My stuff. I just bought the Jazz last weekend. Its my bassuwaifu. The Ibanez 5 string is my gig workhorse. The action and play-ability on it is sex.
The black PJ is a chino-frankenbass that i put together for the funs,
I'm admittedly pretty meh at guitar. I use the 7 string Ibby and the agile for roughing out song ideas really.

Yeah, its an SX PBass with one of the SX Jazz necks that they sell on the parts page. The neck is actually pretty damn good. I put the bass together to learn advanced setups and some guitar-smithing stuff without screwing up a good instrument, and it ended up decent. I'm going to toss a set of flat wounds on it and use it for old rock and blues.

Picking my way though book 2 of this Hawaiian guitar method set from the '30s. Lots of marches and waltzes. It's clear from the difficulty in tuning these slant chords that i'm going to have to change to a heavier gauge in order to keep playing in Open A. It's just too slack to really dig in with the bar.

I've been looking into strings for one of my basses for a brighter sound. I've got a Dimarzio Model P ceramic split P pickup in there. Scale length is 32".

I like the sound of fresh roto swing, but I don't want to change my strings every 2 weeks. I would rather aim for a string that sounds better broken in. I'm planning on using regular light strings for the sake of brightness.

Anyone know some good strings that sound bright broken in? I like strong mids. I've been considering DR hi-beams for that reason, but I have no idea what they sound like broken in. D'addario flex steels hopefully will mellow out to sound a bit like a nickel.

Like the other guy said, you can make up the difference a bit with EQ. But nothing's going to sound the same as brand new strings, they all wear down pretty much the same way. At least you can tell new strings sound better, that's better than most bass players

>>72436972
Well, I use ""conditioned"" flats right now, but I do think some fresh strings sound better, particularly roto swings. I'm kinda wondering if with certain steel strings I can get away with something akin to nickel after a break-in period. Obviously EQ is a part of any good bass tone, but I think it would be harder to get old rotos to sound like new rotos, than a string that stays alive better.
>>
>>72436925
I think they recommend 8s for the high g. It's a stupid tuning, pretty much a meme that's fun to experiment with.

So what are you gents working on at the moment?
I'm finally getting around to working on Rossiniana No 2.
I was supposed to have that learned in a two month period while finishing up by the end of this month, but I was in the middle of moving and severely lacked motivation after finishing the Rossiniana No 1 in a similar time frame.
Little history on these 15 minute long pieces, Giuliani was hurting for money and decided the best way to make some was to turn some of Rossini's opera arias into a theme in variations, since opera composers were the rock stars of their time. It would be no different than me making an arrangement of a pop song for solo guitar, except this involved virtuosos and much more complicated source music.

Some may know this tune from Counter Strike, apparently it was in one of the games.

Lots of cool techniques utilized to make this sound good and sometimes even make it feasible.

IMO I had gr hi beams on a jazz bass with actives, they sounded amazing. For a week, then went dead. After break in the felt and sounded flat and lifeless.

Had a set of d'addario later and they sounded fresh for about a month then broke in and sounded ok.

Coated strings cost more but sound fresh for way longer.

Damn. You try the SS lo-riders? At this rate I might just put a light set of flats or half rounds on. I just hate the idea of picking up my bass only for it to sound dead and need new strings.

Anyone know any other pressure wound strings besides GHS? They seem to last a few months, BT they just seem to growl at the wrong place for me.

Why don't you go smell your own farts, faggot?
>>

The only instrument that is a very good indicator for being musically illiterate is electric """"guitar"""".

The theory(if they even bother) is not nearly as in depth or useful as just taking a course on theory in college. You definitely don't learn the same things looking at theory focused solely on electric guitar.

I'm thinking of going for a flex steel as a round wound to break in. They seems fairly neutral but hopefully will lose some zing with age. I'm also interested in Dunlop heavy cores but I haven't found many demos on them.

If that fails, I'll probably switch to coated steel. Dragon skins sound nice.

>When you play lap steel are you just at the mercy of whatever you can barre?

Pretty much, yeah. That's the reason there are so many different tunings out there for nonpedal steel.

Also why you see beasts like Quad Stringmaster on stage - for easy jumps between tunings.
>>
>>72439727
Fortunately I'm anonymous. I feel like the strings on the guitar are too tense, and I want to make them more bendable. I tried fiddling with the brigde I have, which is a tune-o-matic bridge, but failed miserably. I'm looking to get either a Bigsby, six-point locking tremolo or a locking tremolo. But maybe I could just change the settings on the brigde I have to get more bendability? It feels like either the strings are too tight or too spaghetti-like to the point that it's literally impossible to play.

