Serious question jazz fans of /mu/, is Buddy Rich actually that well respected within jazz circles, or is he just seen as kind of a show-off douche that rock fans salivate over?

Mostly this. He was a good drummer and some of his big band recordings are good but that has as much to do with the good arrangements as it does with his drumming.
The most respected jazz drummers are Max Roach, Philly Joe Jones, and Art Blakey. Buddy Rich was important for rock and roll drummers, especially during the British Invasion.

He's cool to dislike because he's well known like Jimi Hendrix or Jimi Page for guitarists., but the man played with Charlie Parker, Count Basie. Lester Young etc.. He's objectively a legend of drumming.

uh? not really, you should probably actually talk to jazz musicians
Max Roach was better.

He was a monster player. He had incredible technique - SERIOUS chops. Yes, absolutely respected as on of the best ever. As a band leader, he was a legendary hard-ass and would scream at the band in the bus after a show, or fire people on the spot for fucking up on stage. Turns out, he had a big ol' brain tumor which may have contributed to his... personality.
