This again?
The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

While I'm also going through Woolite's sweet albums, I also wanted to steal Mark And's idea because I liked it a lot. As in, a mini song tourney.
Recommend songs of 4 minutes at most this round.
Three entrants will get eliminated the first round, two the second, and then 1 each subsequent round.
submit a meme if you think you can get away with it
10 entrants needed.
It's with a heavy heart that I must say that the overwhelming consensus was that The Ziggurat and You Are My Everlovin' need to be replaced. I love 'em a lot but that's what you guys want.
Also, 8+9, Machine Gun, and Uneven Compromise scored comparatively high, and I'd like to see if most people think those should be removed or not.
I've labeled the chat as so:
X = Will be removed
? = Could be removed
No mark = Probably safe/counter-pick
! = Remains in /daily/core
Vote in these polls real quick to decide if these albums should stay or be removed:
>khana rung thawi - แห่สดดนตรีพื้นบ้านหนองโก ชุดที่ 8 + 9
http://www.strawpoll.me/12834740
>Peter Brötzmann - Machine Gun
http://www.strawpoll.me/12835345
>Lil Ugly Mane
http://www.strawpoll.me/12835346
Keep in mind, the point of replacing stuff is so that we can have albums that better represent the current """taste""" of /daily/. I love a lot of these, but not all of them deserve to be on there.
Also, you should reply to this post with ideas for what to replace them with. Forca Bruta will most likely be one, but what else deserves to be on there? Strawpoll coming once there's a good amount of ideas.
yeah

Actually, I have a better idea:
I'm gonna put the could-be-removed albums in a poll with a bunch of others. The top five scoring will be in the new top /daily/core.
Here's what I've got so far. If you have any better ideas let me know before I make the strawpoll.

Dude why would anyone not want to hear an avant noise cover of The Duke of Prunes
>Torts vs Eric
>Toshi Ichiyanagi - Opera "From the Works of Tadanori Yokoo"
Very all over the place, and most of it is boring. There's boring tape music, a fairly run-of-the-mill, 28-minute long psychedelic "jam", a boring song that sounds like a guy practicing a song on piano for like 10 minutes, etc. The second track was a somewhat decent drone track, "Kayo Musicale" had a nice ominous vibe, but those tracks can't save the save the album from being mediocre overall. 1.5
>Lars Horntveth - Kaleidoscopic
Starts off with 10 minutes of pleasant, if unremarkable neo-romanticism, then for no apparent reason dives into electronica. It's a bit of a compositional mess overall, Horntveth's attempts to integrate electronica and jazz instrumentation into classical music don't really work very well, and many of the segments of the piece just don't really fit well. It's ok I guess but yeah uh whatever. 2.0+

results
trip up: Women - Can't You See
The whole melodic meme meets noisy drone thing was p neato at first. Unfortunately, it kinda wore off towards the end. Interesting tho.
yamir: Little Kid - Logic Song/We Waited
Ok, I know /daily/ loves this but it has taken me quite some time to finally listen to anything off it. Thanks for this yams cause this was some good stuff. Really brings out feelings of comfy melancholy that I like in music.
jimmy jazz: You'll Never Get to Heaven - Drowning Out
Pretty comfy. Cool vibes. A tad bit repetitive but it's not a big problem. Neato.
Kanzler: Now, Now - The Pull
Eh, not really my thing. Stuff like this falls under just average for me. Mildly interesting prod but I really am not a big fan of this kinda stuff. I don't dislike it either tho.
¿: Majical Cloudz - Downtown
This is a song that lies in between ok and good for me desu. It's got a sorta comfy vibe but at the same time feels sorta bland. It's ayt tho. Neato.
Trans God: Cold Body Radiation - Radiance
KVLT. Ye, this was fine. Cold.
ricebeansandegg: Taishou Kyuunen - 小池の幽霊さん
Nice synth meme. Has a classic Japanese flavor. P ok.
To Torts:

when the two memes have new recs, rankings will be posted
>>72442611
Ok I'm back from my walk and thanks for the rec, it was a good album, but really the wrong atmosphere for a walk in the woods a spring day. This was more "walk in old town during the night"-vibe.
But still thanks for something to listen to again some time 2.5/5
Sam Rivers - Streams
I am not one to enjoy free jazz, I find it unlistenable at worst and masturbatory at best. This isn't really any different, it was tolerable, but not something I would listen to again
Jangle stop liking things I don't like
They Might Be Giants - Lincoln
Gamble payed off fishe, it's a ton of fun
Black Pus - All My Relations
The more of Brian Chippendale's music I listen to the more I get the feeling that he's phoning it in a lot of the time, for example, this is virtually indistinguishable from his Mindflayer material on Take Your Skin Off
still, I enjoyed it
Stabscotch - Uncanny Valley
I'm a little confused, it's kinda skronky and annoying but also strangely listenable, it didn't really impress me that much though
Keith Fullerton Whitman - Occlusions
I don't think there is anything particularly interesting about this particular set of blank tones arranged in a sequence that often reverberates off itself, might be something really special, might be a dog behind a mirrored glass pane hitting buttons with it's paws.
Eureka Brass Band - New Orleans Funeral Original 1956
Great, really dirgy and olde-tymey, lot of fun purely as a kitsch nostalgia piece.
John Coltrane - Live at the Village Vanguard
This is great, although the piano gets really lost in the mix sometimes, will revisit this again and again