>>
>>72439347

>>
>>72440818
deleted because of poor math. let me reformulate:

Say you want to build something like the jamstik but not midi. Say you decide on a scale length of 320mm, or about half of a normal scale. That would put the 12th fret at 160mm, normally. Now if you calculate fret distances, the 6th fret would end up at about 94mm, regardless if you're intending to install 6, 22, or 200 frets.

The physics of vibrating strings simply do now allow you to put normal sized frets on half a scale length neck and expect to vibrate at the same frequency.

>>72440895
?
>>
>>72440997
you shouldnt say normal sized frets, but normally spaced frets
cause you can still use the same fret size (extra jumbo etc
>>
>>72440997
Fret size doesn't affect pitch, but very tall frets make it easy to play a note sharp. Only tension and the length of the vibrating portion of the string affect pitch. String gauge agfects this indirectly, just because it changes the tension required to reach a certain pitch. So yes, a half scale guitar with equivalent string tension and gauge to a gibson scale will be a higher pitch because the length of the string has been halved.

Yeah, I don't know what any of that means.

People want to do things with their lives? Like what? Work a 60 hr. a week wageslave job to buy a house with a two car garage, a pool, and put two SUVs in it? Seen plenty of people fall into that trap and they're still miserable. Making money doesn't mean anything either, I've done that already. Experiences? Like what? Going to Hawaii for vacation? Been there, done that. See one pristine beach and you've seen 'em all. Oh look, dirt and rocks in Japan. Just like the dirt and rocks in America. Boring.

You'd think that but you'd be wrong. I wouldn't waste time going back to Hawaii ever again unless it was free or for work. It was just another lie, something they say you're "supposed" to enjoy and is supposed to be special. It turns out it's just some more bullshit you wished you hadn't bothered wasting your time and money on. Another normie swindle.

Shit like that is why "normal" peoples lives are unending nightmares, anybody who says any different is either lying or delusional. Here's a small musical journey.
If you look at measure 20.
We're in the key of e minor. In that measure we go from a i chord to a V chord, back to i and then to a V7(these chord changes are done on the beat). Measure 21 is just a i chord, measure 22 moves to a iv chord. Measure 23 is back to a i chord. Measure 24 has a secondary dominant, it's a V7/V which resolves back to a normal to a V7 in e minor. Measure 25 is a i chord again. Measure 26 has us playing a Neapolitan 6th chord(flat II, first inversion) which resolves to a i chord in the first half of measure 27 while the second half is a V chord. Then the modulate in measure 28 to the G major, our relative major to e minor. We do this using a V chord in G Major.

I would encourage electric guitarists to spend some time doing harmonic/macro analysis of music to get a better understanding of how it works.

Because of its relationship to the key signature.
You can analyze individual chords, by looking at a piece as a collective gives you insight as to how to use it anywhere.
For example, you can reverse engineer a major chord into its intervals(create a formula basically) and apply that anywhere and to any note. In harmonic/macro analysis we are breaking down chord progressions into a formula of sorts to better understand where the piece is going and how to use these ideas in our own music.

Neapolitan 6th chords make a big impact when used. Composers like Chopin used them a fair bit.
Try it yourself, use this progression i-V-N6-vii*7/V-V, resolve to i if you'd like.

(The secondary dominant is a seven-fully diminished seventh of five)

It's really beneficial to song writing because if there's a certain mood or idea you want to evoke at certain points, you have the tools to do so and the know how to arrive at a certain key signature through modulation.
>>

>>72444608
As an electric guitarist I agree completely. Most guitar players, specifically electric but also acoustic, don't know shit and don't consider the relationships between notes / chords

On that note, does anyone agree with them that guitar should be taught from the middle of the neck, at A probably. If you learn A major scale and all of the intervals you can translate that to any key easier.

Instead, I was taught from open position, making anything not using open strings confusing for years until I took it upon myself to expand out. I don't think my teacher was bad, he was a skilled musician and excellent pianist, but it feels that most guitar is taught from open.
>>
>>72441409
wow I like Kiss now.
>>
>>72444663
Yeah, open position stuff kinda tripped up my visualization of chords and scales for a while.

