it will make you sad if you start with that album
Listen to Seven Swans and see if you like it then move onto Carrie and Lowell.

Seconding this. Start with Illinois.

this. don't start with carrie and lowell
You should expect a really cohesive and for the most part pretty well balanced & even album. Mellow indie music. but it's not super interesting. And I don't think it's fun. Illinoise is super interesting & fun.
You'll just have to play around with his discography until you find stuff that you like. Generally, Seven Swans = folky, Michigan = idk, like Seven swans but more upbeat? Illinoise = more like multiinstrumental sort of, Age Of Adz = electronic experimental.
Good songs:
Age of Adz- Futile Devices, Vesuvius, Impossible Soul
Illinoise: Casimir Pulaski Day, Come on feel the illinoise part 1, John Wayne Gacy Jr.
Michigan: Romulus, Holland
Seven swans: All of the trees of the field will clap their hands, To be alone with you
Come on feel the illinoise part 1 is really his best song it's unique i recommend that one highly. And Impossible Soul is also really really fun to listen to, 25 minutes long yet still really enjoyable
I would say start with Illinois to get a good feel of Suf overall, however Carrie & Lowell is a pretty distinct from that in terms of lyrics and instrumentation.
But if you're going for this album specifically, expect nice sadness and maybe a tear. Pretty good album. Lyrics are nice and possibly heat-breaking. Sonically simple but still have a lot of passion.

Feels. But yeah, shouldn't start with it.