kezia i listened to because i read somewhere that pth started out as a skate punk band, and you can tell the influence from that is all over this album if you're aware of the fact. not a far cry from a wilhelm scream except they've got gay falsetto so that's cool. didnt completely sink into it yet obviously but it's really good stuff, lots more fun than most alt-prog and prog metal

>>72445755
For 2010 Shit Computer definitely wasn't that boundary-pushing or modern for what it was. In fact, I would argue it's pretty dated. I would scarcely even really define that as bleeps.
Melon basically just says "Narkopop is BORING" and "Seventy FRICKIN' minutes???The HECK???" which basically leads me to believe he just doesn't know much about or really care for the genre really. Idc about the score I just think the review is bad.
>>72445899
>For 2010 Shit Computer definitely wasn't that boundary-pushing or modern for what it was.
That's true, I never thought it was. I just think it snapshots the time it came from pretty well, knowingly cutting songs into recognizable pop song structures.

>Converge - Jane Live
I actually really love Jane, though I'm not huge on this band in general. It's chaotic, unforgiving, and jarring as all hell.
And oh boy how this album was worse! The recording is shottier, the vocalist is laughably off (not terrible, but it's an obvious display of what decades of mathcore does to the vocal chords), and in general everything is worse. The vocalist being so off is probably the most disappointing part, as they were the reason Jane was originally so appealing to me. One of the examples of how an album can really stand out with the help of a unique vocalist. There is occasionally a track which extends on some idea, but none I really found worthwhile of it's existence in the first place.
A frustrating and pointless release. Just go listen to the original.

ROUND 1
_____________
> SURVIVORS|
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
>IM FISH: https://youtu.be/5w9fOAG5Xz8
I'm not too huge on video games as I used to be, but this was pleasing to listen to. Has a good balance of weird/comfy, just like Katamari. Slapping the soundtrack on my wishlist, because I also listened to "Wanda Wanda" aftr and knew I had to hear the rest of this.
>Kanzler: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsCVeYD2lI0
Minimal Synth punk singe by No More. The quiet percussion is tight, and gives the vocals the freedom to be loose and nonchalant. Catchy, too. Pretty good.
>transgod: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAVne8dOzEA
Dated, unfortunately. I like the chorus, but the bleeps just dont work here. Not enough to make me hate it, at least.
>jimmy jazz: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tntvl5XtXhw
Tasty bit of "Ghettotech", if you could even call it that. EP has been added to wishlist.
>EthyBoy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgqWylGeCiY
Jazzy folk/songwriter tune here. Something you'd hear in a lounge, but still enjoyable.
>Comet: https://youtube.com/watch?v=8reHAU9YF_U
Actually had the album this was from in my library for the longest time, but deleted it out of disinterest with the tracks I sampled.
>Letov: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBKNMs5kdKo
Combines the grandeur of a theater orchestra with Belgian singing. Brel's voice grew on me quickly, quite passionate.

>>72451063
god I love these memes
I get your point, but I don't fully agree. Although what I hate is when people talk about vocalists who sing "bad" etc., because all of my favorite vocalists are people who sing really "bad" lol.
Honestly I can't really hear if a vocalist is "objectively good" or like has good technique, but I think that's a positive trait when being an eccentric music listener t b h
>>72450532
Yknow I thought you were meme-ing me with this but it's actually pretty good

>>72451222
I want to believe
I guess I'm just naive
>>72451145
Yeah, I phrased my point poorly. I mean that someone's voice (the character of it, not quality) may as well be like personality in that it's just something you first notice, acknowledge, but then you just have to move on and take it at face value. Chances are, it's not some artistic decision anyway.
>>72447876
shidd which one? I just got Différance on vinyl last month and it sounds great.

