How do I even begin to place lyrics into a song I made?
wish I knew, friendly and synmpathetic bump for you
Intuition, stupid. Music isn't a math problem.

When do I start? At the first strum? How long does the verse have to be? Do I sing slow or fast?

Listen carefully to your favorite singers and the music that they sing over. if you like how they phrase the lyrics over the music, then try imitating that as a first effort. practice, listen some more, keep practicing. and listen to yourself as well. takes time, anon. you can do it

This is how I'm trying to go about it. I can see how they do it but its much harder to put this analysis into practise on my own work

most popular music, because of it's african roots, use heavy syncopation. so maybe try starting on the & of 1 or the & of 4 of the bar before it.
>improvise melody
>polish it up, change bits you don't like
>if you don't like any of it, start again from step 1
>figure out how many syllables can fit in with the melodyand how to best phrase your words to move with it easily
>write words that fit the tone of the song (or don't, it's up to you and both ways have their merits)
sort of hard to articulate since I'm not a music scientist but this is what works for me

come up with a melody, even just by humming and then try to put words in it. maybe prewritten or something that suits the mood of the music

This guy gets it. Composition, like writing, is a lot of listening and understanding what other people have done and trying to incorporate their techniques into your own. Of course, you won't learn how to write until you actually do it.
Just listen to your heart
Thats what i always do
