Does /mu/ actually like U2 or is it some ironic contrarian meme thing?

Both. It's a huge meme, but it's agreed that War, Joshua Tree, Zootopia, Boy and Acthung Baby are good to great albums

Unforgettable Fire too. And outside those, they've had some other good songs as well.

Oh yeah, I forgot that one
You see, some of us actually listen to music, and when it sounds good in our ears, we like it and listen to it more. I know this sounds crazy to a high-schooler who tailors their taste in music to carry around as an accessory, but this is how grown-ups treat music.
So yes, a lot of people on /mu/ like U2. If you'd like you can actually listen to their albums yourself and then you'll have an informed opinion. Wouldn't that be something?

Thank you for such a wonderful post. It's so wonderful in fact that I don't even need to argue, you've done it for me.

This is actually true.
I don't like Bono but it's good music.
