Shoegaze is actually a misnomer. When the phrase was coined, they were actually saying "shoegraze", as in "the artist would just graze several pedals with their shoe while playing"

it's actually because when noisy, distortion heavy bands started appearing in the uk, uptight club owners would kick them out during the first song saying "shoo, gays!"
