ITT: Albums that began your music journey
First two CDs I ever bought for myself:
>System of a Down - Toxicity
>Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory
CUT MY LIFE INTO PIECES
I AM IN MIDDLE SCHOOL
Prog will pound it into your head to listen to albums the entire way through
>>72519075
This album was one of the first non hip-hop albums I listened to. Helped me branch out
Styx - Paradise Theater.
Laugh, but Dennis DeYoung is a genius, and James Young is an excellent guitarist. I wish the concept was stronger, but Shaw resisted at every creative turn. Truthfully Shaw's my least favorite member of Styx.
You already posted it, it was the album that made me listen to more full albums. This album is an honorary mention though.
>>72519174
Yes! After I first discovered prog, I would ONLY listen to albums from start to finish -- no single songs. I've since grown out of that habit but nothing beats sitting down and listening to a solid prog album every once in a while. Especially after smoking a bowl or two.
Anyone my age would agree
>Mellow Gold
Billy Joel - The Stranger
I still think it's a solid album.
Mine was ITAOTS I'm a fag
Got me into Drone
when I was 13
>>72519214
agreed, still holds a special place in my heart today.
pls don't make fun... I was 14

>inb4 i'm normie
my bro showed me smells like teen spirit when it got mainstream and i was like shit this is good
and so started my music journey
>mfw hearing close to the edge for the first time rite now
Was like 14 or 15 when my dad showed me. I loved to get drunk and listen to it, even if it did make me want to hang myself
I know this might sound corny, but thank you guys for replying; I've been feeling pretty bad in the recent days and having a somewhat decent conversation help me a lot. Thank you
>>72519474
why anon tell us your problems :^) we may help
>>72519474
Sure man. 4chan isn't the best place for that, but I personally will try to make just about anyone feel a bit better. Hope things start looking up for you soon. Have a meme that made me laugh
>>72519135
The first album I bought was Jay-Z's Black Album
i don't really give a shit about punk music anymore but pic related and funeral by arcade fire started it for me way back when i was in high school. i was on the general discussion board of shoryuken reading some thread about music. i didn't know fuck all about what was going on but downloaded pretty much everything listed because i was an impressionable 14 year old at the time.
pic related is legit the only punk music i can listen, the rest is total trash.
>>72519214
DEARLY BELOVED ARE YOU LISTENING?
Agreed.

What's wrong with that? It's a good album
>>72519729
Just saying
My mind exploded when I heard Black Star for the first time
Still pretty good.
>>72519174
This too. I'll always be a proghead at heart.
My older sister introduced this album to me back in early 2013. Pretty much changed my view on music. I remember being devastated when Lou Reed died later that year.
>>72519449
This
The moment when I decided that this would be my favorite album was when I started my pilgrimage to patricianhood.
Now all I listen to is prog
>>72519075
I'm still very new to music. I've literally only listened to radiohead and elliott smith. Not sure where to go from there. Recommendations?
>>72519924
My Bloody Valentine and Autechre.
>>72519924
Just stick with ES and hopefully you'll kill yourself soon
>>72519075
This was some life altering shit when I was 15. I still think the album holds up well, despite being loved by a lot of plebs.
>>72519995
I know that feel, although mine was the wall
>>72519547
>the rest is total trash
Fuck you m8, most 80s-90s post-hardcore is pretty good too

Great album man. Some of the only actually good ska.
I still think it's great
>>72519075
This was unironically the first album that I got obsessed with and the one that paved my way for my love for music.
>>72520180
yeah man, time to move on.
i did not really have much of a taste in music at the time. when i was younger, i had listened to buttpunk i heard in runescape music videos, but hadn't been listening to that for several years by this point. i was a freshman in high school when this came out, and all my friends were talking about it, so i decided to listen to it, and i enjoyed it.
i had already been using 4chan for several years by then, so i clicked on /mu/ to see if there were any threads about chance or the album, and needless to say, it was awful. this was right around when yeezus came out, so to the surprise of no one, the board was shitty and unusable. and to this day, it still hasn't changed!
deleted and reposted so i could actually post the right album

Man Eminem in his hey-day was culturally omnipresent. I think he got a LOT of people into music. Especially considering the pop landscape when he came out, which was mostly very sugary pop. Eminem sounded like nothing else. I feel bad for the high-schoolers here who weren't there. By far the weirdest shit to ever get played on pop radio in my lifetime.
Always had my parents play it in the car when I was like 7
>>72520475
This is when they really started to come into their own, commercially and artistically.
From someone who always listened to death metal, death core, all the loud and noisy stuff, I always liked that massive attack Teardrop song. I listened to the album its from for the first time and that's where it all started.
>>72520366
>>72520366
Ya dude honestly, remember the first time I came on here and i was a shitty teenager I had no knowledge of music. I came and posted on here in like 2012? I was like 17, I got a friend to buy booze for that night for some reason and I wanted music suggestions andi got NMH. Good memories. I'm 21 now and I still look fondly back on me and my friends being obsessed. 4chan's kinda shit now that I'm 21, maybe i'm just an asshole now or it's gotten worse, or maybe it's always been this way and I didn't realise till now. Sorry for the blog
Back in 2001 or so. Got into metal and then branched out into other genres from there.
>>72520572
No it's definitely gotten worse. I've been here for 10 years. Not to say it was a LOT better before but it really was, for a variety of reasons.
>>72520572
I've been here for a little bit longer than you have.
It's always been shit.
>>72520597
>>72520597
damn, you think? /pol/ posting wasn't always a thing. I miss people just getting pissed at music not fucking nu-males or politics or whatever. I don't know, don't they have a board for that?

