that the golden era of jazz is gone too, but there are still some nice albums like for example Idris Ackamoor The Pyramids - We Be All Africans from last year, or many yass albums.

Colin Stetson still puts out good stuff
>>
>>72577242
The folks from /classical/ weren't that bad towards the end of the thread. There was also some interesting discussion on jazz towards the end of their own general too.
I think both generals got raided by some third party.
>>
what the point of this general if everyone constantly poats jazz in other threads

>>72573818

you either have a general and keep all discussion there or you dont
>>
>>72577795
It's a shame that the only two good kinds of music (classical and jazz) are relegated to containment threads because we can't have them taking up space that could be used for the five millionth shitpost about dadrock or death grips
>>
I will never understand why you all hide away in a general and let poptimists, memerap idiots and fantano drones take over the board.

Spam jazz, spam classical, spam good electronic music, push the retards out the board, don't hide away with your tails between your legs.

The golden age of jazz was the 20s and 30s (40s and 50s being the silver age). Sorry to say, but it's loooong gone.

Most posts are made by a handful of users. When there is little discussion, generals help with getting more of it. People can more easily bounce ideas off one another when they all gather in one place. The only reason why classical discussion survived even in times when practically no one was talking about jazz on /mu/ is because they've been autistic enough to keep their general alive and stick to it.

somebody just started a new thread to address one very specific question about jazz, probably because there was no general thread up at the time

Saw Chris Potter Quartet recently. Everyone is incredibly talented and it's great to see them show it. Several solos were absolutely spectacular, fantastic from beginning to end.

However, other solos weren't as effective unfortunately and they would drag on. In these less effective solos there were still moments of brilliance in it, which makes it endurable. I also felt that the drummer was in a weird position. He is something between Rashied Ali and Elvin Jones, very interesting, but that role occasionally doesn't exactly fit in with the rest of the group. Incredibly talented though! Also, sometimes Potter would blow too harshly and shrilly in places where he is supposed or where it's needed to play tenderly, making you question his style, something which bothers me sometimes about him in general. But then at another moment he completely does the job and surprises you and blows you away.

Apart from other songs I'm glad they played stuff off the new album: Heart in Hand, The Dreamer is the Dream, Sonic Anomaly. Ilimba was definitely a highlight, Potter was spectacular there and had the crowd riled up! Recommended!

Also, I would never have thought that Andrew Hill on Soprano would remind me of Coltrane a little bit (check out Mahogany). Really in love with his music atm.

About to listen for the first time while sitting on a $6 coach bus headed towards the trains to NYC. Feels good man. :'^)

Also, is anyone a fan of Christian Scott? I'd love to find more like his self-titled and Yesterday You Said Tomorrow. His last album was cool too, but I figure Robert Glasper has me covered there. :3
>>
When I started listening to jazz in the early 70, the notion that "the golden age of jazz is long past" was generally thought of as reactionary nonsense.

The music moves forward. There has been plenty of deep, great, powerful, life-affirming jazz since then -- think of Dave Holland's "Not For Nothing," Chris Potter's "Gratitude," Chick Corea's "Change," Glasper's "Experiment" and so many more.

There have also been endless stacks of non-at-good. To coin a phrase, "So what?" People try. That's the human condition.

I hasn't really been listening to a lot of jazz albums from this year, but
John Abercrombie Quartet - Up and Coming
Tigran Hamasyan - An Ancient Observer
Craig Taborn - Daylight Ghosts
Tomasz Stańko New York Quartet - December Avenue
weren't bad, although they weren't really anything special, but you may like them more than I.

Saagara - 2 and The Necks - Unfold were quiet nice.

Also, I'm not the creator of those charts, I'm just reposting them.

I actually have in previous threads. I think it's vastly overrated, but entertaining. I'm >>72597076
I didn't mean this to be a criticism of the album. It's cool if those things don't appeal to you, but I like a bit of primitivism in my musical diet. It's like fibre.
I agree that the rhythm section is rigid as funk and the lack of interplay is a big problem, but I think simple compositioname aren't inherently a bad thing and that the vibes player isn't the only good soloist.
The sax is pretty good, in the same way I like someone like Mats is. They're kind of untrained and not all that concerned with the melodic contours of their music, which gives them less expressivity to work with, but opens up a lot of space for focusing on pacing, timbre and dynamics. A great player can do that without abandoning harmonic and melodic considerations, but a pretty good player can still pull off some passionate playing with that limited toolkit. There's, if not a lot of skill, a lot of conviction in the very dirty and wild sax playing, enough to warrant hearing, albeit not enough to make it aoty material.