Pat Martino plays scales in open position fretting notes behind the nut where they would be if they were elsewhere on the neck to help keep his shapes and shit consistent, but this felt kinda awkward to me.
>>
>>72444663
That's an unusual idea, never heard of that even in any classical method book I've panned over, played, or used to teach out of.
I've always taught from open position and gradually worked my students up the neck. We occasionally go back and play old songs in a different position to familiarize them with it.
A lot of classical music utilizes at least two positions, but few of my students are actually interested in it, but I don't push them to do so either.

I'm pretty sure I don't want to use one of my students as a guinea pig to test the fifth position learning idea.

Been teaching professionally part time at a music store for about a year now, prior to that I had college tutoring experience.
To teach you just have to be good at explaining (possibly abstract if it's theory related) concepts in a way that students will understand. A lot of this knowledge will come from the way you were taught these ideas can be mixed with your experience.

Beyond that, trying to teach someone how to teach effectively is probably too meta for me to accomplish and all students you'll have are different. You can fit all students into a method of teaching, but you'll have to leave allowances for when student are ready for certain concepts.

My biggest problem sometimes is trying to know when the student is bored or ready for something that he will enjoy. Trying to make them engaging is tough because a teacher's positive demeanor can only go so far in making what is effectively a lot of busy work, enjoyable.

Another thing to remember is that it's good to be self-critical, but if a student is simply not practicing then that is not your fault entirely.

Basically.
Method books are great at giving structure to lessons and can be used as a measure of progress. Supplementary material can always be used as needed/desired. Your Anecdotes may be added to lessons provided they don't contradict musical fact.

If you're teaching children, try to get the parents involved to ensure the kids practice for about 15 minutes a day.
I've got a couple kids who have the same lesson every week, because they never practice. The parents don't seem to be all too concerned about pissing money way either.

Okay, I don't want to buy the 7 string meme bass anymore. However, I want to buy a 6 string bass instead and tune it EADGCF or E standard guitar tuning an octave down. Talk me out of it maybe/please, I don't need it but I'm really interested. I'd be buying the Harley Benton BZ-6000 bass, so the 6 string version of the 7 string meme bass.

Why the fuck wouldn't you want a low B string? Nobody wants to hear you wank up high in the mid guitar range. EADGCF is all fourths tuning, not standard. Standard would would be better for chording if you wanted to do that too.

>Why the fuck wouldn't you want a low B string?
I already own 3 5-string basses.
>Nobody wants to hear you wank up high in the mid guitar range.
Correct, this will be for wanking at home.
>EADGCF is all fourths tuning, not standard. Standard would would be better for chording if you wanted to do that too.
I literally said that. "EADGCF or E-standard guitar tuning just an octave down"
"OR"
Well, you can't play open chords anyway since it's tuned too low for that, I'm not sure.
>>
>>72448044
he didnt say EADGCF is standard tuning

he said EADGCF ">>OR<< E standard guitar tuning"

If that's the case then why ask /gg/? Buy whatever you want, tune it however you want.

Ah, when you said "or" I thought you were implying that it was the same as standard for some reason.
Standard tuning wouldn't be so much for open chords as it would for chords on the highest 3 strings, anywhere on the neck. It would make easier arpeggios up high and it would let you easily copy any guitar lines by sight. Besides, with all fourths you would only get an extra half step up higher. Not much to write home about.

>>72448176

Yeah he is and I never used to watch him because of it, but he really is an incredible player and always has amazing tone.

>>
>>72448222
I ask /gg/ because I'm an insecure little bitch even if it's just for wanking at home.
>easier arpeggios
I am a complete amateur on guitar and it still completely throws me off whenever I play, exactly because it isn't completely symmetrical across all strings. Since I won't be playing any open chords or barre chords I thought all fourths would just be easier for my bassist mind to get around.
Anyway, that's very simple to do so I'll just test that out if I get it.

What's the best way to "unsticky" a gloss neck with really sticky laquer on it? I have this old SE PRS and the neck is slow as molasses and my thumb gets caught 90% of the time I slide
>>
>>72448473
Easiest and safest way is to use scotch brite.
>>
>>72448301
You eventually get used to the third. It's only a half step off, after all, so all you do is shift one fret over. It would make triads even easier to finger on a bass, what with the further frets. It would probably take you longer to get used to than all fourths but I think once you get used to it you'll find it to be useful in its own way.