Ah yeah I understand. But don't you think certain voices may be a bit jarring for certain genres? For example Paul Robeson singing cute indie pop or whatever?
>>72451403
Yeah, it's a perfect nod. Love the full band sound, it just jives so well together.
>>72451448
Yeah, I agree with you there. But I do think it takes an extreme example like that to be an actual criticism rather than just a "hm, that's an interesting decision" thing

Then I think we're on the same page!
hey guys I just found this cool band I thought you might like
>Björk - Homogenic
Consistently decent. Rarely great, never bad.
3/5
>Björk - Vespertine
I imagine this is her best album. This is her at her most mature and beautiful. It's a lot more concise, and seems to follow a consistent sound, instead of switching from annoying immature tracks to random grand-er ones. It feels very wintery and mysterious, but also very warming at the same time. It's not as maximalist (which from her is a good thing) too. Good shit.
Highlight tracks: Cocoon, It's Not Up To You, Undo, Sun in my Mouth, Unison

the whole things a single but i'm singling out "Billiard Player Song" if you're just looking for a single song.
Jeff Mangum - Live at Jittery Joe's (2001)
>singer/songwriter, lo-fi indie
Songs I loved performed well, what else can I say? Maybe a bit pointless in the long run, because something is a bit lost when you strip away the full arrangements from these songs, but Mangum is a fucking incredibly passionate singer and guitarists, he injects these tracks with an energy and urgency that isn't there on the studio renditions, and he throws in a lovely "I Love How You Love Me" cover to boot. The recording quality isn't that good though (that fucking baby), and the "Oh Comely" rendition is pretty lousy, but any NMH fan should eat this up. The stage banter is great as well.
3.0
Al Di Meola - Elegant Gypsy (1977)
>jazz fusion
Competent jazz fusion with some decently tasteful latin elements thrown in for good measure. Way too damn smooth, and when you boil everything down it's basically just wankery, but it's enjoyable wankery that doesn't pretend it's anything but. The flamenco does suck, though.

>Fish vs WeeWee
Minor Threat rocked as much as I thought it would rock, and that's a lot. Wonderful screaming, killer guitars, everything punk punk PUNK. Wee's rec was a bit weak, though. Memes aside, it reminded me of Musical Abortions. It was cool, but yeah, it couldn't top Minor Threat unfortunately.
>Nat vs Ethy
This was a tough matchup, I liked both EP's about the same. Iron & Wine was a very pleasant listen, another solid Subpop folk release that I enjoyed. I liked how lush and cozy it was. Rema Rema was super cool, but I felt like it didn't do as much for me as I thought it would. I still enjoyed it, but not as much as I thought I would.
As for the songs, both packed a good amount of emotion, but I'm going with Nat's pick because I love how much more raw and noisier it is than the Ween track.
So Nat and Fish move on! Sorry WeeWee and Ethy, but thanks for the recs and thanks for playing!
also gonna start a freeform chart on the side
>Katamari Damacy
Decided to check this out since it popped out at me the most amongst the other albums that Fish was considering for /daily/core, and what can I say? There's not much there isn't to enjoy about this album. It's just so fun and lush and dense and happy, I think it's impossible to be sad while listening to this.

Colin Stetson - All This I Do For Glory (2017)
>Minimalism, Avantgarde Jazz
Basically Vol 2 with a more direct approach and less epic moments. On it's own, it's quite nice but it almost feels redundant in the scope of his discography; if you told me these were all outtakes from the New History Warfare series I would probably believe you. Good stuff, but nothing revolutionary.

Sun Ra - Black Myth / Out in Space
Fenton Robinson - Somebody Loan Me a Dime
>Chicago Blues, Electric Blues
I thought triangle hated electric blues? Anyway, this was good, if a bit generic. Robinson sounds like what most people imagine a generic soul singer sounds like. Not as much variety as I'd like, but the songs are all pretty short so it never gets annoying. The guitar playing is definitely the highlight.
3/5
Barry Adamson - Moss Side Story
>Dark Jazz, Dark Ambient
I was expecting something more along the lines of Ascenseur pour l'échafaud but weirder; what I got was a lot of ao,;sess skronking over city noises, tame industrial and one key on a synth being held down. The "narrative" it follows is pretty cheesy as well; I think the bonus tracks end up being the best because they aren't stuck to it.
The non-existent film that this would theoretically score would be pretty cool I bet, though. It does do a great job at painting a bleak industrial cityscape in your head.
2.5/5
Charanjit Singh - Synthesizing: Ten Ragas to a Disco Beat
>Electro-Disco, Acid House (!)
You have to appreciate the humor in a middle aged Indian guy accidentally inventing something close to acid house, but this all this is unfortunately: a novelty. It's harmless innocent music, but it's just one gimmick spread across ten tracks - and by "a disco beat", it means ONE disco beat for the whole thing. I honestly wanted it to be over after the first side.
2/5
Šiaurės Kryptis - Netiekto
>Post-Punk, Folk Punk
Sounds like a band of Lithuanian Kino lovers decided to throw some traditional instruments into their Tsoi worship. This is very heavy on the more New Wave-y and Jangle-y side of post-punk, but with folk instruments tossed in.
I'm not really huge on how vocal heavy this album is, since the weirder instrument choices are what gives this most of its identity. The vocals aren't really interesting until the last few tracks.
Also, shoutout to Lithuania and Lativa for giving linguistic students nightmares.

Though, I should point out that the ending of the Kryptis album is really fantastic.
