Reality is an illusion, the universe is a hologram.

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Kyuss - Blues for the Red Sun (1992)
>stoner rock, stoner metal

Kyuss doing what Kyuss do best, crunchy stoner metal with sick riffs. The purely song-based structure is a lot more underwhelming than the free-flowing nature of Welcome to Sky Valley, but the guitar work delivers, as does the crushing rhythm section. The vocals do fucking suck, but that's not exclusive to this album. Special marks to "50 Million Year Trip (Downside Up)", probably one of the best stoner rock/metal songs I've ever heard, and luckily the whole album follows in this great vein, it just lacks any real memorability.

3.0-

of Montreal - Satanic Panic in the Attic (2004)
>psychedelic pop, indie pop, neo-psychedelia

Nice little pop record. Drops majorly in the second half, especially following great tracks like "Disconnect the Dots" and "Lysergic Bliss", and Kevin Barnes is a really underwhelming vocalist, standing in stark constrast to pretty much every other vocalist in Elephant 6. There's still a really damn solid pop record hidden underneath some tracks that go absolutely nowhere, and I like it's relatively simplistic outlook compared to the maximalism of Hissing Fauna. I love the glammy vibes on a couple tracks, too.

2.5+

Sunny Day Real Estate - How It Feels to Be Something On (1998)
>alternative rock, midwest emo, indie rock

So much more contemplative, impressive, and mature than Diary. The post-hardcore sound present on Diary is completely gone, replaced with mature, full-bodied guitar soundscapes and soaring falsetto vocals. This new approach can get a tad noodly and up its own ass sometimes, but it's really quite beautiful. It's midwest emo at it's most twinkly and least emotive, and this lack of catharsis present in groups like Mineral and Cap'n Jazz can sometimes hurt the album, but it's a perfect record for the contemplative emo fan or any fan of American Football.

Nightbus from theatre to campus doesn't show up for another 20 minutes so I might as well phonepost.

Did any of y'all see Your Name? Any thoughts?

I just saw it (in a theatre that was just me and a friend, mind you. Isn't this movie supposed to be doing well?). Animation was breathtaking and the story was pretty well done, even if it did have a lot of anime troupe-y stuff that would probably bother some who have seen more of the genre. I feel like the people that would like this movie the most are those who have, like, only seen the Disney-adapted Ghibli movies and people who have seen every anime ever. Would highly rec it if you just want a pretty well done modern animated movie. I don't wanna give too much away because I feel like the less you know going into this the better.

>Mo*Te - Life in a Peaceful New World
The beginnings of both of the songs had really interesting things going on, and there were other interesting bits woven within, but this album fell into the usual pace of a harsh noise wall album, with large portions of time devoted to boring static. Still, I did enjoy it overall.

>Baby Huey - The Baby Huey Story: The Living Legend
Really solid and fun funk.

8-/11

>Swirlies - They Spent Their Wild Youthful Days in the Glittering World of the Salons
Fun indie rock with noise rock influence and also on the poppy side. Occasionally a song may bring in an electronic or some other interesting element which I absolutely love when this happens here giving songs more personality. However there are moments when songs sound rather average. But it all balances up in the end.

7+/11

>Loose Fur - Born Again in the USA
For some reason this didn't really grab me at all, there were some good ideas and execution but I felt nothing behind all of this. The songwriting does dip to sub-par, you've-heard-it-before rock at times too.

5+/11

>Naked City - Absinthe
It feels strange that this is a John Zorn project. It doesn't have the wild out-there-ness of his usual stuff.
And maybe that's coloring my opinion of this album, that it never does anything really crazy.
But I can't help myself from feeling that I've heard dark ambient stuff done better than this. I listened to Homotopy to Marie the other day, and the atmosphere of that album blows this one out of the water.
It's still good, but it's definitely not my favorite Zorn album.

>Oxbow - The Narcotic Story (Old Oxbow)
Yeah sweet. Prior to listening to them I thought they were just a noise rock band with an angry black vocalist that sometimes fought people at shows. I did not expect to be moved that much by songs in this record, like "She's a find". It's a beautiful record that also manages me to feel uneasy with the tension it builds. Probably a grower.

