same C;
I love his work, but Beat the Champ was fucking stupid. As a concept, it was rather sound, but the overall execution was more than vanilla. I strongly prefer his minimalist/more acoustic work. As a writer, he's a phenomenal lyricist. There are few writers, even in poetry, that can write to his caliber.
I'd highly suggest his Black Pear ep
Beat the Champ was their 2nd best album so far.

agree with you mostly re: beat the champ however heel turn 2 is fucking killer
Greatest contemporary lyricist.
On his books: WIWV was amazing, Universal Harvester was not, haven't read the black sabbath one

wtf are you even talking about

john darnielle
I dont think any album could effect me more than All Hail West Texas or Tallahassee. Very few albums have stuck with me like those two.

I thought Beat the Champ was fantastic. Good balance of simple strummed chords and more complex instrumentation. Fit the lyrics well. It's also one of their catchiest.
Who else hyped for Goths? When Andrew Eldritch dropped I was kinda interested in a guitarless Mountain Goats album, but now that Rain In Soho has dropped I can hardly wait anymore.
