They're literally polar opposites. If you call yourself a pop band, you're declaring that you're in the mainstream and are producing that kind of mass-appeal music.

Not that there's anything wrong with that necessarily. Pop music can be good.

But punk is about refusing to be bound and refusing to be only what is popular. Which does not necessarily make for good music, either, but the point is that the ideas behind each genre are antithetical.