Also three spots left, one per person, don't meme me first come first served.

I felt about the same about Absinthe, especially after it has been posted millions of times as "scariest album" and stuff, and I'm a huge fan of Homotopy To Marie which to me is the "scariest" album, so I had hyped this up a lot.

It was just pretty ok but pretty boring dark ambient, kind of a let down especially for an album with that amazing album cover.

>Orange Caramel - Lipstick
This was a fun listen, but not a particularly interesting one.
There are a lot of interesting production moments, but just as many that were mired in k-pop tropes
But still, it was fun

>Nicholas Szczepanik - Dear Dad
Pretty noise gets progressively louder over time: the album
I just wish he put more variation into the drones
I ended up falling asleep during the last few minutes of the first track, but that is in large part due to the fact that I had to pull an all-nighter last night for my software engineering final project
My team just fuckin crushed our presentation though, so I can probably attribute that to Mr. Szczepanik.

That was actually pretty good. what the fuck. The one time I hear a japanese pop singer that doesn't use an entire backing symphonic orchestra to their disadvantage. Not to mention the singer herself having some real bars, like a non-irritating version of Yoko Ono-- even during the live performance-- this gets a very great out of 10

This one's going on the wishlist for later

>EthyBoy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=domF0p4t8GM

Can't deny them wails and post rock chords. And the dissonant backing vocal line at 3 minutes in is chilling in a good way.

________

Comet: https://youtube.com/watch?v=4K7-Cj6Be6c

That minute and a half long intro overstayed its welcome longer than it should have, and I have mixed feelings about the pitched up vocals. But by no means is this unenjoyable; the progression of the track follows the narration well, the buildup makes the last minute of the track extra sweet, and the sunniness of it all is very comfy. Did NOT lose by a huge margin.

>Oxbow - Thin Black Duke

New Oxbow.

New Oxbow’s album is produced by the same guy that did The Narcotic Story, so you can expect the same clean and crisp sound from Thin Black Duke. Once again, we get very fierce blues rock fused with orchestral and brass sections (no woodwinds this time). The dynamics of the song jump from silent and slow sections to fast and bombast.

Eugene is much more coherent on this, but just as gritty as he usually is. We get a story with this album, similarly to Mr. Johnson from The Narcotic Story. The Thin Black Duke goes through his own torments in the world of money and power. At least it seems so, cause Eugene’s vocal performance is not the most intelligible thing on Earth. I need some lyrics goddamn it!

Think I like the opener the most. Something about the whistles and the bluesy guitar does it for me. A Gentleman’s Gentleman is also striking a chord with me mostly because of the style and the fast-pace. Letter of Note has some great section switches in this classic Oxbow fashion, making it another highlight on this record.

Needs more listens. The Narcotic Story opened up to me upon numerous relistens. So far though, very good return imo. Maybe a bit too similar in style to the predecessor, but great regardless.

>Brotzmann/Leigh - Sex Tape

They totally fuck…around for almost an hour.

And then they fuck…off.

Basically Leigh switches from the sustained lap steel position to swelling thrusts, while Brotzmann uses his sloppy reed blowing skills to reach some climaxes and sometimes gently swirl around the main action.

Brotzmann is one horny dude though, so half way through he goes back into the hardcore mode and it seems like Leigh totally digs it, shredding her instrument as they go along. She is left playing all by herself 3/4 in before they both come into this phantasmagoric moment of ecstasy and end on a melodic note.

Hot.

Following Paid tha Cost, Snoop continues the whole smooth pimp thing, adding a bunch of soul/funk features (Bee Gees, Bootsy Collins, Charlie Wilson) and riding over that funky Neptunes production. Once again, it works shockingly well considering he was as hardcore and west coast as it got about 5 years before. I feel exactly the same way as I do about 80% of his albums honestly. Some awesome tracks (“Ups & Downs”, “Snoop DO Double G”, “Drop It Like It’s Hot”, “Signs”), some duds (“Can I Get A Flicc Witchu” and “Step Yo Game Up” are legitimately awful) and a bunch of alright tracks carried by Snoop’s smooth flow and persona. Aside from a few cuts, nothing stands out one way or the other but it’s pretty mellow and entertaining. If this were 10 tracks instead of this unfocused, bloated 20 track album it would be awesome. Instead, it’s just entertaining. Not bad for the 7th album in someone’s career, that’s for sure.

