No Rain Dogs or Swordfishtrombones allowed though!
If Rain Dogs isn't allowed then Mule Variations.

>>72566507
defintely blood money

this
Anyone here listened to all of Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards? I've been dying to but haven't had the time to hear it all in one sitting yet.
>>72566507
Mule Variations, I like when Tom does sprawling epics like Gun Street Girl and MV is like a whole album of that. I also like the more country-fied approach to the music
>>72566899
Oh, just looked it up and realized each disc is meant to be separate from the others so it doesn't need to be listened to in one 3 hour sitting lol.
Question still stands though: what do you guys think of it?
>>72566899
Yes, it's kinda like an anthology of Waits but with new material. Solid but only a handful of exceptional tracks for me.
>>72566636
>derails a decent thread
>makes it about fake album art
>makes fake album art not a square
first one i ever listened to, only one i've ever liked

You mean guitar? There's plenty of guitar in this in tracks like Hoist That Rag and Green Grass.

this song is GOAT
Blue Valentine or Mule Variations, but I still haven't listened to Real Gone or Black Rider. Should I even bother?
>>72567824
memes aside, real gone is great. black rider is forgettable unless you're a huge fag for borroughs
>>72567502
Piano, Tom's a piano man through and through
>>72567747
Yeah it's good, Real Gone is a good album, it's just not his best and I'm being a dick about it
>>72567878
Never thought about the lack of piano but now I get it.
>>72566569
Can't believe your the only one who's said nighthawks, easily my fav tom waits album
>>72567878
He plays guitar a lot, just in a really unorthodox way and more of a image thing.
>>72567905
I'm a bit surprised too, definitely my favourite of his earlier period.
One thing that irks me about it that I know shouldn't is that it's like a fake live album. It gives it a lovely, relaxed atmosphere but then I get distracted by the fact that all the people listening to him are in a recording studio
Where's the love for closing time
>>72568057
Yeah I could see that, but idk for me just the combination of the cover art and the actual music, I can suspend disbelief and imagine them all in some coffee shop on a rainy evening.
The diner one, if not rain dogs
I also like closing time and it's worth noting that I haven't listened to anything by him after rain dogs. I have to get around to that
>>72568100
That was the image I had in my head too, and then I made the mistake of reading the fucking wikipedia page
Maybe I'm just autistic
>>72567874
Black Rider is underrated, title track and Lucky Day are two of my favorite songs of all time.
>>72568090
closing time is my favorite waits album and ive never found anything like it. does anyone do that kind of piano blues as well?
Wasted and wounded
why is rain dogs his most popular
>>72568356
DUDE EXPERIMENTAL LMAO
>>72568356
Couple reasons:
-Like Swordfishtrombones it's a fairly effective blueprint for his whole career
-Unlike Swordfishtrombones, it's a more thought out, better constructed album, with no half baked interludes and retreats into safety
-It's a concept album, people eat that shit up
-It's got Downtown Train, Waits' most popular song (Even if it was by proxy)
>>72566507
sftb is the real answer but also nighthawks and real gone
>>72566569
Nighthawks is my favourite.
So chill.
>>72568400
Half of it maybe
The other is probably his most accessible work ever
>>72566507
down by law