>>72519550
You taught me how to live.
>>72520621
jesus.
>>72520623
/pol/ is certainly the main reason why this place is worse, but to be honest there was always a cancerous undercurrent here. The thing was it was previously restricted to /b/. How 4chan worked for most people, and for me, was you started out on /b/ because it's what 4chan was famous for, and you usually started very young (13-16). And then when you got older and the charm of that place wore off you branched out and developed interests like video games or sports or what have you.
NOW what happens is these people do not grow out of the entry-level cancer humor and even worse they bring it to other boards. You think I care about the stuff that happens on /pol/? Of course not. But I care deeply when it starts infecting my two main boards (/sp/ and /mu/). I would love to be a janitor (go ahead and laugh) because I've been here for so long and care about it so much that I want to be part of the solution since obviously our current jannies and mods just don't care about the website. Ok that's my rant.
>>72520649
it wouldn't have happened if you weren't a massive faggot
>>72520626
Looking back I realize most of the content is cheese but by learning about power metal I started listening to bands like Blind Guardian and Helloween. Things went on from there.
>>72520621
It is something I need to quit. Most people here make me angry. Not for musical opinions but for polluting the board with shit that does not need to be on here.
>>72520678
reddit is only a click away
>>72520668
ya you right. but why cuck? how do you know I have a wife and I watch her fuck other dudes? Nu-male makes a bit more since, not much though.
>>72520671
I mean, nothing wrong with Manowar. But it's quite unusual you see a person start to listen metal with such band. It's pretty underground for people outside of metal. Most common is starting with Iron Maiden, Metallica, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, etc.
well this thread is ruined
>>72520697
damn, i don't even take this as an insult anymore, when I was an angry /v/tard i got pissed about reddit. There's no point anymore man, why not just get along?
>>72520621
I still find it worthwhile for getting recommendations for music, movies, and vidya. it's like panhandling for gold in a river of piss but it's still worth it sometimes.
that's what I tell myself at least. been here ten years, jesus.
>>72520718
Congratulations you are now an adult dealing with children. I'm sure they'll all come around eventually but it's just part of being young I suppose. You know what my main thing is? People will go into a thread and say "your taste is shit" or "that album is shit". I'm always wondered, why not just browse the catalog and its hundreds of threads, and find one you like? And then talk about things you like? Why is everyone on this website on a crusade to get upset about something or argue? I appreciate this place attracts depressed people and degenerates, and I'm one of them, but shouldn't this be our escape? I'll never understand the mentality of these types of posters. I just feel bad for them honestly and hope they change when they get older because it's no way to live.
>>72520718
why not just go to the other website and not come to this one?
>>72520747
why doesn't everyone? including yourself? this is not an insult but an actual question. If it's shit why stay? What is the ultimate point?
>>72520426
Embarrassing
>>72520771
because i don't think it's shit. if you do then fucking leave and quit complaining.
>>72520380
Same! thought I find myself questioning why this album made me branch out so much. Honestly, the thing I still find inspiring about this album that I think makes it transcend is the song structure. These songs just have a life to them and they just play out. Plus, I never really listenned to albums all the way through before.
>>72520795
well shit. why do you like it anon? I don't hate this place I think quality has gone down slightly, but I like finding new music. hearing other people's opinions.
>>72520498
underrated
Either King Crimson's debut or Electric Wizard's Dopethrone
I've been listening to Slipknot before
Laugh all you want, but this album was my gateway into punk, which led me into all the other shit I listen to now.
>>72519214
it's so bad though
I know that everyone hates the Foo's, but after listening to this album I started to listen to some "better" music.
I regret nothing.

>>72520931

>>72519214
Yep. Hell, I still listen to it every now and then. I don't like it as much as when I was young but its still a decent album with some great tracks and I appreciate its sound.

Used to watch RCT3 videos that played of Montreal tracks in the background (mostly troll videos) eventually they grew on me so I listened to a few of their singles and then eventually tried Hissing Fauna and it blew my mind. A few months later I went on /mu/ for the first time and listened to Arcade Fire - Funeral and later Radiohead which is where I started.
>>72522194

Not an album but i got this for xmas 2002 and the soundtrack blew my mind
First album proper was Highway to Hell
>>72523679
holy shit same here. This was the first album I actively went out and bought, and was when I stopped listening to whatever my older brother listened to.