I used to think Snoop was wasted talent but the more I explore his music, the less I think that. Instead, I’m impressed with how he’s managed to stay relevant and crank out solid music for so long. If only his albums were more concise.

2.5/5

Miguel - Kaleidoscope Dream

Pretty consistent modern R&B release. Miguel kind of lacks a signature sound or style imo but it still works. Tracks like “Adorn”, the title track and “How Many Drinks?” are all pretty great and the rest is at least enjoyable. Not sure what else to say, this is solid though, even if I’m not too big on modern R&B as a whole.

Yeah that Ringo Song is aight. It's by FAR the best song on that album though. Like, nearly Ladies and Gentlemen We're Floating in Space top heavy. It's nuts.

Folk you say? Hm...

I'm going with Blue Crystal Fire by Basho:
https://youtu.be/YYaGChm8RWw

I was THIS close to going with "This Year" by the Mountain Goats. I might regret it, but since Ethy chose Thirteen I wanna go with something more traditional to contrast it. I like that song lots though.

Busdriver - Perfect Hair (2014)
>Abstract Hip-Hop

Man, Hellfyre Club and Mello Music have such a unique sound in modern hip-hop. Even if I don’t love everything they come out with, I appreciate what they’re going for.

So yeah, this is one of the more interesting abstract hip-hop albums I’ve heard in a long time. The production has a synthy, semi-glitch electronic twinge, in a very Milo/Aesop Rock style. The sound of the album is definitely experimental but it never feels too try hard or purposefully weird which is a vibe I usually get from the whole abstract hip-hop scene. Maybe it’s because the beats are more electronic than industrial, that certainly seems to play a big part.

Busdriver himself has a unique flow, that works incredibly well over these beats. He does a great job switching between sounding both burnt out/tired and anxious/off the wall, two sounds that fit over this production. In that way, he seems to be another in the line of experimental rappers that draw influence from ODB’s scattered, wacked out style. Or maybe Kool Keith idk… you get the point. Anyway, he’s kind of all over the place but I actually like that he mixes it up. The fact that he isn’t stuck in one sound helps the variety of this album.

This isn’t without its flaws though. Busdriver and a few features (Aesop in particular) are a bit over the top at moments. A few of the songs verge too much on that robotic, sci-fi sound on the Ziggurat that I absolutely cannot stand. The hooks on “Upsweep” and “Eat Rich” are particularly heinous, shit makes me want to claw my eyes out, oh my loooord. What’s the point of rapping like that? Might as well plug the “Fitter, Happier” voice in on the hooks if you want to sound like an awkward cyborg. Ugh.

I could see this growing on me though, it was pretty enjoyable.

Day 1: Algeria
Khaled - Khaled (1992)

So starting off my journey through African popular music is Khaled's self-titled from Algeria in 1992 (or 1991? seems like different sources say different things).

This album is apparently in a genre called Pop Raï: Raï is a genre from the the 1930s that originated as a type of Bedouin folk music, "The rhythms of Arabic Music were combined with styles such as Gnawa, Flamenco and French Cabaret.". Raï means "opinion" and apparently it was very political too.

Well the genre was apparently suppressed during the 60s/70s because of that but then got popular again. This time it also got influenced by western pop music, and that's where we are now.

Musically, it sounds kind of like the Arabic and middle-eastern pop I've heard before (he sings in Arabic and French too), though with some really strong funk influences. Many songs are pretty forgettable though relaxing and nice, and his vocals (the classic wailing-type vocals often used in eastern music which I don't know the name of, can anyone enlighten me?) are really nice too.
There are some real bangers here though, like the song "Mauvais Sang" which is so incredibly groovy that it's hard to sit still. The drums are incredibly hard-hitting and the bass sounds like Seinfeld. This song is definitely a recommended listen, the album is maybe recommended if you are interested in the genre description I gave.
The songs are very catchy though and I would sing them alot, IF I spoke French and Arabic and could sing the beforementioned vocal technique.