When I was 12. Thanks, Dad.
Abbey Road was the first time i ever really got the idea of an album as anything other than a collection of songs. Everything just felt so perfect together and it all felt like it belonged and not a second was wasted. I wish i could still listen to it with the same wonder and awe that i did then.
THIS

To this day it's still my favourite album. I don't know how I came across it, but before it all I knew was normie music, and this changed that.
>>72526359
Czech or Slovak
I know it's a memey album ( as well as the entire genre) but it led me to explore more experimental and underground music.
Shame they would only get worse from here
I'd say The Wall ended up having a bigger impact on me, but this was my very first concept album, so I'd have to say it started my journey.

Don't care what anyone says, Decemberists are great
ICE AGE HEAT WAVE CAN'T COMPLAIN
Got me into indie when I was 16, and looking back it's the perfect entry level album.
I had three moments that got me interested in music.
First time was Hybrid Theory. Then my interest went away for awhile. Room on Fire brought it back for a couple of months but it went away again eventually. Then I came here for the first time probably the same week The Money Store released. I mainly browsed /o/ before then. The first three albums you guys convinced me to download were TMS, Trout Mask Replica, and ITAOTS. I've had nothing but good times here since then.
Also, is it just me or is the archive fucked? Tried looking for shit I know was there months ago and now they're gone. The website is different too.
>>72523750

>>72520456

>>72519075
Before I had listened to Is This It, I would drone my dad. Listening to it made me go my own way.
But my dad listens to a wide variety of things so I would have been better droning him a little longer because I did not move out of my indie garage rock-britpop comfort zone for 3 years after I discovered the Strokes. And I was probably as obnoxious as a metal head or a hip hop head about it.
I feel no shame.
>>72519135

When I was a senior in High School we got the option to pay to go on a trip to Italy over spring break with other classmates who were willing to pay for it. I went and because I was a total loner with no one to talk to, I downloaded the first five albums that weren't just Led Zeppelin which got me into increasingly underground, high quality, and experimental music.
Lonerism
Chutes Too Narrow
Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
Funeral
Endrtoducing...
>>72529769
I also went on the class trip to Italy in high school, and listened to nothing but this. So now whenever I hear reggae I think of Italy, which is kinda funny to me. Favorite city? Mine was Florence

>>72522194
This was the first CD i ever owned, it was a gift from my uncle.

This was the first album I owned, got it as a gift for my 10th or 11th birthday, I only listened to the singles from it though
>>72520040
This was the first album I listened all the way through and enjoyed. Unfortunately though for almost 2 years I only exclusively listened to The Beatles and was one of those wrong generation faggots.
>>72520218
This was the first album I brought with my own money. It was on sale and I listened to it on repeat for a whole summer. Shortly after started listening to other music, so I'd probably call this the album that gave me "taste"
i just browsed youtube and got really into this album, and continued browsing got me into ITAOTS

Swans are fucking garbage. Essential hipster shit. You'll fit right in. May as well get into Death Grips while you're at it.
>>72519075
It's funny, I've always thought of the Strokes as being incredibly bland and uninspiring, pretty much soulless dad rock of the early 00s.
It's weird to see that other people found it to be something amazing, but I can understand it
>>72538997
show me on the doll where Mr. Gira touched you, babe
>>72520253
this pushed me more towards rap around 16

>>72520532

>>72520665
/Pol/ posting actually gets deleted from /sp/, far fewer people tend to take bait aswell
it did make r9k insufferable and made the boards constant personality crisis worse
>>72519995
>This
I finally stopped listening to generic popular music. It's been quite a rabbit hole since.
>>72539643
Agree it doesn't work as well on /sp/, and I'm sure the reason why is that the average age of /sp/ posters feels much older than here, so they're mature enough to ignore it.
>>72522661
personally i liked in/casino/out but this shit was dope. can't believe they are coming back lul
>>72520839
honey is cool is better.
>>72519214
Yep yep.
I used to only listen to video game music because I found most rock and hiphop songs to be too basic and dull.
This was the first "real" album I ever listened to that was able to hold my interest. I heard Lady Fantasy and I was instantly hooked on prog

>>72526414
These are the same for me, i started with just fancy clown playing on repeat and thought i should get into more music, a year and a half later im maining Les Rallizes, Godspeed you! and cLOUDDEAD

Wow. What a rare find anon. Remember listening to this back in 2010 during high school. The music confused me so much I couldn't stop listening back then.
Unironically this
It was the first album I listened to front to back
>>72519075
yung boi here
>>72520718
fuck off fag
This was the first album I ever downloaded. This and random Boards of Canada tracks on YouTube completely changed how I thought about music and set me on a very different track than I was initially headed. Before I was listening to Nickelback pretty much exclusively and Eminem tracks my dad would play. There were a couple of years where I'd only listen to IDM, but eventually I'd discover stuff like post-punk that gave me similar vibes

My father and uncle were both stoner hippies back in the day who then turned into metalheads once metal became a thing. So my childhood was filled with everything from Jefferson Airplane to Vanilla Fudge to Sabbath, and that formed the basis of my musical taste. Can't really remember which individual albums I heard first, but it was guaranteed to have been something from the sixties.
>>72519075
if THIS album legit started your interest in music then there is nothing more to say than that you're on giant fucking massive FAGGOT. Even though this album is great the mere fact that it started your music '''''''''''''''''''journey''''''''''''''' makes it about 10x worse fuck you faggot
